Oarmaster’s Cup & dory removal From the International Dory Racing Committee

It’s time to compete for the Oarmaster’s Cup.

This Sunday, October 11th at 10 AM the International Dory Racing Committee will hold the annual Oarmaster’s Cup Race (solo dory race) to crown the best single dory rower  in the land.  All members are welcome to compete, and the public is welcome to attend the races for some exciting waterfront entertainment!

The course will start off the end of the dock at Maritime Gloucester and travel out around Ten Pound Island, then back to the start (approximately 1.75 miles).  The race dories are provided by the IDRC, but unlike the other races, this race allows individual rowers to compete head to head in a time trial with the best time winning rights to the Cup.  Refreshments will follow the races offering a chance for the winner to soak up the admiration of his peers.  Don’t miss this battle of skill and endurance on the water in Gloucester Harbor.
The following weekend, Saturday, October 17th at 9:00 AM, we need members to help out pulling the race dories for the season.  We will meet at Eastern Ave. Self Storage (bring a trailer if available) and we will proceed to the GHS boat ramp to load up the 4 race dories and return to the tent for the winter.  Many hands make light work (especially nesting a couple 800# dories), so please mark your calendars for the 17th.

Len Robertson ’11 & ’13 with Erik Dombrowski ’14 and the coveted Ormaster’s Cup.

Welcome To 2015 Gloucester International Dory Racing

Welcome to Spring Dory Rowers

Time to renew your membership to the IDRC.

After a tough New England Winter, we have made it to the start of Spring and the weather is improving bringing thoughts of getting out on the harbor for a row.  Many thanks to our team of bailers (mostly Alex Thomas & Lois McNulty) who braved the elements to keep our dories free of snow, water and ice every week this winter.  Don’t forget to sign up/pay up for your 2015 membership; now available for your convenience by credit card at our website www.internationaldories.com.  Our 2015 Events Schedule is attached with your sign-up forms.  Please send your forms with your payment and note the “prep” dates to help prepare our dories for the season.

See you on the water!

As 2014 comes to a close, we would like to wish all of our members and friends of the IDRC a happy and safe holiday season.  We are certainly fortunate to have dories to row and a beautiful harbor to row in (winter and summer)!  We remember those who can no longer get out on the water, and look forward to another great year of dory rowing and racing in 2015.

International Dory Racing Sign Ups! Get Involved!!!

IDRC Members:

A new year is upon us and I hope you will make dory rowing a part of it.  Attached you will find the schedule of events and sign-up forms necessary to continue your membership with the IDRC for 2014.  I hope you will continue another year with your recreational or race rowing in beautiful Gloucester Harbor .  It has been a long winter and although we have four dories in the water, it’s been tough to get out, but Spring will soon prevail and our rowing season will resume.  A special note for this year’s International Races is the Over 40 Men’s division has been moved by both the CDRA and IDRC to Over 50.  I hope this will entice some veteran rowers to come back to racing!  We are also planning a 2nd year of our “Learn to Row” program, but in July when we can count on a little better weather.  Please make us part of your 2014 and send in your membership today!  We will be mailing out the membership info as well, but you can save us a stamp if you send yours over the next couple weeks.

Thanks,

Erik Dombrowski

International Dory Racing Committee News

As I’ve said in the past, the paltry amount of money it costs to join the International Dorys is the best value to get yourself on Gloucester Harbor all year long.  There is nothing like the oneness with the harbor that you feel once you pull away from the berth and all you hear is the woosh of your oars in the water. Check out the website here for more info

Hope your offseason workouts are going well!

It has been a great winter for rowing enthusiasts with the weather offering little cold, snow or ice to deal with.  The dates are set and the schedule is posted for the 2012 Season with our first boat maintenance date on March 31st.  We have also planned a 60th Anniversary dory fundraiser & Season kick-off party at the Legion on Saturday, May 12th, so save the date!

Dues letters will be going out soon, but you can save us a stamp by logging on to our websitewww.internationaldories.com, printing the membership application and sending it in.  While on the website, check out our virtual store link for dory apparel and our new facebook page that is also linked.  We are trying to organize a youth/novice program for the Spring for any new rowers that you know.  And, we are always looking for volunteers to help man our events and programs, so please let us know if you would be interested in helping out!

2010 Dory Season Rowing Note From Jimmy T

Jimmy Tarantino writes

Happy New Year! Hope you all had a great Holiday season and are ready
for another good year. The Board of Governors just had our first meeting
and got the ball rolling (. Please find attached the schedule of events
for 2010).

As a result of my being in a deep funk the last month or so, I’m sorry
to announce there probably won’t be a “Winter Races” event this year but
I promise to do the best I can to make up for it the rest of the year.

We got news last fall that Wayne Spindler has stepped down from the
Canadian Dory Committee and is being replaced by Kelly George. Wayne, we
thank you for your years of dedicated service. Personally, I thank you
for helping show me the ropes and giving me a good example.  Kelly,
welcome aboard and please don’t hesitate to let me know if there is
anything I can do to smooth the ride.
I assure you we Americans will give you the same bullsh……uh….I
mean…respect we did Wayne! 🙂

As we embark upon a new rowing season, I’d like to let you all know
we’ve got a bunch of new Shaw and Tenney oars in, which cost a little
more than what we’re used to but your getting a way better oar!

We hope to have an “all hands” meeting soon, and we’ll be asking anyone
interested to volunteer a little time, there are openings on the Board
of Governors. This is your opportunity to help steer the IDRC and only
takes a few hours of your time a year! E-mail me if your interested.

Anyone planning on competing in the Open race this year, if you haven’t
been training hard for the last several months, you should probably
consider other options. I hear there’s a Tiddlywinks Tournament at the
Senior Center!

That’s all for now, see you down the dories!

To find out how you can be involved all year long with the dories for a mere $50 (including access to the dories for a full year check out the Gloucester International Dory Site Here

Lobstermen Truck Series- Joe Sanfilippo

Here is Joe Sanfilippo’s Chevy pick up truck.

Joe carries the normal stuff that skiff lobstermen carry in the back of their pick up trucks- fuel jugs, water jugs, covered fish totes to put bait in, some random buoys.

What you might also notice in the back of Joe’s truck are the dory oars and bench set up that he uses to train for the upcoming International Dory races. Joe is an avid rower and always a contender to represent Gloucester with his partner in the International Dory Races between Gloucester and Lunenburg.

He lobsters out of a 22 foot Eastern skiff after work at Gloucester Engineering and on weekends with his son Ryan.
