The Farm Bar & Grille and Good Morning Gloucester together with YMCA Camp Spindrift present the 3rd annual outdoor bikini/speedo dodgeball tournament to benefit Next Step, a charity that provides aid to children and young adults with life threatening illnesses (www.nextstepnet.org)

The event itself will be held at YMCA Camp Spindrift in West Gloucester. They have an ideal facility to accommodate this event as it grows. Parking will be at nearby Wingaersheek Beach and there will be a shuttle between the parking lot and Camp Spindrift.
On Wednesday, March 13th at 7pm there will be a COMPETITOR’S PRE-EVENT MEETING at the Farm Bar & Grille in Essex, MA (233 Western Ave). The purpose of this meeting will be to give the athletes their tshirts and wristbands, as well as go over the rules of play and verify athletes’ age and make sure swimwear is all legal. At least one person from each team should be present. The idea here is to make everything run smoothly on the day of the event.

This is a 21+ event, all participants MUST be 21+. We will play through snow or light rain, but in the event of extreme weather there is a makeup date the next weekend. This is a double elimination team tournament, each team will have 5 players with a minimum of 2 women per team. We will be using basic team dodge ball rules with a few modifications for the outdoors and teams of 5.

All team members MUST compete in bikini or speedo style swimwear (no swim shorts, jean shorts, etc.) or face automatic elimination. Your team’s competition swimwear must be approved at the pre event meeting at the Farm on Weds, March 13th at 7pm. Send at least one member of your team with your swimwear to pick up wristbands, shirts, and go over details for the competition. You can find some good themed uniforms here, don’t wait until the last minute:

Non-competitors: there will be a $5 minimum donation at the gate to watch the day’s events. The Farm will have food and drink available on the Camp Spindrift grounds. Remember, ALL of the profits from this event are going to a GREAT CAUSE!

Square Foot Gardening Training

This year we are offering a limited number of spots to the general public to attend our Backyard Growers Program training. The training program fee is $25. You will be trained alongside this year’s program participants. (Sorry! We can’t provide you will additional Backyard Growers Program resources! The $25 fee is for the 2-hour training only.) To learn more about our program go to the Quick Links above.

The Backyard Growers Program partners with The Food Project to provide an interactive, hands-on training, which is fun, informative, and gives you what you need to successfully start and maintain a garden. You will learn the "square foot gardening method" and how to plan your family’s garden.

Where & When

  • We offer two training dates. Both trainings cover the same material so you only need to sign up for one. 
    • Saturday, March 23 generally for families at Veteran’s, East Gloucester & Plum Cove
    • Saturday, March 30 generally for families at Beeman & West Parish
  • Families that do not fall within these categories can choose which date they would like to attend.
  • The trainings are from 10 AM – 12 PM at The Open Door in the dining room. Please arrive at 9:45 to register. Please use the rear entrance.

What are your duties at your job and do you use twitter as a tool for your job?

I’m editor of the Gloucester Daily Times and Cape Ann magazine. I also handle most of the social media for both publications. The facebook accounts for both publications are linked to Twitter, so I can try and multitask ( I can Ryan saying "No, no, NO" right now.)
But I  retweet stuff I think will be interest to readers — Facebook followers miss out on that.
Also when breaking news happens, I tweet about it first, then post on facebook when I have enough to put together something more substantial.

Why do you think you are follow worthy on Twitter?

By searching for #CapeAnn, #GloucesterMA, #RockportMA, #EssexMA or #ManchesterMA you can find out the news that’s important to you as a resident of these communities. I don’t tweet everything, but if anything is trending on gloucestertimes.com, I usually post it.

What types of tweets or twitter user drive you up a wall?

Spammers who use @GDTnews to get my attention for viagra sales, weight-loss gimmicks, etc.

Who are some of your favorite twitter users?

Thank you Grace for opening your heart and home for the first of many interviews for the Feast of St. Joseph film project. Grace is Sefatia’s sister, the youngest of four. Paint Factory Restoration – Progress on “E” Building

They have come a long way. Removed all the paint pasted to the floors, installed radiate heat in the floors, all new walls inside, carpeting, plumbing, yet maintaining as much of the original wood as possible.

