Did You Know? (Coveted Yarn)

That there are 30,000 balls of yarn at Coveted Yarn?  If you knit or know anyone who knits, you have to check out Coveted Yarn.  Robert Porter (who I sometimes call David, as did one of his school teachers because he has a cousin David that she confused him with – I have no excuse except that I am bad with names), is so cute and sweet, but also very knowledgeable about yarn, which he has to be because of all the colors, varieties, styles, shapes, weights, textures, fibers, strengths, patterns, flexibility, uniformity, and sizes of yarn that he carries.  I don’t knit, but I love going into Coveted Yarn because of the veritable feast of colors, shapes and textures that astound you as you walk into his shop, and because Robert is so nice to visit with.  If you do knit, you will find yourself knitting your brow trying to decide what to buy; but Robert will be right there to help you make the right decision for your project.  I have listened to him patiently talking customers through the ordeal of picking just the right yarn.  Even if you don’t knit, but have friends that do, it is a great place to pick up a really cool skein of yarn as a gift – and maybe they’ll knit something really nice for you.   As one Yelper said: “This is one great place to find quality yarn at a reasonable price.”  He also carries all the accoutrements of knitting that you could need.  And That’s No Yarn!

GMG Guest Contributor Of The Week- Anthony Marks lobsterpot in the sand

Anthony Marks is a life long resident of Gloucester. Enployed for the last 34 years by the Gorton group in Gloucester.
He likes to shoot landscapes and seascapes as well as people and pets. He as a few cameras and shoots with a Kodak Z1012 IS,Canon Rebel XT and a Canon SX 30 IS,they are all digital cameras. Anthony has been intrested in photography for 30 years and shoots free style.  He also helps out with the Gloucester pride stride,the flags on the boulvard, the santa parade,Kent circle tree lighting and the northshore holiday toy drive.

Temple Achim Ahavat On The Move

The members of Temple Ahavat Achim held a joyous procession from their

temporary quarters to their new synagogue building on Middle Street.

More than three years after a disastrous fire destroyed their home,

they celebrated the new building that rose on their old site. They are

delighted to be staying in the heart of downtown Gloucester, and are

immensely grateful to all their Cape Ann friends. An open house for

the Cape Ann community will take place on Sunday, June 5, from

2:30-4:00.

Earth Day Fund-raising Whale Watch Trip
Gloucester, Saturday May 7, 2011 (rain date May 8)

    The Whale Center of New England is proud to announce its annual Earth Day Whale Watch. The trip is a celebration of our commitment to conservation, and of the return of the humpback whales to New England; it also marks the start of our field season! This year’s trip is scheduled to run from 9 AM to 4 PM on Saturday May 7 (rain date May 8). The trip is a fundraiser for The Whale Center, and all proceeds go to our whale research and conservation programs.
    The humpback whales, which spend much of the winter in tropical seas in the West Indies, start to return in early April. Last year’s trip was great with lots of actively feeding humpback whales. This was the kick-off to a tremendous season that lasted throughout 2010. We’re hoping to have a similar kick-off in 2011!
    This year we are fortunate to have many Whale Center Alumni joining us to narrate the whale watch trip. You will have a day during which you will see great whale activity and learn a lot about the whales we study.
   The trip costs $55 for Whale Center members ($65 for non members); $45 for all children under age 12. Join when you make your reservation and get the member price for the cruise. We’ll provide free hot drinks and there’s a full galley on board. The large cabin on the vessel provides ample cover from the cold but we suggest you dress warmly!
    To make reservations for the Earth Day Whale Watch, please call our office at 978-281-6351. Space is limited, so make your reservations early. We look forward to seeing you on May 7th!

The Whale Center of New England (WCNE) was founded in 1980 to study the whales frequenting waters off the Massachusetts coast, especially Stellwagen Bank and Jeffreys Ledge. We conduct field research from our research vessel Mysticete, and from public whale watch boats.

Tammy Cohen Represents! In Minnesota (Don’t You Know?)

Hi Joey:
It was nice meeting you last week! As promised here is some GMG
representation in Minnesota. Just for the record, this 44 foot tall
snowman is not actually made of snow. That said, it is supposed to
snow here again tonight. (Can I come back to Gloucester now?)
And by the way – the lobsters we purchased from you were amazing. 🙂
