No, you can’t see every live show on Cape Ann this weekend

We’re here to help you choose. ¬†And we just added a couple more shows. ¬†You can always get the latest live music listings here.

Aren’t you glad you live in such a culturally rich area that you have to make choices?

Is Rockport trying to steal you away from Fiesta?

Generally speaking, I’m not a conspiracy theorist. ¬†But now that we know the N.S.A. is reading our emails and listening to our phone calls, I’ve begun to look at things with a slightly more suspicious eye.

So when I go to the gimmesound live music listings for Cape Ann tomorrow and notice that the first 2 shows are both in Rockport — and both Free, it’s got me wondering, “Just what’s going on here?” ¬†They’ve got David Coffin at Shalin Liu at 1o am. ¬†And they’re not really pushing that show either. ¬†It’s buried on a page featuring a number of community concerts and events. ¬†To look at it you’d think Rockport Music was giving back to the community — being a good citizen.

Brad ByrdBut then I see the Rockport Farmer’s Market¬†has local rock star Brad Byrd performing at 11:30. ¬†Now what’s that all about? ¬†What’s an award-winning indie rock star like Brad Byrd doing at a farmer’s market? ¬†You’re probably gonna say it’s because he’s from Rockport and he likes to give back to the community. ¬†But wait. ¬†Don’t you see a pattern here? ¬†Do see what I’m seeing?

Under the guise of appearing like good citizens, the “good people” of Rockport are really up to no good. ¬†They’re trying to steal the crowds away from Fiesta. ¬†They want you in Rockport early and think they’re gonna keep you all day so you can see Bob Allison on the Grand Piano at the Emerson at 6pm — also free . ¬†Don’t be fooled. ¬†It’s Fiesta. ¬†You live in Gloucester. ¬†Know what I mean?

Where else on Earth can you get this much musical variety on one small island? ¬†Plus it’s Fiesta. ¬†If you can’t have fun on Cape Ann this weekend, it’s time to move to New York City and start cheering for the Yankees!

communities across the North Shore.

The program is comprised of songs that are an invitation to sing and
include music from the Renaissance period to folk songs.  The title of the
concert ‚ÄúMusic Shall Live‚ÄĚ comes from an early German round about music, a

The Honors Youth Choir of Chorus North Shore is an outstanding group of 50
talented young local musicians. They come together to learn the discipline
and joy of shared music–and many go on to study music in college. The
children come from communities all over the North Shore–from Rockport to
Newburyport and Marblehead–and represent the diversity of the area with
children from public and private schools and several who are home schooled.

The Choir’s repertoire includes work by Faure, Brahms, Handel, Mozart,
Britten, and Bernstein. They regularly sing with the Chorus North Shore,
matching the discipline of the 125-voice adult chorus.

The Honors Youth Choir is a fully funded program allowing students aged ten
through high school the opportunity to learn and perform choral masterworks
and present extraordinary concerts. The singers are selected by audition and
must attend scheduled rehearsals and concerts. Chorus North Shore artistic
director, Sonja Dahlgren Pryor and executive director Mary Sepich bring
their experience as lifelong educators and musicians to the planning and
development of this special group.

Defy Terror This Weekend

As I pointed out in this post, non-violent defiance is the best weapon against¬†tyranny. ¬†This weekend we all have a chance to defy the terrorists¬†by going out as planned. ¬†If you haven’t yet made plans, there’s even more going on than we knew about when we¬†posted yesterday. ¬†Tonight alone, you’ve got a choice of 10 shows starting at 6pm. ¬†See the full live music schedule here. ¬†Plus it’s Earth Day Weekend with over 20 Cape Ann events planned and nicely mapped out for you by our boy Joey here.

Whether it’s music, movies, eco-scavenger-hunting, shredding, clean-up, planting … whatever … don’t be shy — defy! ¬†Let Music & Mother Nature cleanse your soul.

Even Yankee fans are showing us love by singing our tune …

The season is on!

36 performers on Cape Ann this weekend — remember, by my definition, the weekend starts on Thursdays. ¬†Tonight we’ve got the Singer/Songwriter Shuffle¬†starting at 7, featuring some of the area’s best, including Inge Berge, whose new children’s album (see this post for more info) was featured in today’s Gloucester Times (see article here).

After the shuffle, you can catch award winning Indie Rocker, Bray Byrd at Dog Bar starting at 9.  Music starts at 7pm tomorrow, 10:30 AM on Saturday and 11:30 AM on Sunday, so plenty of opportunities to get the kids out to listen.  See the full schedule here.

To get you in the weekend mood, here’s a video Brad shot at Minglewood about a year ago of one of my favorite songs from his award-winning album¬†Mental Photograph.

