Blizzard of 1978: see more Armand Sindoni art at Destino’s and #GloucesterMA- Part 2
Armand Sindoni (1929-2002) was a Massachusetts native. He resided and worked on Rocky Neck. For many years he was the artist in residence for the Gloucester Schooner Festival. This is a follow up post.
Earlier this week, I posted a GMG reader request wanting to know more about a specific Armand Sindoni work of art. I added one Sindoni portrait and asked readers to join in.
GMG reader Kathy reminded us about the Sindoni murals at Destino’s:
“Armand Sindoni painted the beautiful murals inside Destino’s. One of the vessels in the murals is the “Can Do”. It was lost during the blizzard of ‘78, going to the rescue of a huge freighter that was off of Beverly, that is also in the mural. The other vessel in Sindoni’s mural is the “Alligator”, a fishing vessel that was also lost during the blizzard.“

PURITAN HOUSE built in 1810 by Col. James Tappan* is a historic house at 3 Washington Street and 2 Main Street. Also known as: Tappan’s Hotel, Gloucester Hotel (“Tappan’s Folly”), Atlantic House, Mason House, Community House, Capt Bills (1960s-70s), Puritan House & Pub (1977), Blackburn Tavern (1978-00s) *Tappan was taught by Daniel Webster
Excerpt from prior GMG post (read it here) about scenic tours by bike 1885: “And now let’s take our wheel for a short run along our harbor road to East Gloucester, and note the many points of interest on the way. The start is made at the Gloucester Hotel–the headquarters of all visiting wheelmen in the city–at the corner of Main and Washington streets; from thence the journey takes us over the rather uneven surface of Main street, going directly toward the east. In a few minutes we pass the Post Office on the left, and soon leave the noisy business portion of the street behind us, then, e’re we are aware of it, we reach and quickly climb the slight eminence known as Union Hill…” This brick building at Main and Washington now features Tonno Restaurant. Notice the chimneys and same stairs as when it was the Gloucester Hotel. The Blackburn Tavern sign was just marketing; this building has no connection. Blackburn’s Tavern is now Halibut Point restaurant at the other end of Main Street.

Hungry? Pack light. You’ll pass great sandwich shops, locally owned and operated, en route to Gloucester’s magnificent beaches. Jeff’s Variety can set you up for a good lunch to go wherever you’re headed including Good Harbor Beach, Long Beach, or the back shore. Jeff says that there are many repeat customers that come back each and every season–for years–on their way to Good Harbor Beach. IF you have a big group, you can order trays with finger sandwiches. Sandwich platters featuring Virgilio’s rolls need at least two days notice to prepare. They’re open Sundays. What else? “Yes!” the answer to my question if they have plenty of call ahead requests from cars caught in traffic. Passengers calling only, please!

WOUNDED WARRIORS WITH CAPTAIN DAVE AND NANCY MARCIANO ABOARD THE YANKEE FLEET CELEBRATE THE FOURTH OF JULY
In honor of our American military veterans and Independence Day, Wicked Tuna’s Captain Dave and Nancy Marciano are hosting a group of veterans aboard the Yankee Freedom. Captain Dave first began working with the Wounded Warrior Project about four years ago. He usually treats small groups throughout the season but his year has been incredibly busy for the Marciano’s and he needed a larger boat to bring out a larger group of vets.

Captain Dave naturally turned to Captain Tom Orrell, from where he began his fishing career. Capt. Orrell owns and operates Yankee Fleet Fishing. Orrell was all on board with the idea and has donated his largest ship, the Yankee Freedom. Jim Destino donated lunch and Mayor Romeo Theken and the City helped organize gift bags.

The one part I would say would not be a fair comparison is Cape Ann brewing based on price since their price includes fries, slaw and a pickle. However even if you threw the value category out Cape Ann Brewing would have come in last.
Captain Hooks wins People Choice with far and away most number of nominations.
Overall Best Gloucester Steak Bomb Challenge winner Based on Value, Taste, Packaging, Lack of Sogginess and Equal Distribution of Meat is Destinos.
Once again it was noted by all four judges that each one of these subs was a winner. To be nominated out of all the incredible sub shops in Gloucester is in itself a testament to how great each one of these Steak Bombs are and Cape Ann Brewing, Captain Hooks, Leonardos and Destinos all deserve accolades

Dramatic Come From Behind Win For Newly Crowned GMG Gloucester Steak Bomb Champ Destinos!!!!
After four rounds it looked like Captain Hooks Had It In The Bag But in the Final Taste Round (accounting for 40% of the scores) Destinos Pulled Out A Dramatic Come From Behind Win.
We had Bex, Chris DeWolfe, Kim Smith and Brianmoc go in for the sub pick-ups last night. Brought the subs in and weighed and recorded the weights and sequestered the judges in a separate room while we marked each sub Sub A, Sub B, Sub C and Sub D to insure no bias and a blind tasting.
Judges Ed Collard, Chris DeWolfe, Brian O’Connor and Craig Kimberley took their judging duty very seriously. Dieting at Destino’s
I’ve been on a diet the last week and a half and really watching what I eat by tracking my calories and exercise in the “My Fitness Pal” app on my iPhone. I’ve actually been doing really well monitoring how many calories I have for each meal and not going over my daily limit of 1200. I give myself plenty of calorie room for dinner, because hat’s usually when I use the most. Well, Destino’s eggplant parmesan sub and fries were no exception. I still to was able stay on track, but in order to eat this and not feel guilty I had to add some extra elliptical time.
The whole time on the elliptical all I could think of was this:
Once I burned enough calories I let myself enjoy this Destino’s masterpiece and amazing fries. I estimated this to be a 900 calorie meal for small eggplant parm sub and 1/2 of the fries (please don’t tell me I went over). I hope I have your mouth watering and your legs moving all at the same time. I won’t eat like this everyday, but I think you have to give yourself a treat once in a while.

I like how they fry the potatoes. Nothing worse to me than undercooked breakfast potatoes.