The “E” Building is becoming a love of hard work and dedication.

This will be one of Gloucester’s Pride Land Mark.

Local singer/songwriter Steve Caraway featured on TV this week

Steve Caraway is Allen’s guest on Local Music Seen with Allen Estes this week, with his new show premiering tomorrow (WED) at 6:3o pm on Cape Ann TV Channel 12.

Steve talks about how he got started in the music business and reveals some songwriting secrets during a lively conversation with Allen.  It’s not easy making a living as a musician and Steve will give you some tips on how to do it well.  Plus you’ll get to hear one of Allen’s most popular sad songs and three gems from Steve Caraway.  Here’s one of them:

You can catch both Allen & Steve tonight (TUESDAY).  Allen is at Jalepenos at 7 with Brown, Mattacks & Ginandes, and Steve hosts the open mic at the Dog Bar at 9.

Chorus North Shore’s “Letters from Ireland

Last Saturday I went to “Letters from Ireland”, a concert by Chorus North Shore with counter-tener Thomas Mark Fallon, The Travelers Three Plus One, actress Pauline Miceli, and Trautel Brown on Irish pipes. The Chorus includes many members from Gloucester and Rockport. The music was at beautiful – at times tranquil and other times rousing (with audience participation in some cases)!  Well worth the price of admission.

Education at Savour Wine and Cheese

Dear Joey,

Just a reminder to everyone that wine classes start this week! Throughout March and April, we are offering the 5-part series, Become a Wine Expert, and three 2-part series: Wines of Italy, Wines of Spain, and Wines of France. 

The 5-part series begins this Tuesday, March 5, and the 2-part series on Italian wine begins Thursday, March 7.  We still have a few places in the 5-part course (which is open to anyone, even complete novices).  We also have several places available for the Italian wine class. This is a great opportunity to learn from an expert in a small class.  Questions and discussion are welcomed.  We are only offering the 5-part class once this year, and we may not be able to offer the 2-part classes again.  So don’t miss out on this opportunity.  If you are not sure whether the classes are right for you, just come to the first class to see.  We will do our best to answer your questions and accommodate you.

Kathleen Erickson, “The Wine Ph.D.” and co-owner of Savour Wine and Cheese, will teach the 5-part series, beginning Tuesday, March 5 at 7:30 p.m.   Kathleen has been teaching this hands-on series, based on tasting, for more than 10 years. This is the only time we will offer the series this year, so don’t miss it!

The class will take you through the skills associated with tasting and evaluating wines, from understanding different varietals (like Chardonnay and Pinot Noir) to learning how to accurately describe your personal wine preferences.  We explore the major white and red wines, with a special class that allows you to taste (first-hand) how temperature, decanting, stemware, and vintage affect the taste of your wine.  We even include a section on Quality/Price ratio, where you learn how to get the most bang for your buck in a retail shop or restaurant.  We end the series with a food and wine-pairing class and dinner.

series, you will likely know more than 80% of the people who will take care of you in the average wine shop or restaurant. The series gives you the practical information and knowledge to take charge of your own wine buying with confidence.  It is a great course to take with a spouse, partner, or friend, when you are trying to find “common ground” in wines you will both love.

We will start the first class on Tuesday, March 5 at 7:30 p.m. and finish with a wonderful meal at the Chef’s table on Tuesday, April 2.  The all-inclusive price of $195.00 includes notebook, handouts, all wines, and some great  food.

Sustainable seafood purchases are easier to make, thanks to these two consumer-oriented programs. A must for anyone who cares about our oceans’ renewable resources and wants to know more about sustainable seafood guides.

Join the Gloucester Area Astronomy Club this Friday, March 8th for “An Introduction to Amateur Astronomy”!

We’ll feature presentations on the rewards of the hobby, what the different types of telescopes are, how they work, how to buy one, how much to spend, what to look at, you name it. Everything you need to know to get started, or to up your game. As always, the public is warmly invited, and there are no dues or fees. All presentations are geared toward the general public.
