 Born in Rochester, NY in 1941, Adolphus Hailstork grew up in Albany where he studied violin, piano, organ and voice. He currently resides in Virginia Beach, Virginia. He began his studies in composition at Howard University and then attended the American Conservatory at Fontainebleau, France, where he studied with Nadia Boulanger. He received his Bachelor and Master of Music from the Manhattan School of Music and received his PhD in composition from Michigan State University. Dr. Hailstork taught at Michigan State University, then served as professor at Youngstown State University in Ohio and then became professor of music and Composer-in-Residence at Virginia’s Norfolk State University. He is currently a professor emeritus of music and Composer-in-Residence at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. He composes in all forms: symphonic works and tone poems for orchestra; concertos and numerous chamber works; duos for such combinations as horn and piano, clarinet and piano, flute and piano; numerous songs; band works and many pieces for piano and pipe organ. His works blend musical ideas from both the African American and European traditions. His most recent work is “A Knee on the Neck,” a requiem cantata for George Floyd, one of many compositions that reflect his engagement with Black history. His Sonata Di Chiesa which we will hear on July 18 is an especially rich and romantic work for strings. |

The Early Bird
With the alarm set for 4:30 a.m. yesterday Finn had his bag packed for a day on the lobster boat. He was grumpy for about a minute upon waking up but then rallied in typical Finn fashion for a day of work.
After some Fortnight and a quick nap on the steam out, it was time to haul.
Nice work, Finn. Growing up salty.

Fantastic Summer Program at Harborlight
I know that those of you with young children are in the midst of trying to plan their summers. Be sure to explore all options! Harborlight has some pretty fantastic summer offerings for your child. Their Beverly campus is very conveniently located if you should find yourself commuting out of town over the summer weeks and just a short 15 minute drive from Gloucester.
If you are looking for exciting and varied summer options for Grades PK-7 please look through their catalogue of summer offerings.
Harborlight offers one-week sessions beginning July 3rd and ending August 25th for Grades 1-7 and two four-week session for PK-Kindergarten aged children.
Elementary aged children may Sign up for one week, or sign up for all eight!

