The Rocky Neck Art Colony is pleased to offer guided walking tours of the neighborhood on Saturday, October 9, 2021 at 1 PM; Saturday, October 23 at 1 PM and Sunday October 24 at 10:30 AM. In appreciation of the unique continuum that is Rocky Neck today, the walking tour showcases both the rich history of Rocky Neck and the contributions and achievements of the present community. Building on the original Rocky Neck Historic Art Trail (https://trail.rockyneckartcolony.org/), the tour takes visitors on a journey from the time of Native Americans to today. The path includes many of the diverse subjects that have enriched today’s community: Native Americans, fishermen, industry, ships, tourism, transportation, celebrations, education, entertainment, and ,of course, the artists. The tour is informative and enjoyable for both guides and visitors. Tours begin at the Rocky Neck Parking Lot, end at the Cultural Center, last 1 to 1.5 hours and are limited to 10 people. Participants are encouraged to park in the parking lot located at the entrance to Rocky Neck. Comfortable shoes are encouraged. Be prepared to walk on uneven terrain. Water is available. Our pets and nature got us through the last year. Now, the Rocky Neck Art Colony wants to honor feathered, finned and furred friends with a special exhibition titled Wild Things: Animals Real and Imagined, opening August 5 at The Cultural Center at Rocky Neck.
Sixty works are on display including more than 14 sculptures, nine photographs, a selection of digital art as well as paintings, drawings and prints. Artists are from Oregon, Colorado, Louisiana and New England.
Juror Barbara Moody says that making a selection from almost 200 entries was quite the challenge: “I chose the most intriguing works that fit the theme of Wild Things: Known and Imagined,” says Moody. “Ultimately, I was forced to omit most of the domestic animals, birds and scenic environments even though they could be considered ‘wild.’ I was attracted most by those works that were unusual, curious, provocative and/or unique. “
About the Juror, Barbara Moody
Barbara Moody recently retired as a Professor of painting and drawing at Montserrat College of Art, where she also served as VP/Academic Dean for nine years. Her large-scale drawings have been shown at the Kingston Gallery in Boston, where she has had 14 solo shows. Barbara earned master’s and doctorate degrees from Harvard University, as well as a BFA from Syracuse University.
Moody serves on the Board of Rocky Neck Art Colony. She co-founded FLOAT Gallery, and will show her newest small works at the Cove Gallery on Rocky Neck in August.

Stop/Look #2 is part of the 6th annual Rocky Neck Now members show from the Rocky Neck Art Colony (RNAC). Reflecting the lives of RNAC artists over the last year, Stop/Look is online only (www.RNACExhibitions.com), but it’s so big in spirit it’s actually two shows.
Rocky Neck Art Colony members made sure the year of Covid was a year of artistic achievement. Meredith Anderson, Gloucester-based graphic designer and artist, designed the show. Anderson organized the show into categories, much as she did with the Stop/Look #1 show.
Stop/Look #2 features the work of 39 artists. There is a wide variety of work, including Abstract (Save the Animals, by Terry Del Percio-Piemonte, and Homage to Diebenkorn No 17, by Otto Laske), Sculpture & Craft (Sheltering in Partners, by Jenny Rangan), and, finally, Into Nature (Backshore Alley, by Nancy LeGendre; Fall Foliage, by Raymond Magnan, and Winter Wind by Rebecca Nagle. Materials are as varied as the artwork, from oil painting to ink jet photography, watercolor to digital, ceramic to mixed media.

