FOR THOSE THAT JUST DON’T KNOW… IT’S DA GREASY POLE!!!!

For youz not in the know, the 2013 Greasy Pole contest starts today at 4:45 at Pavilion Beach (if you don’t know where that is, just listen and follow your ears, fool). The first event took place in 1931, so this is the original “X-GAMES” kids. From all accounts, it appears that it will be high tide, or close to it, on every day for the walkers. If you’ve never experienced this event live, I suggest you do so today, Saturday, and Sunday (the day of Champions). And if you don’t have a friggin’ idea what I’m talking about, watch last years amazing winner Saturday, Nick Avelis, it’s a Ball Busta!  click the gear for HD…(now you know, so get your asses out there!)

Cape Ann Community Cinema Fiesta Weekend

Buona Fiesta!

It’s that time of year again, when our neighborhood in Gloucester’s West End is taken over by elated revelers, Greasy Pole walkers, and the sons and daughters of this humble fishing village coming home for this 5-day holiday. As we share a building with the St. Peter’s Club, where the famous statue resides for the 364 days out of the year when he’s not painting the Fort red-and-green, we have become molto sensible (very sensitive) to the tastes of our Italian members and friends. This is why we have special programming during Fiesta week and Columbus Day weekend.

Is Rockport trying to steal you away from Fiesta?

Generally speaking, I’m not a conspiracy theorist.  But now that we know the N.S.A. is reading our emails and listening to our phone calls, I’ve begun to look at things with a slightly more suspicious eye.

So when I go to the gimmesound live music listings for Cape Ann tomorrow and notice that the first 2 shows are both in Rockport — and both Free, it’s got me wondering, “Just what’s going on here?”  They’ve got David Coffin at Shalin Liu at 1o am.  And they’re not really pushing that show either.  It’s buried on a page featuring a number of community concerts and events.  To look at it you’d think Rockport Music was giving back to the community — being a good citizen.

Brad ByrdBut then I see the Rockport Farmer’s Market has local rock star Brad Byrd performing at 11:30.  Now what’s that all about?  What’s an award-winning indie rock star like Brad Byrd doing at a farmer’s market?  You’re probably gonna say it’s because he’s from Rockport and he likes to give back to the community.  But wait.  Don’t you see a pattern here?  Do see what I’m seeing?

Under the guise of appearing like good citizens, the “good people” of Rockport are really up to no good.  They’re trying to steal the crowds away from Fiesta.  They want you in Rockport early and think they’re gonna keep you all day so you can see Bob Allison on the Grand Piano at the Emerson at 6pm — also free .  Don’t be fooled.  It’s Fiesta.  You live in Gloucester.  Know what I mean?

Pet of the Week-Lily!

Lilly

Hello!  My name is Lilly!  I am a sweet, cuddly and playful three-month-old female Lab/Retriever/Chow Newfoundland mix. My siblings and I are at the Cape Ann Animal Aid, located at the Christopher Cutler Rich Animal Shelter, Four Paws Lane, Gloucester. We have beautiful silky and wavy black coats.  We love to play and we are all very eager to be adopted.  Please stop by and visit us.  We love meeting new people.   I can’t believe my photo is on Good Morning Gloucester – this is my favorite blog – I must! be famous now!

I love it when the nice volunteer takes me outside to swim in the kiddy pool, then I get to play in play yard and run, then we play ball and then I need a nap and I think the nice volunteer needs one more than I do!   Check our website at: CapeAnnAnimalAid.com to learn more about our upcoming events.  We also have a “wish list” of items we need such as large trash bags, paper towels, bleach, etc.  It is ok to bring toys over for shelter cats and dogs…I will greet you with open paws!!

Going “Bananas” for vintage clothes

Among the many second-hand stores in Gloucester, some are “generalists” (the church and charity-affiliated thrift shops, Main Street Arts and Antiques, etc..) and others are specialized in things like books, music, or clothes. Today we look at one that specializes in vintage clothing and accessories: Bananas (78 Main St)!
_Bananas façadeI have heard from many people that this is the go-to place for vintage clothing, jewelry and accessories for theater productions, but Bananas also sells contemporary clothing. I picked up a nice pair of suspenders here not long ago.

The store hours are 10-5 Monday-Saturday., 11-4 Sunday.  Click here to see a GMG interview with the proprietor, Richard Leonard, from four years ago.  Most of the time when I go in, I see local artist Debbie Clarke behind the counter.  Her beautiful work has been seen on this blog on more than one occasion.

I can’t help but mention that frequent GMG contributor and all-around nice guy Fred Bodin’s gallery is practically next door.  But then again, there are so many cool places and GMG contributors and friends in close proximity downtown, that if I were to list them all, I’d end up making a map of downtown Gloucester… And I mean that!

Nelson Rolihlala Mandela Quote Of The Week

“There is no passion to be found playing small ― in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.”

Nelson Rolihlala Mandela (1918-    )

image

Born into a family of royal counselors of the Xhosa people of South Africa’s Cape Province, Mandela, whose given name Rolihlala means “troublemaker”, was called Nelson by his British influenced teachers only when he began to attend school. He studied law and later joined the African National Congress rising to the presidency of its youth league in 1947. Later a member of the ANC’s executive council he was arrested and jailed numerous times culminating in his conviction for treason and his incarceration from 1962 to 1990. Even from prison his example and leadership helped overthrow the whites-only government, and he is credited with ending apartheid without the widely expected bloodbath. In the first South African election in which blacks were allowed to vote he was elected President and served in that role from 1994 to 1999, overseeing policies of national reconciliation and reconstruction. Described as the father of South African democracy, Mandela has in recent years served as counselor and elder statesman, receiving multiple international recognitions including the Medal of Freedom (US), the Order of Canada, and the Order of Merit (UK). He is currently hospitalized and in failing health.

Fiesta on Thursday From Fred Bodin

It’s 7:30 pm, the rain has stopped, and I’m venturing up the street to Fiesta-Land. When I come back to the gallery, I’ll try to post a few of the photos. Jalapenos next door is "a F’in log jam" as I overheard from one guy walking by. All of the restaurants are busy.

Big presence of the Essex County Sheriff’s Department, who were camped out on the traffic island at the intersection of Washington, Main, and Rogers Streets. One of the officers invited me to post a photo on the agency’s FB Page as he pointed to the star on the side of their vehicle. I told him they could also send their own post to me. All in good fun! I bet they’ll find this photo. Nice people.

An overall view on the way out. Law enforcement everywhere. Not busy tonight, but they will be, especially Saturday night.

Info is available at: http://gloucesterschoonerfestival.net/?p=324

The deadline for youth organizations to apply is August 1.

Youth On Water
With an eye toward the future, as well as the past, the Gloucester Schooner Festival Committee is seeking to support programs that involve young people on Cape Ann. This past year, the Committee chose to institutionalize the educational component of the Festival by providing opportunities for kids to sail on the participating schooners, as well as offering financial support to local programs that put Cape Ann kids on the water throughout the year.  Specifically, the Committee selected two organizations that foster greater knowledge and appreciation of Cape Ann’s coastal waters by providing opportunities for young people to sail, row or otherwise become immersed in our ocean environment. Two grants of $1,500 were awarded in 2012. Leading up to this year’s Festival, we will again raise funds, beyond the costs of producing the Gloucester Schooner Festival weekend, and offer similar support to youth-on-the-water organizations to be used in their 2014 season. To apply for these funds, please complete the attached application and submit by August 1, 2013.

Thanks very much!!