More Brad Byrd videos here.

Sinatra in Rockport?

Michael Dutra

Swing back in time with songs like ‚ÄúMy Way,‚ÄĚ ‚ÄúSummer Wind,‚ÄĚ and ‚ÄĚStrangers in The Night‚ÄĚ with one of the finest Frank Sinatra impressionists in the country, Michael Dutra. Dutra has performed his tribute to ‚ÄėOl Blue Eyes around the world since 2002, taking the stage more than 300 nights per year and stunning audiences with his dead-on renditions of Sinatra classics.

Ok, so you know summer is coming Captain Carlo’s is open. ¬†Great lineup of music this weekend at over 15 different venues from a little bit of ¬†country to rock-n-roll. ¬†See full lineup here.

Cool stuff reminders and a rising star video

Amid the¬†flood of info that washes over us every day, it’s often refreshing to get a reminder of some cool stuff we might have missed. ¬†Here goes:

  • Espressos has jumped into the live music scene. ¬†Check out their lineup.
  • Live music starts at 6 tonight and 11:30 am tomorrow (see schedule here). ¬†Plenty of good shows you can take your kids to all over Cape Ann.
  • Seasonal wine and beer licenses kick in on Monday (April Fools Day — seems fitting somehow). ¬†So The Cave, which is usually closed Mondays is having a wine tasting 4-6pm (more about that here).
  • You can help support Cressy Beach Restoration at the CPA meeting on Tuesday (4/2) 6pm at City Hall First Floor Council Conference Room (more on that here).

Here’s a very good music video by rising star Brendan James. ¬†You can see him at Crowell Chapel tonight with guests Brian Jarvis, Charlee Bianchini & Dave Brown. ¬†Tickets &¬†details here.

Award-winning Folk legend Bob Franke @ Old Sloop Next Saturday

Here’s a homespun video of one of his simple, profound, moving, lyrical songs. ¬†This concert will touch you deeply. ¬†Get Tickets Here.

TICKET UPDATE: Big Band Sold Out, Few left for Chelsea Berry, David Maxwell, Brendan James, Henri Smith & Charles Neville, Livingston Taylor

There are also a few tickets left for two excellent Crowell Chapel shows this week: Chelsea Berry and Dawn Mitchele tomorrow (WED) and Brendan James with Brian Jarvis, Charlee Bianchini & David Brown on Saturday.

First Spring weekend and over 2 dozen live shows on Cape Ann ~ Clickity Clack!

You know the season is upon us when there are 26 live shows over the weekend and most of the summer-only venues aren’t even open yet. ¬†(If you’re a summer business, stop what ever you’re doing, take Paul & RD’s advice and let him know when you open: see here).

And just in case you’ve missed my¬†incessant¬†plugs for taking kids to live music, here we go again … shows start as early as 7pm tonight and tomorrow. ¬†Then on Sunday it’s 8 different start-times in 8 1/2 hours: ¬†11am, 2pm, 3, 5, 5:30, 6, 7 and 7:30. ¬†See the complete weekend live music schedule here.

One of this weekend’s shows features Noise publisher/editor T Max, who’s got a new CD out soon. ¬†And on that CD, is a new song Clickity Clack, which was inspired by a spontaneous burst of creativity from over a year ago, when we filmed his walk through Gloucester’s music scene (see the video series here). ¬†Now he’s turned it into a clever romantic tragedy with an edge (see lyrics and chords here).

Here’s the original¬†spontaneous¬†creative burst from February 2012

Here’s the new version a year later performed by T Max with Bird Mancini

Larry Coryell Power Trio will knock your socks off on Friday

If you saw jazz guitar master Larry Coryell back in November 2010 when he played a benefit for seARTS, you already know what I’m talking about. ¬†At the risk of dating myself (this is Peter, not Vickie) I was mesmerized when I saw him on tour with Gary Burton back in the late sixties/early 70s (I was in high school).

Larry Coryell is a master, plain and simple. ¬†And you’ve got a chance to see him with his Power Trio (Larry Coryell on guitar,¬†Larry Gray on bass &¬†Paul Wertico on drums) this Friday at Shalin Liu (get tickets here). You might think of jazz guitar as beautiful, lyrical and highly¬†improvisational, if¬†a little on the quiet side. ¬†Here’s a video of Larry’s Power Trio showing off Paul Wertico on drums — spectacular! ¬†Anything but quiet.

