Looping back from Dunfudgin and the high school to Emerson Avenue, I was delighted to encounter the soft and striking mural on the Pathways building, across the street from Open Door and the Veteran’s center.
It’s a city block long!
Gail McCarthy wrote a great piece about the project in the Gloucester Daily Times.

Here is a selection of some of the exterior public art murals in Gloucester. Depending upon your device, double click or pinch and zoom to enlarge and/or right click to see the credit details. Calling all Gloucester, Cape Ann, North Shore and New England area artists! One monumental exterior wall and two interior sites are available for commission submission in downtown Gloucester on the new apartment building, Harbor Village. The exterior mural $5500 (fee & materials. Lift will be supplied.) Two mural opportunities (10 x 10; 10 x 15) inside are $2000 each (fee & materials).
“North Shore Community Development Coalition (NSCDC) and Action Inc. have partnered together to bring new art into downtown Gloucester through the Punto Urban Art Museum (PUAM)…The goal for this call is to provide opportunities for local/regional artists to bring life and color into downtown of Gloucester. Selected Artists/teams will be a part of efforts in celebrating the 400th anniversary of Gloucester!”
Submission Deadline Sunday May 2, 2021- midnight; project completion target end of summer 2021.
Harbor Village: a new mixed income apartment building developed by Action Inc. and North Shore Community Development Coalition on 206 Main Street at Elm (formerly Cameron’s) now under construction.

Action, Inc. continues a tradition of supporting the arts with these new commissions. The organization has a history of collaboration with community arts partners, commissioning original public art for its buildings, and preserving any historic assets (buildings and art).

Artist experience runs the gamut: outsider and novice artists; community collaborations (with established artists helping youth); and solo endeavors (from trained professionals whether emerging or midcareer, established and revered).

Armand Sindoni (1929-2002) was a Massachusetts native. He resided and worked on Rocky Neck. For many years he was the artist in residence for the Gloucester Schooner Festival. This is a follow up post.
Earlier this week, I posted a GMG reader request wanting to know more about a specific Armand Sindoni work of art. I added one Sindoni portrait and asked readers to join in.
GMG reader Kathy reminded us about the Sindoni murals at Destino’s:
“Armand Sindoni painted the beautiful murals inside Destino’s. One of the vessels in the murals is the “Can Do”. It was lost during the blizzard of ‘78, going to the rescue of a huge freighter that was off of Beverly, that is also in the mural. The other vessel in Sindoni’s mural is the “Alligator”, a fishing vessel that was also lost during the blizzard.“

Gray and sunny day views of the beautiful street art mural by Josh Falk on Stone Barn Lane behind Rockport Public Library, Rockport, Mass., with support from Awesome Rockport. Falk’s work on display at Blume coffee shop in Whistlestop Mall is striking. How exciting to see his vision on a monumental scale!

Countdown to Mattos Field rededication day celebration
There’s just six more days till the big event, Friday October 5th, 2018, at 4:30PM, Joseph S. Mattos Jr Memorial Field, Gloucester, Massachusetts. And we’re talking years of community preparation to make it special!

“We have a big day ahead for Joseph S. Mattos Jr. as it is his 100th. anniversary of his death and we are going to dedicate his flag to him on October 5th. 2018. We are dedicating his flag and we are also having a flyover as we raise the flag. A pilot named Rich Little is going to do it with his friends. He runs a charity Flights4CF as his daughter has this disease. The ceremony starts at 4:30 and the program is beautiful. The day will be completed with a softball game with the Softball Buddies special needs team and then food at the Gloucester Fraternity Club up the street as they have donated the hall to us for free. We are very thankful to the city, the Light Up Mattos Committee, our C.P.A., Lucia Amero and Cape Ann Veterans Services, and everyone who has worked so hard on this field! It’s a big big list! Last year Joey wondered about the wall murals on Parsons (walkway between Main and Rogers) added after the 350ft’ street temporary mural.

The Parsons Street wall murals were created by a lot of people including fine artists, teachers, and kids: Jason Burroughs, Laura Donworth, Kyra Moyer, Aiden Symes, Avery Mcniff, Teen Artist Guild, and Cape Ann Art Haven summer kids. One request from the building owner was that they include a reference to Gloucester’s Man at the Wheel as part of the overall composition. The long mural features iconic Gloucester architecture, history and themes (see the great whale!) . The Man at the Wheel depiction was pulled out and featured on its own; locals aware of the former owner’s affiliation with Sam Adams enjoyed the extra nod. Photos above are from 2015.

Nice letter from Patti Amaral in today’s Gloucester Daily Times writing on behalf of the city’s Clean City Initiative. She thanked the city, donors and supporters while providing some background about the Carry In Carry Out art. In case you missed it: Nov 9 2017 Letter to the Editor
The murals were refurbished by Jason Burroughs in October 2017. They were designed and painted by Bob Viau from StudioVo 15 years ago. Here are a few photos documenting the refurbishing. The Wingaersheek wall needed more attention.

On November 2 2017 David Brooks and Jason Burroughs re-installed the Action Inc public art mural, Harbor and Home, which was newly repainted by Burroughs.
Cole Herbst was the original artist of the Home and Harbor mural, installed in 2010. Herbst used spray paint, acrylics and markers. Fellow artists Jake Stafford and Giacomo Vorhees helped Herbst with the project, and Jason Burroughs was involved a bit, too. Burroughs and Herbst were students together in the Compass youth program, Action Inc. Burroughs and Herbst have been in contact about the condition of Harbor and Home and settled on the current solution. Herbst is living overseas and is pleased Burroughs revived the mural and its new iteration.

but not for long! Danny Diamond is completing the monumental Cape Ann Brewery mural wrap on the Rogers Street side today.
Cape Ann Brewery is located at 11 Rogers Street on the water by St. Peter’s park. If you’re in town it’s a gorgeous day for a harbor walk to check the painting out LIVE! I’ll post more info and photographs of the mural in progress.

Look up downtown if you haven’t yet seen the wonderful Pleasant & Main ARTISPHERE sign designed and project-boosted by artist and dealer, Ken Riaf. Then head on into his Jeffrey Marshall exhibit Law & Water Gallery.
I bet you’ve seen that Ed Touchette painting catching your eye through Trident’s window—last days to see the group exhibit at Trident Gallery. Just one week away from Ed Touchette’s solo exhibit at Trident. East Gloucester and Veterans School parents please get ready to bring your kids to see his exhibit. East Gloucester kids can find an Mr. Touchette throwback tucked away on East Main. Here’s a snapshot – try and find it.
Pass through Parsons down to Rogers or up to Main to see the progress of the artists of Art Haven/Hive. Their wall mural along a private building of Parsons Street is coming along and their depiction of Man at the Wheel is filling in…check it out! We have cleaned and scrubbed out graffiti on many walls, more than once, and are happy to see new public art added alongside the temporary FISH NET street mural and Dress Code’s.
I’m not sure what artist, Bob Stephenson, would have thought of the latest mural, but I wish he could have seen it. I do know he liked the Calderwood Fish Net mural and was grateful to have the graffiti painted out, the lights installed and anytime we swept and weeded.
Special thanks this week to the folks with Dan Leaman Landscaping and Maintenance Corp for extra clean up and weeding along Parsons Street.