Celebrate the 4th: Visit Trustees of the Reservations and Audubon properties to see “America the Beautiful.” Come back to campus for old-school picnic lunches on the lawn, BBQ, and yard games. Make patriotic t-shirts, crafts and recipes. Spend the week designing and decorating a patriotic float and take it on parade on Friday!
Ready, Set, Chef!: Take a journey in the life of a restaurateur. We will explore what it takes to create the concept of a restaurant and what the space and menu will look like. We will travel to different restaurants on and around the North Shore learning to cook, create, serve, and run a restaurant. Students will launch their own pop-up restaurant on Friday and will be open for business.
Marine Heritage: Explore Cape Ann’s rich marine heritage. Join the marine science crew aboard the Sea Station’s vessel Endeavor. Set sail on a lobster boat, visit touch tanks and learn about ocean life in a fun, hands-on learning environment.
Rock On!: Join the band and hone your music performance and ensemble skills in a creative and fun environment. Experiment with and learn about instruments from around the world. Improvise during a percussion circle, create through sound-painting activities, and learn to express yourself through music.
History Alive: Walk the streets that hummed with the actions of the revolution, puritans, accused witches, artists and writers. Be a Colonial! Learn how to make traditional colonial foods, try colonial crafts, games and visit some of the places made famous during the founding of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and the American Revolution. Be a part of history.
A Day at the Museum: Learn about the history of art through trips to some of the North Shore’s most intriguing museums. We’ll provide a sketchbook. You bring a bag lunch, water bottle and your imagination!
Biking and Hiking: Explore nature as we hike and bike the great outdoors! We’ll study wildlife, compete in nature scavenger hunts and enjoy geocaching activities while gaining greater appreciation for the natural world.
Break a Leg!: Let’s put on a show! Enjoy the rehearsal process while learning more about stage directions, improvisation and character development. On Friday, family and friends are invited to the performance!
Small Swell: Entering grades 4-8 . Catch a wave this summer! Learn balance, coordination, timing the waves, falling and getting back on the board in this fun, educational program that is ideal for children of all surfing abilities.
Art Walk: Stand in the footprints of famous maritime artists and see the harbor through their eyes. Create your own art inspired by the seascapes and working waterfront before you. Walk Gloucester’s “Harbor Walk”, complete a scavenger hunt challenge, and stop along the way to sketch, paint, and draw. Visit the Cape Ann Museum, snack by the water, and return to campus excited to continue the creative process in both the indoor and outdoor art studios.
Coast and Compass: Entering grades 4-7 . Enjoy some great summer adventures as we kayak, hike and hit the beach. The highlight of the week will be our legendary two-night trip to the Isle of Shoal’s Star Island where you can hike, play tennis, jump off the dock, roast marshmallows over an open fire, and learn the local lore of the island!
Authors’ Corner: Become an author and illustrator! Share your love of books with friends as we read, write and illustrate our own work. Learn the craft from guests who are professional authors and artists. Children will come home with a finished product of a picture book, poetry collection, play, or graphic novel.
I Survived!: Entering grades 3-7 . Ever wondered how to start a fire, build shelter, search for food, and stay safe in the wilderness? Learn some of the basic skills taught in the Army Ranger School program and then apply your knowledge as we rough-it during a two-night camping trip in New Hampshire.
Animal League: Come spend a week with Iris the therapy dog and her friends! We will wash, groom, train, walk and play with dogs! Meet a real dog trainer and learn a few tricks yourself. Bake healthy dog treats and learn about various breeds. Have a community “dog wash” and we will give all money earned to our local dog shelter when we visit there. Bring your dog or borrow one of ours for “Bring our Dogs Day” on Friday.
Game On!: Let’s play some games! Tennis, soccer, bowling and mini-golf are among the fun activities planned for this session.
And, as the standard Summer Session Day ends, children who wish to sign up for more hours will enjoy Get in the Game: 3:00 – 4:30 daily from 7/3-8/25
Get moving as we explore the wonderful nature of games and sportsmanship. Fine- tune the skills necessary to challenge yourself in a variety of mental games, beach and lawn games and physical challenges. In the circuit of games and strategies presented, many skills will be enhanced, strategies developed, and missions accomplished.

In minimalist fashion, all you need is a water bottle, lunchbox, and *sketchbook. Develop your ability to sketch and your power of observation while harnessing the power of the masters. (*Provided)

Expand your skills working with clay at Clay Dreaming Studio in Beverly. Lessons will allow the students to work at their own pace and developing their growing understanding of the medium and ability to work through the multi-stepped process of designing an original piece.
GEOLOGY & THOMPSON ISLAND (Grades 4-8)
Hiking, geology, outward-bound experience at Thompson Island is the adventure of a lifetime! This island, located 2-miles offshore from downtown Boston, is an Outward Bound Education Center where the students will spend a full-day engaged in their science, history, and challenge activities.
Week 3: June 5- July 8
NORTH SHORE BEACHES (Grades 1-3)
Explore the north shore beaches with a new perspective. While visiting these destinations in typical fashion -sandcastles, sea glass, swimming, reading, and picnicking- we will also explore their similarities and differences in coastal science and maritime history.
THEATER ARTS (Grades 4-8)
Join our own professional playwright and performing arts director, Katie Oberlander. Learn theater games, speaking, singing and stage presence. Put it all together in an informal performance. This week will include a trip to Canobie Lake Park, NH.

