Literary Cape Ann presented  a terrific afternoon, Bestseller to Big Screen, featuring Rodman Philbrick, Andre Dubus III, and Stephen McCauley at Cape Ann Cinema 21 Main Street in Gloucester May 5, 2019.

The Toad Hall wheels behind Literary Cape Ann invited Beth Pocock, Asst. Director Sawyer Free Library, to moderate the first half of the program. Literary Cape Ann co-founder Rae Francoeur directed the second part.  The Book Store of Gloucester set up shop to handle book sales. Cape Ann Cinema had trailers queued up and fresh popcorn pop pop popping which was offbeat and endearing. All went off without a hitch thanks to great questions, event coordination/collaboration and three dynamite authors who were  frank, engaging, witty and bright. Make sure to look for the next Literary Cape Ann event.

Another unforgettable Cape Ann Cinema & UU Gloucester Meetinghouse collaboration was held on Sunday, December 3, 2017–a special screening of the silent film adaptation of J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan as a benefit for Pathways for Children. Ellen Sibley was there for Pathways, welcoming guests and opening the evening.

Renowned organist Peter Krasinski explained that star Lindsay Crouse would use her artistry to accompany this silent screening like a Benshi, a Japanese word for performers who provided live narration for silent films in order to translate the intertitles. Though Krasinski has collaborated with benshi in Japan for some of his live performances, yesterday’s event was the first time he’s done so in the United States. I went to film school and was fortunate to take master classes in cinema studies with Bill Everson, a film historian and major collector. He’d invite Lillian Gish and other silent screen stars and producers to lecture, and always there were amazing accompanists. Not once though have I experienced a narration, too. I’ve heard Krasinski play before and seen Crouse act in film, tv and Gloucester Stage. I didn’t know what to expect, but I knew it would be like nothing else I’d ever experienced.  Krasinski has seen Peter Pan numerous times and his confident music was subtle and charming, cueing the music to the action on the screen and improvising along with Crouse. Crouse’s narration was pitch perfect. Crouse spoke of her affection for the story and related seeing it 17 times as a child (yes, with Mary Martin) and how it’s among the defining and formative theatrical pulls of her youth.Who knew Nana’s whimpering and such subtle variations of so many characters crying throughout Peter Pan was possible? Gloucester’s waterfront I-4, C-2 property — still used primarily as a downtown parking lot — returned to its added summer role as an outdoor movie venue this week, when hundreds of parents and children flocked to a free showing of Disney’s 2016 film “Moana” to open the fourth annual HarborWalk Summer Cinema series.

The free Wednesday night movies, a cooperative effort between the city and Rob Newton’s Cape Ann Cinema and Stage, begin at dusk, and will run through Aug. 23 when the original “Jaws,” released in 1975, will be shown. “Jaws” was to open the series on July 12, but the showing was postponed because of rain and thunderstorm warnings.

Christopher Sicuranza, the city’s director of constituent services, said the series continues to gain in popularity.

“It just seems to keep growing year after year,” he said, “and we’re getting more and more calls from outside the city, too. As much as people can watch these films on their iPads or at home, there’s nothing like getting out for these at such a community event — and that’s what these have become.”

Sicuranza, an admitted and unabashed “Star Wars geek,” said he’s especially looking forward to next week’s showing of 2016’s “Rogue One.”

The rest of the schedule calls for the “Lego Batman Movie” on Aug. 2, “The Princess Bride” on Aug. 9, and “Sing!” on Aug. 16.

Scenes from 2nd special John Sayles Presents event at Cape Ann Community Cinema which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. The Cinema has added a second screening room opening next week and an organ for monthly silent movie screenings with live accompaniment.

Last night’s feature Go For Sisters was written and directed by esteemed American filmmaker John Sayles. He introduced the movie and took questions after the screening. Its powerful cast featured Edward James Olmos, aka Eddie. I didn’t know Sayles was a novelist.

What seat should you pick at the HarborWalk Summer Cinema? Don’t worry–you’ll find a spot even though people stream into I4 C2 as early as 5:30PM to square away their seating, often novel. A family with an inflatable pool is a regular sight. Blankets are thrown down pell-mell. Kids zig zag a sea of boundaries as they might a sandy beach, which means your stuff is stepped on. It’s all good! There’s a happy community picnic vibe. Soon after 6PM Aurelia Nelson from North Shore Radio 104.9 hosts pre-screening festivities. Rob Newton, Cape Ann Community Cinema, presides; the movie line ups he’s selected have been big hits.

Gloucester = food.

