David Cox vs Sports Illustrated

Catherine Ryan Submits-

Hey, Joey,

GMG photographers serve up passion and inspiration daily, so no surprise Joey recognizes local sports and talent on his blog.

Decisive shots by sports photographers freeze and interpret the best of sports moments: elements of beauty, determination, athleticism, emotion. GMG contributor, David Cox, is one hard-working pro photographer, known for just that. FOBs and residents know his shots of local school sports, crowds, events, nature and people.

image009image010

Both are great photos and deserve high resolution inspection. See the stands in David’s– all the ohs and awes. The second photo is by Damian Strohmeyer on assignment from Sports Illustrated, published in the October 14, 2013 issue, pp 30-31 double page spread. We could do this comparison for the Koji Uehara leap-lift seen round the world, seconds after the Red Sox advanced to the 2013 World Series Game (various angles made it on many “pictures of the year” lists for 2013.) Sports Illustrated, national print media, game on! When Cox has a chance to be in the right seat at the right time, he doesn’t miss.

More David Cox photo examples

Somehow David Cox can shoot a clean background and direct our focus to the main event. Not easy to do. We look exactly where it’s needed, and have the bonus luxury to take our time for any all-over mosaic or atmosphere.

David Cox, Gloucester’s BBB sports + more photographer. When he’s not crouching and climbing around for careful framing and action shots, he’s a fixture downtown as the proprietor of Main Street Arts and Antiques. You can visit there to see his art while browsing an eclectic mix of consignments. If you know David, his pictures and his store suit him.

Dog Bar Wings- Tremendous! and a tip…

My favorite wings in town go to Cape Ann Brewing.  Cape Ann Brewing and The Farm Bar and Grille are my favorites on the North Shore.  Coming in just behind those two with excellent wings of their own is Dog Bar.

The move at Dog Bar is to order them plain and then get the sauce on the side.  This insures totally crispy wings every time.  Nothing worse than soggy fries, second worse is soggy greasy wings.  Dog Bar has the crispy wing thing down to a science.

Check these MFers out-

DELECTABLE!

Seafood Throwdown, Farmers Market, Live Music on Schooners and in the Streets. It’s still Summer folks!

Seafood Throwdown
NAMA’s Niaz Dorry with the Mystery Fish (gray sole) at a July 2010 Seafood Throwdown won by Sugar Mags

Can you feel it?  People trying to pack a whole summer into the last week before school starts, which seems to get earlier every year.  It feels like there’s so much going on that every choice we make effectively says “No” to a dozen other things we’d like to do.  Take today for instance.  Live music starts at 11:30am at Stage Fort Park and continues into the night at restaurants, clubs, @ Shalin Liu, on schooners and in the streets.  See the full live music schedule here.

Just in case that’s not enough for you, there’s also the Farmer’s Market at Stage Fort Park from 3-6:30 and today you can catch NAMA’s only Gloucester-based Seafood Throwdown of the year at 4:30 featuring a showdown between 2012 HarvestFest champs Gloucester’s Willow Rest and 2008 Genoa World Pesto champs Beverly’s Prides Osteria.  Spectators get to taste the food so you really don’t want to miss this one!

See how much fun these Seafood Throwdowns are in this video by Joey from the 2010 epic rematch between Passports & Dog Bar.

A Beautiful Night ~ Start the weekend by walking to live music @ 6 downtown venues

Start at Captain Carlos with Cripple Cove Quartet at 5.  Walk out the door to catch Alek Razdan & A-Train at Harbor Loop at 6:30, followed by Johnny Carwash.  Then you can walk to Rhumb Line to see Punk legend, Wille Loco, with Dave Sag.

Yes, I said walk.  It’s not that far.  If you’re not from Gloucester check out Google’s Walking Directions (still in beta, but they work well).  Here are Google’s directions for the 13 minute walk from Harbor Loop to Rhumbline.  And it’s a nice walk — especially on a night like tonight.

While they’re on break you can walk down to the Dog Bar, Brew Pub and Minglewood.  No cover for any of these shows tonight, so start the weekened NOW!

Trouble deciding where to go?  See the full live music schedule here.

It’s time for Joe Wilkins

JoeWilkins
Joe Wilkins on the Local Music Seen set

OK, if you haven’t heard Joe Wilkins, it’s time.  Don’t let his pleasant, unassuming personality fool you.  This guy is a powerhouse talent, whose songs paint vivid pictures in your head, so you might not notice just how good he is on guitar.  You can see him on Local Music Seen with Allen Estes tomorrow (WED) at 6:30pm on Cape Ann TV Channel 12.  Then bop over to Giuseppe’s and catch him live with Chris Langathianos.

If you miss tomorrow, you can see him with Joe Cardoza on bass and Leo Ciamitaro on drums at Dog Bar for a Fiesta Friday party.  And if you’re in the mood for something more quiet, catch solo him at The Landing on Saturday.  See full live music schedule here.

Listen to this from Local Music Seen:

Watch what happens at 1:16 in this video and you’ll get why he’s a pro.  See more Joe Wilkins videos here.

Come Monday morning, there’s simply no excuse for not knowing who this rising star is.  Before you know it Joe Wilkins will be on tour in Europe or Asia and you’ll have missed your chance to see him in an intimate venue serving good food in your own back yard FOR FREE!

