Schooner Adventure’s Gloucester’s Working Waterfront Walking Tour

Meet the guide at 10 am at the Fishermen’s Statue
Come join Schooner Adventure for a 90 minute guided walking tour of the Gloucester Working Waterfront, starting at the Fisherman’s Statue and ending on Harbor Loop. We will be looking at old photographs and maps, taking us back to the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Old companies and buildings will be identified at their original locations as we make our way down the Boulevard, Rogers St. and Harbor Loop.

LOCAL FILMMAKER PRODUCES TWO DOCUMENTARIES AIRING ON BOSTON TV IN JUNE
They might not sound like related subjects—urban gang violence and maritime history—but Beverly filmmaker Ted Reed has a wide range of interests when it comes to reality story-telling. Making their premieres on Boston stations WBZ TV and WSBK TV, the first show, “Hitting Home,” investigates the human toll of youth violence in Boston and Springfield, and what these communities are doing to stop it. The second, “The Insider’s Guide to Boston Harbor—The Islands,” takes a journey to one of Massachusetts’ more unusual, and little known, national parks: Boston’s harbor islands.
“To me, both topics are as different as can be, on the surface,” says Reed, winner of 13 Emmy awards. “But both relate to how communities value their assets, and the commitments and interactions that follow. The real solutions to the tragedy of youth violence in Boston and Springfield don’t just come from government agencies; they rely on individuals and groups coming together to create positive change. And the Boston harbor islands were saved from ecological disaster because concerned citizens pressured their government to act.”
“Hitting Home” is sponsored by the US Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative, and airs at 2pm June 23rd on WBZ TV and again at 10:30pm June 25 on WSBK TV. “The Insider’s Guide to Boston Harbor—the Islands” is sponsored by the National Park Service, the Greater Boston Visitors and Convention Bureau, and the Boston Harbor Island Alliance, and airs at 10:30 pm June 24 on WSBK TV and again at 11:30pm June 30 on WBZ TV.
“The US Attorney’s Office in Boston was looking for a way to reach young people who might be on the verge of joining as gang, and give them some idea of who is affected by their decisions to be part of their communities or part of the problem,” Reed offers. “We used a filming technique where our interviews–victims, former gang members, law enforcement and other leaders–looked directly into the camera while they told their stories. These are all intensely personal narratives, and they speak right to the audience about what they mean to them.”
“The Insider’s Guide to Boston Harbor—the Islands” was a product of Reed’s interest in the reclamation of Boston Harbor from the infamous “Harbor of Shame” to the recreational destination it is now becoming. “To see the islands transformed from city dump to nature sanctuary makes anyone familiar with them feel optimistic about their future.” The show follows that progress and showcases some of the out-of-the-way treasures visitors can find on the islands. “It’s amazing. You can stand on Spectacle Island and see the city that seems so close, and yet here you are in the most peaceful, rural place you can imagine.”

TRIBUTE TO JACKIE HARDY SCHEDULED FOR JUNE 22
Jackie Hardy will be honored at a reception on June 22, 2013, from 5-6:30 p.m. at the Gloucester House restaurant. Ms. Hardy represents Bay View, Annisquam, and Lanesville on the City Council and serves as Council president. The proceeds from this event will be donated to the new Gloucester Dog Park.