Our family takes a break from cooking and buys dinner from the vendors and/or take out from a downtown business. Once house guests treated us to a lobster dinner AND movie al fresco at Blue Collar Lobster, Gloucester House. It can be done. Has anyone tried it with Topside Grill?

What a treat! I wish everyone could have heard the hundreds of happy cries of  “Mine. Mine. Mine.” with each unforgettable Finding Nemo seagull scene. This was real life surround sound right at Gloucester’s harbor, seagulls aloft and searching in the enveloping night.

Thanks Rob, Cape Ann Community Cinema & Stage, for the community movie nights and for taking these photos. I didn’t bring my camera and was too busy eating even if I had!  What did we carry in and carry home?  On the way to the movies, we walked over to purchase delicious take-out subs from Leonardos for a picnic, and bug spray (not needed it turned out) and sundries from Walgreens. From the vendors at the outdoor movies we picked out candy, Kettlecorn and slush. We didn’t have the fried dough but there’s always next week!

Finding Nemo was the second movie of five FREE outdoor movies hosted by the City of Gloucester HarborWalk through the Cape Ann Community Cinema. Aurelia from North Shore 104.9 and Open Door hosted the festive pre-screening gathering.

The three premier sponsors for the HarborWalk Summer Cinema are North Shore 104.9, Cape Ann Savings Bank, and North Shore Community College. Finding Nemo was presented by Open Door. Next week’s Minions will be shown thanks to Toodeloos!

Many children participated in the HarborWalk challenge, and fourteen youth completed all story posts making them official “HarborWalk Explorers”.  In addition to the certificate all the kids received a HarborWalk goodie bag filled with prizes, including a special “Ten Pound Island” Lighthouse Lego designed by Cat Barbagallo. I just wanted to tell you what a joy it was to complete the Gloucester Harbor Walk. My friend, Mary-Clare Dalzell, was born and raised in Gloucester. It was her idea to go to the outdoor movie where we heard about the Harbor Walk. My daughter, Lucy, has autism and Mary-Clare’s son, Lee, was born with some medical issues so we did drive the children around to the markers that were further off the beaten path. I just wanted to share with you some of our experiences.
We started off our search up at Stage Fort Park. We parked in the 20 minute parking area asked in the visitor center if they knew where the marker was. They either really didn’t know or did an amazing job at making us believe they didn’t know – either way they didn’t tell us where the marker was. We left the visitor center and roamed around a bit, looking near Tablet Rock and down by the water, but we were unsuccessful. As we returned to the visitor center Lee noticed the pillar, right at the end of the visitor center’s drive. Two of the children were instantly exuberant as they each made their rubbings and we happily returned to the car, followed by a police officer. Apparently, we were close to the 20 minute time limit and were really, really close to getting a ticket. The officer was very nice and probably got a chuckle out of our antics and, most importantly, we didn’t get a ticket.
We moved on to the markers down the road where, I must say, we found lots of parking. Some of it was only 15 minute parking but that was enough for our clown car adventure of having the children and parents jump out of a minivan, run down to a marker, make the rubbing – try to make the children read a bit about the marker – and jump back into the car for the next marker. Whilst on the walk Mary-Clare found a photo of her Grandfather and Lee took a selfie with the photo. Lucy found a boat named Lucy and took a photo with it. Lola took time to stop and smell the flowers at the memorial garden.
The best part for the children was when they found the markers all together along Rogers St. Each child (yes, even the two 12-year-olds) delighted in running to be the first to claim a rubbing. From this Harbor Walk my children and I saw parts of Gloucester we had never seen before and I found out where to park – which is almost everywhere. Lucy, Lola (my other daughter), and Lee had a grand time. Mary-Clare and I probably had more fun than the kids, by the end of the day they were a little cranky since our mission was to complete the Harbor Walk in one day, which we did. I homeschool my girls. We are studying Medieval History this year, and I already told them we will revisit Hammond Castle and the Joan of Arc statue when we reach that point in our curriculum.
As Mayor you probably receive a lot of complaints. I just wanted to make sure you knew how much fun we had. It was fabulous that our children were able to meet you last night and all the children were ecstatic with their prize bags. Lucy has already announced that she will be displaying the Ten Pound Island Lego lighthouse in her room. Lola can’t wait to show up for the Jaws movie in her Gloucester Harbor Walk t-shirt and hat. Thanks again to the City of Gloucester for creating an adventure that anybody can take part in. Thank your for posing with photos with the children and rewarding them for completing the walk. It was definitely one of the highlights of this summer.