Week 5: July 18- July 22
ART @ THE HIVE (grades 1-3)
The Hive in Gloucester has art facilities for all large-format and small-scale media. The gallery, classroom, and multi-use spaces are just what you need to channel your creative energy.
COSTA RICA (FULL)

Learn the art and science of motion picture photography as you create your very own short film. Learn cinema technique, how to use a filter and lens, and develop your ability to capture depth of field and focus. Edit your work and utilize all the tricks of the trade from Doug Bowker, Motion Graphics, Animation, and Digital Video. Doug is a graduate of Rhode Island School of Design. Required: SLR Video Camera (recommended), IPOD, Digital Camera, or Smart Phone
Week 6: July 25- July 29

SMALL SWELL (grades 4-8)
Learn all about the ocean as a playground for the best summer sport – surfing! Balance, coordination, swimming, timing the waves, falling and getting back on the board.
Week 7: August 1- August 5
MARINE HERITAGE 2 (grades 1-8)
Explore Cape Ann’s rich marine heritage. Join the marine science crew aboard Sea Station’s catamaran Endeavour – take a trip on a lobster boat, visit touch tanks, and learn about the ocean and life on the seashore in a fun, hands-on, learning environment. This is a sequel to Marine Heritage 1 and the adventures and learning activities will vary.
WALK ON WATER (grades 4-8)
This session has become the highlight of the upper school summer program! Water adventures on paddle boards at local beaches, road trips along the north shore coast, and the big two-night trip to the Isle of Shoals – where you can hike, play tennis, jump off the dock, roast marshmallows over an open fire, and learn the local lore of the island!
Week 8: August 8- August 12
EXPLORE ARTS (grades 1-3)
Explore media and techniques to draw, design, and live your art through drama and music. An all-encompassing eclectic approach to tapping into your talents!
MOUNTAIN BIKING & BMX (grades 2-6)
More than enjoying a great ride through the trails, this session explores the science of a BMX bike. Your kinetic energy + a bike and a good trail is all you need for this adventure! Try your skills at BMX Wakefield, a track specifically designed for national competition, with the option to compete at an evening race event. This session requires competency and accessibility to a two-wheeler.
GEOLOGY & THOMPSON ISLAND 2 (Grades 4-8)

MOUNTAIN HIKING & OVERNIGHT WITH AMC (grades 4-8)
Grab your pack and water bottle, a good pair of hiking shoes, and your appreciation of the great outdoors. You will be hiking some great peaks and spending a night at the Appalachian Mountain Club’s Cardigan High Cabin.
Week 10: August 22- August 26
MY FIRST JOB (grades 1-3)
What does it take to have the responsibility of a job? What will your first job be? Explore the opportunities that are available to the young employee or entrepreneur!

Megan performs with a number of local projects including The Megan McKenzie Band, Big Ol’ Dirty Bucket and SAFETY, to name a few. And Joestays busy with multiple projects as well including the Joe Wilkins Band,Poppa Cigar and Funk du Jour. They found time in there busy schedules to collaborate their talents and bring you a fun, laid back show, presenting a more intimate side of these funky rock n’ rollers!

Sail GHS Summer Sailing Clinics
Hi Joey,
I’m sure you have seen the kids on the Sail GHS Team out in the harbor having a great time racing in all weather throughout the year. During the summer months, they are offering Summer Sailing Clinics in their
new, C 420 sailboats and even in their newly acquired Laser! Level II Sailing Coach, Guy Fiero is at the helm and with assistance from his very, dedicated team of volunteers. This is the biggest bargain for sailing on Cape Ann at ONLY $85 per week, Monday through Friday 8 – 11:30am. Five days a week and still time in the afternoon to hit the beach! Kids with some sailing experience ages 10 and up are welcome. Classes meet at Gloucester Maritime Heritage Center and there is no need to pre-register! Just bring yourself, your friends, and your life jackets if you have them. Sailors should arrive promptly at 8:00 am as space is limited. Discounts available.
All proceeds from this ongoing fundraiser go to Sail GHS, a non-profit organization to help defray operating costs and provide the youth of Cape Ann and beyond with this wonderful sailing opportunity!

Garden Talk: Market-goers will enjoy having master gardener Mary White, owner of White Gardens of Rockport and a long-time organic gardener, on hand to answer questions and engage in a discussion on gardening.
