Cape Ann Artisans are part of a vibrant arts community, located along the scenic North Shore of Massachusetts that includes three important cultural districts. For the past two years Gloucester has been named one of the country’s top ten Art Destinations by American Style Magazine. Come visit us, explore our exquisite natural surroundings and see the fine art and craft that they inspire. Many Artisans are open year round; during non-tour times please call for an appointment to view our work.

The tour is free and self-guided. Professionally printed brochures containing the studio descriptions and the tour map are available at all studios, the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce, the Rockport Information Booth on Rte 127, and many other public venues; meanwhile, at home you can download and print the PDF to plan your trip. Print it out, mark it up, or just keep it on your portable device (smartphone, tablet,…) for travel.  As you approach each artisan studio on the road a bright, magenta Studio Tour banner will mark the studio location.

As always, for a comprehensive list of family activities, please visit our friends at North Shore Kid

It’s tough to match Gloucester for the range and depth of fall art fairs and events –including American Craft Week– and Gloucester’s heritage of artists and artisans of yesterday and today (more on the pioneers below.) Pauline Bresnahan participates and drummed up the vote: “Gloucester has always encouraged creativity, individuality and artistic expression. Honored to be able to participate and encourage others to take part in this celebration for everyone who has fallen in love with their art and craft that shows their creativity.”

VENERABLE ARTS  TRADITION

Start with a visit to Cape Ann Museum a world class American art museum with a not to miss fine art and archive collections founded in 1873. Just Go! Outsider art and fine craft maker high lights include Folly Cove designers repository,  1893 Columbian Exposition Chicago World’s Fair harbor diorama, Fiesta oars, and the Community of Neighborhoods quilt cycle.

In each and every decade, printed ephemera and guides capture Gloucester’s long proud cultural history. Guides matter. Here are a couple of pioneer examples with a craft emphasis from the 1960s and 1892. American Craft Week is the digital equivalent of a who’s who in the American craft scene.

1960s

“We are told in the print that the American public is hungry for art…untouched by the machine. Cape Ann craft workers can satisfy that hunger…given a chance.” Henry Bollman, 1961

1892

The Art and Loan Exhibition for The Celebration of the Two Hundred and Fiftieth Anniversary of the Incorporation of the Town of Gloucester held August 24-29   featured “a representation collection of the antique and artistic from the many homes on Cape Ann…In connection with the exhibit a souvenir silver scarf pin was sold representing a fishing schooner under full rig with the dates 1642-1892 in raised work, and found ready purchasers…A piece of room paper from the walls of the old Ellery House, the first wall paper used in Gloucester, is exhibited…an interesting bit of fancy work is a frame inscribed in letters worked in silk Hannah Masters her Sampler May 8 1768…Another piece of family work which shows evidence of much labor and painstaking is a Clark family tree worked in silk on canvas in 1832 by Mary B. Clark, mother of Mayor Andrews…” The loan and art committee were reimbursed  $1195.81; the souvenir pins inventory was $211.40. Thankfully the city published a “true and detailed account of the 250th anniversary observance and illustrated these Lane and Beach works. The 1817 view of Gloucester by Capt Beach was loaned by Asa G. Andrews, too. JB Foster was the one and only artist on the extensive exhibition checklist (321 detailed items) that listed his work for sale $100 “At the Wharf Gloucester Harbor”. James Pringle wrote the seminal digitized “History of the town and city of Gloucester, Cape Ann, Massachusetts” 1892.

About the CAA

The members of Cape Ann Artisans, while diverse in our art and expression, share a common sense of place on Cape Ann. Whether we were born and raised in the area, left and returned from other places, or found Cape Ann later in life, we draw our aesthetics and our inspiration directly from the color, light, and vistas of our environment.

Cape Ann Military Support Group

The Cape Ann Military Support Group is "Springing" into action with a special event on Thursday, March 29 at 7 p.m. at the Frank Ritvo Veterans Center, 12 Emerson Ave. Gloucester.

Cape Ann resident, Teresa Tocantins will present a new program called "Yoga Warriors" for all Veterans and their families.

Most people have heard about the benefits of Yoga, but  a recent study conducted on our Iraq troops has shown that  special yoga methods  can reduce PSTD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder).

The new "Yoga Warrior Method"  is a pro-active way of managing combat stress and improving  the focus of our returning troops who may be trying to manage the more silent wounds of battle. Ms. Tocantins will discus how sleep habits, irritability, concentration, anger management, and intrusive thoughts of images, loneliness, self blame and sadness have been improved.  It is a way for our troops as well as stressed family members of returning troops to find healing in relaxing.

We are fortunate that Ms. Tocantins has chosen to make this program available here on Cape Ann.  Let’s all spring together and welcome all our Vet’s from all wars  home to such a great program.

Cape Ann Artisan Tour this Saturday and Sunday 10AM to 5PM

Joey already posted two weeks ago here about the 2011 Cape Ann Artisan Tour but it’s only two days away. This is one of Rubber Duck’s favorite events so get out and find her.

Rubber Duck Quick Tip: click and print this brochure. A simple map and description of the 14 stops. You get tours of pottery studios, find out how they fire those pots, see the world’s biggest color printer, all sorts of cool stuff. If you do not know the artists that are hiding in the woods on this island this is a great way to find a bunch of them.