Announcement from Rocky Neck
Dear Rocky Neck Community,
The Board of Trustees is very excited to announce that art colony artist member, Loren Doucette, joined the organization as RNAC Operations Manager. In this newly formed position, Loren will co-ordinate and implement the various programs of the Art Colony, schedule and supervise the Cultural Center space, provide administrative support, and communicate with both members and the public.
Loren brings positivity, warmth and a fresh new energy to the Art Colony. She is passionate about being a creative catalyst and looks forward to promoting the artists and galleries of the Rocky Neck Art Colony, collaborating with local arts and business organizations, and helping to generate a new youthful vibrancy to the art colony.
A life-long artist who focuses on painting, drawing and collage, Loren has been an exhibiting artist and teacher on Cape Ann since 2000 and a member of the Rocky Neck Art Colony for over ten years. During this time she became widely known for her appealing style and was featured in several popular shows including those at Flatrocks Gallery and Gallery 53 in Gloucester and the Tusinski Gallery in Rockport. She was recently awarded the People’s Choice Award from the show Rocky Neck Now 2019, Looking All Around.
With a BFA in Drawing and Painting from Montserrat College of Art in Beverly, Loren was recently Interim Director of Continuing Education at Montserrat where she also taught classes in pastel, drawing and painting.
She loves living by the ocean and being a part of the Cape Ann art community. In Loren’s words: “I continually fall in love with this amazing place—the people, the culture, the diversity, the natural beauty—all truly magical. I feel honored to have this position of leadership at the Rocky Neck Cultural Center and look forward to helping bring together many talented and inspired people to exhibit, perform, and tell their stories. In addition to honoring the rich artistic history that Rocky Neck holds, I am excited to be part of the next wave of artistic innovation!”

Jason Burroughs Goetemann Artist Residency 2019 – Gloucester Invitational Artist month of May opening talk May 6th
Whether as sculptor, painter, muralist, mixed media or assemblage fine artist, Gloucester-born Jason Burroughs works across media with a signature touch. Ever since I saw his inventive stepped paintings pre 2017, I wonder what would Jason do here-
2017 – inventive sculpture paintings stepped away from flat and vertical surfaces
or just about anywhere! I’ve written about the monumental walls at O’Maley ideal for professionally trained artists that are former Gloucester O’Maley grads–like Jason– at the start of their careers. Murals are common public art attractions. To date I have not seen one mural initiative with that focus. Clandenstine street art and graffiti art can break through. (Some practitioners are diametrically opposed to that commercial conceit.) Elite global street artists and muralists command hundreds of thousands of dollars through private and corporate sponsorships. Commissions this scale for young artists with degrees begin at $16,000. That’s a great our town endeavor/grant investment.

Established in 2015, this one month residency is offered by committee invitation to an inspiring and highly deserving Gloucester artist. It is understood that artistic inspiration can be difficult to attain when work and family take precedence. The artist is provided with a live-work studio for one month. Mary Rhinelander’s resonant show, Collective (un) Conscious, at Gallery 53 on Rocky Neck continues through October 14, 2018. The exhibition, a power packed installation of 12 x 12 mixed media panels, is as much about visual engagement and observation for the viewer as it’s chronicling an individual, accumulated and reflective life. There are plenty of unexpected juxtapostions, dark narratives, quirk and humor. Rhinelander has a sharp eye.

Goetemann Artist to Construct a Large Whale’s Fluke

Gloucester Ma—The Goetemann Artist Residency—a program of the Rocky Neck Art Colony, Inc. that provides artists from around the world a live/work space for a month at a time—is pleased to introduce its 2018 Environmental/Installation Artist, Australian Deborah Redwood.
To be considered for the 2018 month-long residency, artists submitted a proposal responding to the mission of Ocean Alliance, RNAC’s non-profit partner, which states in part: “Ocean Alliance strives to increase public awareness of the importance of whale and ocean health through research and public education.”
Redwood is the second Goetemann resident to work at the site following last year’s installation of a seven-foot tall Great Auk by Nathan Thomas Wilson. Redwood’s practice encompasses sculpture and installation that evokes a sense of play and comments on society’s waste. She graduated from the College of Fine Arts (Sydney) in 2006 and was awarded a one-year exchange program at Alfred University, in New York.
Beginning September 10 and continuing through September 28, visitors are invited to stroll down Horton Street to observe the artist while she constructs a large whale’s fluke (part of a whale’s tail) on the grounds of Ocean Alliance, site of the former Tarr and Wonson Paint Factory at 32 Horton Street, Gloucester. Using equipment donated by J&L Welding in Gloucester, Redwood will collect scrap metal and weld it into a sculpture rising about ten feet above the water’s edge. This is a wonderful opportunity to share an artistic experience with children while making them aware of the fragility of life in our oceans. Printed information about the artist and her process will be available on site.
Deborah Redwood is the latest artist at the Goetemann Residency and the public is invited to learn more about her work when she presents an Artist Talk on Tuesday, September 4, at 7:00 PM at the Cultural Center at Rocky Neck.
For the past decade Redwood has participated in group and solo exhibitions in Australia and overseas, including; Japan, China, India and the USA. She has also attended several artist-in-residence programs, in New York, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Vermont, Jaipur (India), Wellington (NZ), Sydney and now, Gloucester, MA. This challenging month-long project wraps up with a Closing Talk by the artist for the public at the Ocean Alliance site (weather permitting) on Friday, September 28 at 6:00 PM.

