Pete Frates Charity Auction

Dear Joey,
I write to you hoping that you are willing to assist in spreading the
word about a charity auction I am running for a young man with
numerous ties to Gloucester. Pete Frates is a 27 year old from
Beverly. His uncle is Chris Frates of the Gloucester Police Department
and his aunt is Erin Frates, the civil clerk at Gloucester District
Court.
Pete was recently diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s Disease (ALS). He has
made it his mission to raise awareness about the disease and I have
made it my mission to raise money to defray his significant uninsured
medical costs. You can learn more about Pete at www.petefrates.com.
We’re running an online auction at www.bizulu.com/PeteFrates on
Sunday, September 30, 2012. The auction starts at 8:00 p.m. and people
can take part from the comfort of their homes. Most of the prizes I
managed to secure for the auction were donated by the generous people
from the Cape Ann area and I thank them for that!
Thanks in advance for any help you are willing to provide.
Highest Regards,
Joe Orlando

Hi Joey – I’m moving back to Gloucester to a condo – can’t wait to get involved in the block parties, the Hive, and the Rocky Neck Community Center.  I’ve been keeping track of all the great things going on thanks to you and the contributors.
!  Anyway, I remember reading something on the blog about an insurance agency you recommended.  I need to get homeowner’s insurance. So if you could please email me the name of the agency I’d appreciate it.  Also, if you know any companies that paint, service heating/cooling units, do general repairs I’d also appreciate those names.  I need to have a few things done to the condo before I move my furniture into it.  Thanks so much!  Leslie

Kate Lufkin Represents! In Zimbabwe

Hey Joey. We’ve met a few times, I’m Kate Lufkin, Laurie Lufkin’s sister.  Your wife also went to high school with my sister Sarah.

Anyway, I just took a trip to Zimbabwe and Mozambique to volunteer at an HIV clinic for a few weeks (but I had some fun while I was there, too!) and Laurie reminded me to bring along my sticker…So, here they are! The first one is me on the campus of Africa University (where I was based out of for teaching. I was considered faculty…wtf??) Same with the 2nd and the 3rd. The 5th and 6th are at Victoria Falls, one of the most incredible things I’ve ever seen in my life…Finally the last one is on a boat cruise I took on the Zambezi river. It was pretty awesome! I saw elephants, crocs, hippos, you name it!

Feel free to use all or none of them, but I thought I’d send them along.

Thanks for your blog, I love it!

Kate

Top 10 ways to have the most fun @ tonight’s BLOCK PARTY ~ The last one in 2012

  1. Don’t sweat the weather.  It will be nice.
  2. If you want to sit down and eat in a restaurant MAKE A RESERVATION.  Here’s a list of restaurants offering al fresco dining  (with phone numbers).
  3. Wear layers (it will be clear, but cooler than you’re used to tonight).
  4. Bring the family.  No need to pay for a sitter.  There’s plenty of entertainment for kids.
  5. MOTHERS: Re-read #3 and don’t complain that you’re cold and want to go home early.  Your husband isn’t cold just because he doesn’t have a coat on.  Neither are your kids.  I don’t want to hear anybody say, “You make me cold just looking at you.”
  6. Embrace walking.  That’s the point.  Don’t waste time looking for the closest possible parking space to Main St.  It’ll only infuriate you, which isn’t the best way to start off the night.  Here’s how I look at it: I can eat more because I’m walking it off!
  7. If you don’t like the entertainment, walk a little.  You’re bound to find something you like.  Then come back to where you were.  Entertainment at each stage changes every hour.  See the entertainment lineup here.
  8. If your kids don’t like the music you like, send them to Rick Doucette at Kid Town or Daddy O’Keefe in front of Mark Adrian Shoes.  See map here.
  9. If you really must have inside entertainment, go see Rita Chiarelli, Canada’s queen of the blues, LIVE at Cape Ann Community Cinema at 7:30pm (costs $15, but worth it).
  10. Be prepared to see friends and neighbors you haven’t seen in a while ~  SMILE, you’re at a PARTY!

Holy Family Parish Picnic

Last weekend, Holy Family parish had it’s annual outdoor Mass and picnic at Stage Fort Park.  I didn’t get any photos of the outdoor Mass, because I consider it inappropriate (at best) to pull out a camera and take photos while wearing liturgical vestments and concelebrating the service. However, I got some nice photos of the fun that came afterwards.  As I am going away on vacation for a week, I will post shots of the different activities in a series of posts.

Today: the men of our local Knights of Columbus cooking and serving a tasty meal!

Cape Ann is home to a thriving arts community, one of the oldest in the country.  For twenty-nine years Cape Ann Artisans has been inviting the public to visit their studios during their Open studio weekends.

This year’s fall tour will be held October 6th – 8th, Columbus Day Weekend from 10 am to 5 pm each day. The self-guided tour along the scenic coastline of Gloucester and Rockport presents a unique opportunity to meet 21 professional artists and see their work in the setting in which it was created.

The work represented includes: pottery, painting, sculpture, photography, mosaics, jewelry, hand-made glass beads, and weaving. Several of the artists will be demonstrating their working process during the tours.

Brochures with route maps will be available at the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce, the Rockport Information Booth on Rte 127 and at each of the artisans. A bright magenta Studio Tour banner will mark each location.

For further information phone: 978-281-3347  www.capeannartisans.com

Painted Lady or American Lady?

In response to Marty’s question ~

American Lady (Vanessa virginiensis) ~ Note the two large eyespots on the underside of the hindwing, close to the outer margin.

Marty your photo is that of the Painted Lady. Typically in our region we would most often see the American Lady however, this is an irruptive year for the Painted Lady. There has been a population explosion of Painted Ladies reported throughout New England and beyond, which is especially unusual and interesting because this past spring (2012) was also an irruptive year for the closely related Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta).

The easiest way to tell the difference: Painted Ladies have four large spots on the underside of their hindwings, close to the outer margins, which you can easily see in your lovely photo. American Ladies have two “eyespots” on each hindwing, and the spots are considerably larger.

Painted Lady  (Vanessa cardui) ~ Note the four large spots on the hindwing.

I am calling the summer of 2012 the “summer of ten thousand butterflies.” Just incredible! I would have answered this is in the comment section, but I don’t know if it is possible to add a photo and will post more in a future post about the two species but am in the middle of making dinner. Did you take this shot with your new camera?
