Bouzouki ~ Irish or Greek?

Answer: Both.  The Irish adapted it from the Greeks and flattened the back.  Steve Levy plays the Irish Bouzouki in this video of  gimmesound Artist of the Week Michael O’Leary & Friends shot last Saturday at the Community House of Hamilton & Wenham.

You can see the same band at the First Parish Church of Newbury tomorrow.  Tickets are $12 today, $15 at the door, tomorrow.

Affection Notes and Love Life Advice.

They will remain anonymous so just sign your questions or personals with something suggestive of your item.

I will give honest answers and advice from my perspective. You may not agree with my advice but it will be straight from the hip.

As far as an affection note, perhaps you ran into someone at a local coffee shop, felt some type of connection, but didn’t pull the trigger.

You can write in something like this-
“to the hottie in the burberry scarf at the Lone Gull who spilled coffee on me, I think you’re elegant and I’d love to stir your java. If you feel the same perhaps we could get together and you could spill some more”

You could also send in a note thanking someone for a random act of kindness.

They will remain anonymous.

“Here’s the story: About 13 miles from this spindle of rock, there’s a bigger island, called Lord Howe Island.

On Lord Howe, there used to be an insect, famous for being big. It’s a stick insect, a critter that masquerades as a piece of wood, and the Lord Howe Island version was so large — as big as a human hand — that the Europeans labeled it a “tree lobster” because of its size and hard, lobsterlike exoskeleton. It was 12 centimeters long and the heaviest flightless stick insect in the world. Local fishermen used to put them on fishing hooks and use them as bait.” click here for the rest of the story

Lessons for Children- The Squished Frog

While on vacation we took a walk with the girls and came across this squished frog which I think got run over by a golf cart as it was on the golf cart path.

A little later in the day the Bean hops out of the rented minivan and proceeds to walk across the pavement to get across the road to which I raised my voice and grabbed her by the arm before she got more than a step.

Reminding her yet again about looking both ways and waiting for me before she crosses I asked her to look me in the eyes.

Then I told her to remember the squished frog we saw earlier in the day and how I’d hate for her to get run over by a car and her get squished and how dead stuff is dead forever and how it would really make me sad to never be able to talk to her again.

Maybe it might have left a little impression on her.

In the mean time I’ll just keep reminding her to stick by my side while I help Snoop Maddie Mad out of her car seat.

A FAMILY OF ARTISTS: THE GRUPPÉ FAMILY

During the 19th and 20th centuries, the Gruppé family contributed to the New England art scene by producing many artists including: Charles Paul Gruppé (1860-1940), his son Karl (1893-1982), his son Emile (1896-1978), his daughter Virginia (1907-1980) and his grandson Robert (b.1928). This exhibition will look at their colorful careers and how they influenced each other as artists.

Dear Joey:
    As you might know I have been dealing with Lymphoma , and other cancers. My lymphoma I am told cannot be cured , but the others can. I am diability retired, and I do drive for Gloucester Taxi & Livery on a on call basis. To try and raise money to help defray increasing costs in my battle I have put together a book of my writings called ‘ Etchings from my Heart & Soul ‘ I went to Seaside Graphics and they put it all together for me . Dean of George’s fame has given me permission to sell my books at his place. I have to get $20.00 each , because there is not much profit . I am also giving away a framed copy of my writings. So Joey it has not been easy , but this is my only source. I thank you for reading my request and hope that Good Morning Gloucester will pass it on. As you know my writings are inCapeannsalon.com  and petertoddpoet.co, or people can just google my name.
    I was born in Gloucester on January 10th,1943. I was born in my grandmothers spare room about 100 feet away from the railroad tracks at the Cedar St. crossing.

NeedyMeds at the Gloucester City Council

Gloucester, MA (3/13/12) – In the past 2½ years, residents of Gloucester have saved nearly $350,000 on prescription costs with the Gloucester Fund NeedyMeds Drug Discount Card. The partnership between these two groups has also earned the City of Gloucester nearly $3,000 for use in city-wide health-related projects.

At the March 13th meeting of the Gloucester City Council, Rich Sagall, MD, President of NeedyMeds, updated the councilors on the use of the Gloucester-specific card. The card, which is free and distributed at many sites throughout the city, has been used to save on nearly 12,000 prescriptions. The average savings per prescription is close to $30.00.

Nationally, the NeedyMeds Drug Discount Card saved users over $1 million in December and another $1 million in January. In total, the card has saved users over $15 million in three years.

The free card can be used by anyone, as there are no age, income, insurance or residency restrictions. People with insurance or on state or federal programs can use the card if their drugs are not covered or if they have poor medication coverage. The card offers a discount of up to 80% off the cash price of prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications and medical supplies if written as a prescription, and pet prescription drugs purchased at a pharmacy. The average savings is about 50%.

The drug discount card is accepted at all the pharmacies on Cape Ann and over 62,000 pharmacies nationwide. There is no registration process and all use is anonymous. Unlike many other cards, no user-identifiable information is gathered, offering a high level of privacy protection.

In addition to Gloucester, NeedyMeds is working with Lowell, Chelmsford, Dracut and other municipalities on the North Shore of Boston. NeedyMeds has partnership programs with over 200 local, regional and national organizations.

“Daily we hear from card users who tell us by using the card they can afford medicines they otherwise couldn’t afford,” says Rich Sagall, MD, president of NeedyMeds. He goes on, “It’s very gratifying to see how we are helping so many people who might have had to go without their medications.”

As a non-profit, NeedyMeds keeps costs down and passes the savings on to the card users. Many pharmacists have reported that the NeedyMeds Drug Discount Card offers the best discount of any drug discount card.

Just returned from the cooking demonstration at Cape Ann Olive Oil Company. Two chefs from What’s Cooking, Brian Rice and Christian Collins, made two appetizers, two entree’s, and used tasty CAOO olive oils and balsamic vinegars as ingredients. Loved it. If they do this again – anywhere – you gotta go!

A flock of my favorite early spring arrivals descended on Annisquam today with their wonderful call.  I didn’t see them, hence no photo, but the call they make is distinctly them and goes:  conk-a-reeee, conk-a-reeee!  Who can identify these birds?  You see them along marshes, clinging to cattails and reeds.

In this video, gimmesound artist of the week Michael O’Leary sings one of Joe Garland’s favorite songs with Janice Fullman .  This was part of the special tribute to Joe Garland produced by Local Music Seen with Allen Estes that showed on the large screen at the October 1, 2011 ceremony celebrating Joe’s life at I4-C2.  A longer version of this tribute special is in the works and will air on Cape Ann TV once it’s finished.

Michael O’Leary is also featured in today’s Gloucester Daily Times story (see here).