Rising Star Brad Byrd on TV and Live @ Dog Bar this week

Brad Byrd (R) w/ Allen Estes on the set of Local Music Seen

We see one of our roles, here at GMG, as making sure you know who’s on the way to making it big.  Rockport native, Brad Byrd is one of those local musicians.  Some day, when Brad’s playing stadiums and you can’t get a ticket for under 200 bucks, you’ll be saying, “I saw him at the Dog Bar in Gloucester, Mass!”  But only if you get down to the Dog Bar tomorrow (THURSDAY) where he’s on at 9pm.

Tonight you can see Brad on Local Music Seen with Allen Estes, which airs at 6:30 on Cape Ann TV Channel 12.  In this show, Brad’s hypnotic voice draws you into his world where you’ll notice that every one of his lyrics is perfectly placed and there isn’t a single extra word. This is some of the best songwriting you’ll hear.

When this show premiered last June, Allen introduced an excellent new song, “The Trouble with Me”.  Here’s a taste:

Almost exactly a year ago, Brad shot a music video for his hit, Zero to the 101 at Minglewood.  Here’s some behind-the-scenes footage from that video shoot.

More behind-the-scenes footage here.  And more Brad Byrd videos here.

The season is on!

36 performers on Cape Ann this weekend — remember, by my definition, the weekend starts on Thursdays.  Tonight we’ve got the Singer/Songwriter Shuffle starting at 7, featuring some of the area’s best, including Inge Berge, whose new children’s album (see this post for more info) was featured in today’s Gloucester Times (see article here).

After the shuffle, you can catch award winning Indie Rocker, Bray Byrd at Dog Bar starting at 9.  Music starts at 7pm tomorrow, 10:30 AM on Saturday and 11:30 AM on Sunday, so plenty of opportunities to get the kids out to listen.  See the full schedule here.

To get you in the weekend mood, here’s a video Brad shot at Minglewood about a year ago of one of my favorite songs from his award-winning album Mental Photograph.

More Brad Byrd videos here.

Music helps us heal this week

More than likely you know someone who was at the Marathon.  Here’s a small-world example: Vickie’s brother-in-law works for a medical device company in Cedar Falls, Iowa and his boss is the father of the eight-year-old boy who died.  Even if you don’t know someone who was there, you’re probably reeling from the shock that terrorism has struck so close to home.  I know I am.

Music has a way of healing wounds of all kinds.  And musicians have known this since humans began making music (when ever that was).

I was Speaking with T Max today about this and he gave me a quote perfect for this week from Leonard Bernstein, one of my musical heroes — I watched his Young People’s Concerts on TV as a kid (see them on YouTube here).   He says,

“This will be our reply to violence:
to make music more intensely,
more beautifully,
more devotedly than ever before.”

Maestro Bernstein’s healing words ring true as local musicians carry his reply to over a dozen venues in Gloucester and Cape Ann this week.  See the complete live music schedule here.

Tonight T Max is Fly Amero’s guest at The Rhumb Line. (Fly’s on the cover of T Max’s  Noise Magazine this month — read the story here).  Both T Max and Fly are tuned into the power of music to heal (here’s one example of how Fly transformed a dark day).

Tomorrow there’s another Singer/Songwriter Shuffle at Giuseppe’s with top local stars, including Inge Berge, Satch Kerans, Steve Caraway, Will Hunt, Randy Black, Brian O’Connor & Jake Pardee.  And just like last week you will still have time to catch rising star Brad Byrd at The Dog Bar after the Shuffle.  Currently I’m under an intense deadline that is forcing me to work late, but one way or the other, we’ll try to get to at least one local live music show over the next week or so.  And I’m sure it will help us heal.

Here’s a video that may seem a bit idealistic and hippy-dippy-trippy, but I find wisdom appropriate for our time in it’s simple, haunting lyrics especially this stanza:

Nothing you can know that isn’t known.
Nothing you can see that isn’t shown.
Nowhere you can be that isn’t where you’re meant to be.
It’s easy.

Remember Avenging Annie ~ Andy Pratt’s 1973 top 40 hit? You can see him perform it live tomorrow (Thursday)

Only in Gloucester.

Tomorrow (Thursday) the Singer / Songwriter Shuffle at Giuseppe’s features a number of local favorites including Noise Magazine founder T Max, Joe Wilkins and Andy Pratt, who’s hit “Avenging Annie” reached #15 on Boston’s WRKO.  Here’s a video of the original:

After the shuffle, you can shuffle on down to the Dog Bar to see Brad Byrd, another local about to make it big.  Here’s his latest video:

More Brad Byrd videos here.

Local singer/songwriter Steve Caraway featured on TV this week

Steve Caraway is Allen’s guest on Local Music Seen with Allen Estes this week, with his new show premiering tomorrow (WED) at 6:3o pm on Cape Ann TV Channel 12.

Steve talks about how he got started in the music business and reveals some songwriting secrets during a lively conversation with Allen.  It’s not easy making a living as a musician and Steve will give you some tips on how to do it well.  Plus you’ll get to hear one of Allen’s most popular sad songs and three gems from Steve Caraway.  Here’s one of them:

You can catch both Allen & Steve tonight (TUESDAY).  Allen is at Jalepenos at 7 with Brown, Mattacks & Ginandes, and Steve hosts the open mic at the Dog Bar at 9.

It’s an excellent week to see lots of live shows with start times from 6 to 9.  Plus Seaport Grille has music all mid-week as part of their 4th Anniversary Celebration.  Check the complete live music schedule here.