Here’s what it says on the Rockport Music website:

Known as the pioneer guitarist merging jazz, rock, free-form improvisations, and Eastern influences, Larry Coryell brings his eclectic style back to the Shalin Liu Performance Center this March. Described by critic Whitney Balliett as ‚Äúthe most innovative and original guitarist since Charlie Christian,‚ÄĚ Coryell’s career spans four decades, over 60 albums (dozens more as a sideman), and performances with some of music’s heavy-weights like Eric Clapton, John Scofield, Elvin Jones, and Chick Corea, to name a few. Also a consummate composer, he tells Rockport Music, ‚ÄúI write music because I can’t help it. I think perhaps I want to complement all the great compositions already out there‚ĶWayne Shorter and Sonny Rollins come to mind, and of course, Monk!‚ÄĚ Coryell‚Äôs personal philosophy of music has kept his playing fresh and exciting, and makes each of his personal appearances a special event.

‚Äú‚ĶCoryell played poetically, switching between unhurried, unmetered passages and a subtly swaying backbeat. Before long, however, the guitarist was throwing off fleet runs and venturing far afield harmonically, onceagain swept up in the exuberance of the moment.‚Ä̬†–¬†Chicago Tribune

Gary Backstrom Band with Michael Thomas Doyle on Drums tonight @ Rhumb Line

There’s so much going on tonight (see schedule here)¬†that even if you go out early and stay out late, you won’t be able to catch everything. ¬†I guess you could call that good news for Cape Ann’s music scene. ¬†More good news that Dan King is back in town playing with KBMG tonight at Dog Bar.

It’s also good news is that if you play your cards right, you can get to a lot of shows because they start at 6, 7, 8, 9 and the Gary Backstrom Band at 9:30 at the Rhumb Line.

Dancing to the Gary Backstrom Band would be a perfect way to end an excellent night of music. ¬†Tonight Gary’s got Michael Thomas Doyle on drums. ¬†Hopefully you’ve seen Doyle on guitar with Chelsea Berry (check out¬†this video). ¬†He’s just as good on drums. ¬†See him in the Gary Backstrom Band video below at Harbor Loop last summer.

Oohh, I can’t wait for Harbor Loop concerts to start up again …¬†I once asked Doyle which instrument he likes better. ¬†He replied, “Do you have kids?”
“Which one do you like best?”

Point taken!

Bach, Mozart, Hendrix, Prince & Elvis – all by one virtuoso guitarist on Sunday @ Shalin Liu

Benjamin Verdery does it all. ¬†When Karen Herlitz from Rockport Music sent me the program for Sunday’s concert with Ben Verdery, I said, Really? ¬†Bach & Hendrix in the same concert? ¬†Mozart & Prince? ¬†Elivs? Actually he’ll play Don’t Be Cruel
written by Otis Blackwell, who also wrote Elvis hits All Shook Up & Return to Sender, along with Great Balls of Fire & Breathless for Jerry Lee Lewis. ¬†But it’s¬†Fever, which he co-wrote with Eddie Cooley, that makes Otis Blackwell one of my favorite songwriters. ¬†You can listen to Ella Fitzgerald sing Fever here (my favorite version for a lot of reasons) …¬†But I digress …

How can anybody play such a diverse repertoire in a single concert without losing the audience in a swirl of confusion.  Well, just listen to this:

Now don’t you want to hear what he does with Bach, Mozart, Prince and Otis Blackwell? ¬†Well you can on Sunday in one of the most acoustically perfect places on Earth. ¬†Aren’t you glad you live nearby?¬†There are still good seats left. ¬†Get them here.

Just for fun, here’s Hendrix’s version of the song live in 1970.

Inspired? ¬†Now check out this weekend’s spectacular live music schedule with 35 live shows on Cape Ann starting tonight.

Follow John Rockwell around town tonight

This could be a record: you can see a the same local artist in 3 different venues in one night. ¬†So John Rockwell¬†fans are in for a treat. ¬†And if you’re not already a fan, you don’t know what you’re missing. ¬†It’ll be a nice night, so take this perfect opportunity and go see him.

If you bought an Irish Sweepstakes ticket, you’ll see John singing Irish songs at Gloucester House tonight starting at 5pm.

Then you can bop on over to Alchemy and catch his set with Robert Erinn Brown at 7.

And off you go to Rhumb Line to see him (and Robert) as Fly Amero’s special guest just after 9pm. ¬†If you’re not familiar with John’s full, smooth, robust voice (Vickie says it has sex appeal), check out the video of John with another of our favorite voices, Sarah Slifer, nicely shot by FOB Joanne Silva.

Going out tonight is a perfect way to gear up for a great weekend of music starting tomorrow and to prepare for Friday, when you’re just gonna have to choose from among Cape Ann’s best musicians all playing on the same night. ¬†Check the Friday schedule here and start planning now.

So much music at Shalin Liu this summer, you’d think it was in New York City ~ plus a tip for parents & young music fans
