The bright library is in the space memorably outfitted by Rob Newton’s Cape Ann Community Cinema (now in Rockport). His investments into upgrades and renovations –concession stand, lobby, viewing room (staff and Wellspring meeting uses), handicap accessible bathrooms, and more– are well suited for the retrofitted library zones. Stairs/elevator to 2nd floor. Ground Floor is Mystery Train. Note: The elevator is to the right when you walk in the entry. (65 Rogers/21 Main –the only entrance is on Main)

Reminder! Three amazing authors coming to Gloucester

Rae Francoeur shares portraits of the authors and writes:

This Sunday event Bestseller to Big Screen is an actual extravaganza!

Sunday  is the day that authors Andre Dubus III, Stephen McCauley and Rodman Philbrick will be here on Cape Ann — together!! Talking about books many of us have read and loved. And that were made into movies. Please join us. It’s free of charge. El Cinco de Mayo! 1 p.m. Cape Ann Cinema & Stage. This will be a rare treat. Getting even one of these esteemed and favorite authors to come would be considered really special. All three awesome storytellers in one place at one time is going to be amazing. We will show old trailers of their movies and there will be books for sale and a chance to meet the authors and get your books signed. Really. You shouldn’t miss this!! What it’s like as the crowd fills in on Gloucester’s FREE Wednesday night movies — before the start of last week’s Moana, 8pm

IMG_20170719_200541

in case you missed the Gloucester Daily Times “TALK OF THE TIMES”

Outdoor movie nights

Gloucester’s waterfront I-4, C-2 property — still used primarily as a downtown parking lot — returned to its added summer role as an outdoor movie venue this week, when hundreds of parents and children flocked to a free showing of Disney’s 2016 film “Moana” to open the fourth annual HarborWalk Summer Cinema series.

The free Wednesday night movies, a cooperative effort between the city and Rob Newton’s Cape Ann Cinema and Stage, begin at dusk, and will run through Aug. 23 when the original “Jaws,” released in 1975, will be shown. “Jaws” was to open the series on July 12, but the showing was postponed because of rain and thunderstorm warnings.

Christopher Sicuranza, the city’s director of constituent services, said the series continues to gain in popularity.

“It just seems to keep growing year after year,” he said, “and we’re getting more and more calls from outside the city, too. As much as people can watch these films on their iPads or at home, there’s nothing like getting out for these at such a community event — and that’s what these have become.”

Sicuranza, an admitted and unabashed “Star Wars geek,” said he’s especially looking forward to next week’s showing of 2016’s “Rogue One.”

The rest of the schedule calls for the “Lego Batman Movie” on Aug. 2, “The Princess Bride” on Aug. 9, and “Sing!” on Aug. 16.

Downtown rooftop cinema by Gloucester’s 400th and John Sayles

Scenes from 2nd special John Sayles Presents event at Cape Ann Community Cinema which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. The Cinema has added a second screening room opening next week and an organ for monthly silent movie screenings with live accompaniment.

Last night’s feature Go For Sisters was written and directed by esteemed American filmmaker John Sayles. He introduced the movie and took questions after the screening. Its powerful cast featured Edward James Olmos, aka Eddie. I didn’t know Sayles was a novelist.

Save the date and thanks Sawyer Free and Cape Ann Cinema & Stage for bringing Screenagers: Growing Up in the Digital Age to Gloucester

October 20th, 7:30PM at Cape Ann Cinema & Stage

This nighttime screening is a great chance to review and determine if it’s a good fit for an enrichment daytime screening at O’Maley. Andrew Sullivan’s New York Magazine article, Technology Almost Killed Me, includes “the first one to use the phone pays for lunch” strategy that I first saw in the trailer for this Screenagers documentary. I enjoyed the illustrations for the article–cell phone riffs into famous paintings–and am thankful I read it if only because it reminded me that I still haven’t seen Screenagers. Now I can!

Gloucester: Dancing in the street Aug 13 and

Dancers from American Travelling Morrice perform twice August 13th- once at St. Peter’s (2:30pm) and later Harbor Loop (6:15pm). They’re on their 41st tour which you’ll read on as you wander; this poster I snapped was displayed at Jalapenos. I wonder who created the woodcut? I also wondered if multi-talented Rose Sheehan, Cape Ann Contra Dance, was involved. Yes. And her son Colin de la Barre (another name befitting a pursuit!)  Gloucester Daily Times has the story.

You might fill your Aug. 13th  dance card. Whether audience or participant, one could make it a daylong celebration of beauty, sport and nature. Not 41 years, but pretty darn close, the Celebrate the Clean Harbor Swimis 38 years young and scheduled earlier that morning. Reminds me: check the GMG calendar for options. Every weekend in Gloucester is like First Night. A few of the other special events planned for August 13: Cape Ann Museum has a walking tour and White Ellery contemporary installation. Cape Ann Community Cinema features two films. Gloucester Stage has a live theater show for kids in the morning and 2 shows for Songs For A New World (one is pay what you wish).

20160804_172207

I bet you can reel off  a few of the chart topping rock groups circa late 1970s.  Who knew that there was a 1979 American folk dance held in St. Ann’s parish hall? The dances were started by Patricia and Norris Marston who hoped to build interest for regular square dances in Gloucester and perhaps raise funds to hire bands. One night Roger Whynott was a featured caller. On another evening it was Charlie Webster calling out folk, square and contra. – Gloucester Daily Times

Psst! It’s possible to dine outdoors at Blue Collar Lobster and then move over to I4C2 for the HarborWalk Summer Cinema. Star Wars Force Awakens tonight!

What seat should you pick at the HarborWalk Summer Cinema? Don’t worry–you’ll find a spot even though people stream into I4 C2 as early as 5:30PM to square away their seating, often novel. A family with an inflatable pool is a regular sight. Blankets are thrown down pell-mell. Kids zig zag a sea of boundaries as they might a sandy beach, which means your stuff is stepped on. It’s all good! There’s a happy community picnic vibe. Soon after 6PM Aurelia Nelson from North Shore Radio 104.9 hosts pre-screening festivities. Rob Newton, Cape Ann Community Cinema, presides; the movie line ups he’s selected have been big hits.

Gloucester = food.

Our family takes a break from cooking and buys dinner from the vendors and/or take out from a downtown business. Once house guests treated us to a lobster dinner AND movie al fresco at Blue Collar Lobster, Gloucester House. It can be done. Has anyone tried it with Topside Grill?

OPEN DOOR at Gloucester HarborWalk 2016 Summer Cinema, with pre movie family activities and canned food drive. Finding Nemo sponsor

Thanks Rob, Cape Ann Community Cinema & Stage, for the community movie nights and for taking these photos. I didn’t bring my camera and was too busy eating even if I had!  What did we carry in and carry home?  On the way to the movies, we walked over to purchase delicious take-out subs from Leonardos for a picnic, and bug spray (not needed it turned out) and sundries from Walgreens. From the vendors at the outdoor movies we picked out candy, Kettlecorn and slush. We didn’t have the fried dough but there’s always next week!

Finding Nemo was the second movie of five FREE outdoor movies hosted by the City of Gloucester HarborWalk through the Cape Ann Community Cinema. Aurelia from North Shore 104.9 and Open Door hosted the festive pre-screening gathering.

The three premier sponsors for the HarborWalk Summer Cinema are North Shore 104.9, Cape Ann Savings Bank, and North Shore Community College. Finding Nemo was presented by Open Door. Next week’s Minions will be shown thanks to Toodeloos!