The Rocky Neck Art Colony (RNAC) opens the season with the highly anticipated “Rocky Neck Now 2018: The Annual Spring Members’ Show” running for six weeks from Thursday, March 1 through Sunday, April 8, 2018. The exhibition features recent work by more than 30 of the Rocky Neck Art Colony’s artists. This show, in both the upper and lower galleries of the Cultural Center includes a wide range of artistic interpretations with abstract, representational and expressive styles in all media, 2D and 3D. The galleries are open each Thursday through Sunday Noon-4 PM. The public is invited to meet the artists at the opening reception on Saturday, March 3, 2-5 PM. All are invited to receptions and events with refreshments, admission and nearby parking free of charge.

Special Events
The Art Colony presents two special events during the exhibition. On Sunday, March 11, 2018, at 2 PM, the public is invited to a panel discussion featuring selected participating “Rocky Neck Now” artists. Audience participation will be encouraged, and the discussion will cover a wide range of topics, many based on questions asked by audience members.
For a lovely afternoon of inspiring words and art, be sure to attend “Rising Spring,” a program of poetry readings by Nadine Boughton, Mary Cole, and Patrick Doud on Sunday, March 25 at 3 PM.
A Celebration
As this is the first exhibition since major renovations to the main gallery of the Cultural Center, “Rocky Neck Now 2018” serves as a grand re-opening celebration. Cultural Center renovations were funded in part by a generous grant from the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency that promotes excellence, inclusion, education, and diversity in the arts. The work that included the installation of updated lighting, the application of acoustic materials to improve sound quality in the hall, the addition of hangers to allow ceiling mounted installations are in place as are painting and repairs. Rocky Neck Art Colony Seeks New Members for Gallery 53 on Rocky Neck Application Deadline: March 15, 2018
The Rocky Neck Art Colony (RNAC) is seeking new members for Gallery 53 and is currently accepting membership applications for this cooperatively run gallery. Gallery 53 is ideally situated between the Rudder and Studio Restaurants on Rocky Neck Avenue in Gloucester, MA. Applications must be received by March 15, 2018. The Cultural Center at Rocky Neck, 6 Wonson Street, Gloucester, MA, was one of the few cultural districts selected as a host venue for the MCC Power of Connection Tour launch. Today’s gathering includes city and state officials: Mayor Romeo Theken, Senator Bruce Tarr & Representative Ann-Margaret Ferrante of Gloucester.
Guests are just arriving for the welcome reception. I will post all we glean from MCC new grants and updates. Gloucester has two districts: Rocky Neck and downtown Harbortown. On the walls at Rocky Neck center–the holiday group show is installed upstairs and a John Nesta tribute downstairs. I am looking forward to the upcoming poetry night featuring Jay Featherstone, Suzanne and others.

The Jeanne Greenleaf Gallery on Rocky Neck is open through the end of October. Greenleaf features figurative series that are as much about perception: large floating swimmer oil paintings and smaller pastels of fish or the human form. She renders the luminosity of the natural world in watercolor. Greenleaf resides in northern Florida, and is a former New England resident, with family still here. Greenleaf’s gallery is in the same building as artist, Stephen Lapierre whose website url is www.paintpaintpaint.org. Both galleries are around the corner from The Rudder.
