Ann Straccia from Gloucester Ingredient List Makes Mario Batali’s First Video In His Batali Cooks 4 Series

Hi Joey

I hope you’re well and enjoying your summer.  I wanted to reach out to you regarding a new video series we just launch entitled Batali Cooks 4, where we asked fans to send us their top 4 favorite ingredients using the hash #batalicooks4. Mario picked a list and created a custom recipe and video based on those picks. 

In this inaugural video, mario chose a list from Ann Straccia of Gloucester which includes monkfish, artichokes, lemon and kale. Mario then created a custom recipe and video – where he walked viewers through all the steps of the recipe in his signature style – teaching us along the way.

photo This is our eldest grandchild, Priva, who turns 16 today. She is half Mexican and visits with her cousins in Mexico City every July. This year, the family had a belated quinceanera to celebrate her 15th birthday.

Priva lives in Brooklyn, is bi-lingual, an experienced traveller and a budding flutist.

Saturday, August 17th from 3-5:00pm at Aquatro Gallery, 77 Rocky Neck Ave. Gallery 4.  There will be a Japanese paper weaving demo at 4:00, as well as a demonstration on the making of her beautiful eggs.

Artist Liz Mitsuye Horwitz, whose exquisite, three-dimensional paper sculptures in traditional Japanese fan shapes and her magnificent, micro-origami earrings are on display at Aquatro Gallery through Columbus Day in 2013, will be in the gallery Saturday, August 17, 2013 between 3-5 PM for Aquatro’s Meet The Artist Reception in her honor. The artist will be giving the paper-weaving demonstration at 4:00PM that day. The event is free and is open to the public.

Liz Mitsuye Horwitz grew up in Tokyo, Japan surrounded by both the traditional materials and arts of Japan and the contemporary expression of Japanese life and culture in printmaking. Her sculptural work and her more functional origami earrings both use Japanese “washi” paper which is a staple of Japanese life. Mitsuye’s three-dimensional fans seek to reconfigure the static scenes of sumo wrestlers, herons and cranes, geishas
and make them more dramatic. Multi-layered constructions in traditional fan shapes, the illustrations on the washi paper are often completely realized, even though the sculptures are built from many layers of foam and paper, each layer painstakingly created and plotted to keep the scene intact.

Horwitz attended Colby College and is an accomplished musician on the flute
and double-bass in both classical and jazz idioms. She resides in Newton,
MA.

Vining Around the Garden

For readers not yet aware, Vine is a free downloadable app for your cell phone. Vine allows you to make six-second continuously looping videos, which you can share instantly to Twitter, FB, and Vine. I like Vine because it is so immediate, uncomplicated, and fun to use. Some people I follow on Vine are John McElhenny; his Vines are always interesting scenes taken in and around Gloucester, and also Amanda Mohan and Macklemore because their Vines are often super funny.

Start at Captain Carlos with Cripple Cove Quartet at 5.  Walk out the door to catch Alek Razdan & A-Train at Harbor Loop at 6:30, followed by Johnny Carwash.  Then you can walk to Rhumb Line to see Punk legend, Wille Loco, with Dave Sag.

Yes, I said walk.  It’s not that far.  If you’re not from Gloucester check out Google’s Walking Directions (still in beta, but they work well).  Here are Google’s directions for the 13 minute walk from Harbor Loop to Rhumbline.  And it’s a nice walk — especially on a night like tonight.

While they’re on break you can walk down to the Dog Bar, Brew Pub and Minglewood.  No cover for any of these shows tonight, so start the weekened NOW!

Dueling Divas (…and a Dandy!) Cabaret One Week Only at Gloucester Stage

Kathy St. George and Kerry Dowling – 2 of the region’s most accomplished performers- will banter, bellow and bewilder in this special cabaret featuring songs from the Great American Songbook. Daniel Robert Sullivan, from the National Tour of Jersey Boys “officiates” this affectionate battle for center-stage. Song selection includes There’s Nothing Like A Dame, What You Don’t Know About Women and a medley of Broadway love songs from across the ages among many other songs. Dueling Divas (…and a Dandy!) Cabaret is a special one-week engagement for six performances only.

The performance schedule for Dueling Divas Cabaret is Wednesday, August 28 through Saturday, August 31 at 8 pm; a Saturday matinee on August 31 at 3 pm and a Sunday performances are September 1 at 4 pm. Honors Youth ChoirOver the years, Chorus North Shore has worked with local area schools to promote choral singing by inviting students to sing with us for credit, and by offering scholarships for graduating seniors who plan to further their interest in music. But, our strategic plan required a more focused approach toward educational outreach.

As a community arts organization, we are particularly sensitive to the cutbacks in funding and support that have steadily eroded the music programs in schools throughout the North Shore. The Honors Youth Choir of Chorus North Shore is a fully funded program allowing children aged 10 through high school the opportunity to learn and perform choral masterworks along with Chorus North Shore, and present extraordinary concerts on their own.

By establishing The Honors Youth Choir of Chorus North Shore, we are able to accomplish several goals for Chorus North Shore:

  • provide an avenue for young singers to learn basic vocal techniques and ear training
  • introduce young singers to a life-long love of choral music
  • offer an opportunity for a children’s choir to work with a premier adult chorus and orchestra
  • reach out to a new audience in the communities we serve

The Honors Youth Choir is selected by audition. The students range from ages 10 through high school, and must attend scheduled rehearsals and concerts. The Chorus North Shore artistic director, Sonja Dahlgren Pryor and associate conductor, Mary Sepich bring their experience as life long educators and musicians to the planning and development of this special group.

Blazing his saddles will be that cosmic gas-giant, Mr. Billy Loosigian , who’s been in more fabulous Boston Bands than you can imagine. Presently in Willie’s band, this guy plays like he has four hands and 24 fingers.
Rounding out the heavy lifting will be our favorite tonsorially-challenged drumambulist, Mr. Steevie Chaggaris ,keeper of the flame and general mucky muck. A great nite! We hit at 8:30  and play till exhaustion. Somebody help me!

Urgent: Special Needs Dog needs Forever Home

This little bundle of wiggles was found wondering the streets of Boxford. The kennel staff in the pound were quickly drawn to her happy nature. She weighs in at 39 pounds and is around 1-2 years old. She needs a special owner. She is frightened of new people. She does warm up nicely once she gets to know them but she is not good with strangers. She has been in intensive training for 2 months accessing her needs. She knows all her commands and is extremely bright. Willow’s options for adoption are limited. She needs an experienced handler and a structured environment- calm and quiet. No wild parties for this girl. She is happy simply spending time with her people and doggie friends. And she thrives on affection. She needs an adult loving home that will be patient and keep up her training. Her ideal home would have another dog and fenced-in yard where they could play together. If you are an experienced dog handler that enjoys a quiet environment and could fulfill a need to help a dog with limited options please consider Willow. She loves walks, cuddles, car rides and playing with other dogs. Willow spends her time between the kennel and her foster Mom in Gloucester. She has wonderful eye contact and seems to have lots to say when she looks at you. Willow is trying to find her place and wants nothing more than a human companion who will spend time with her showing her a safe, quiet new life in this world. She is waiting patiently for that special someone. For that she will give you undivided love, affection and tons of smiles

This is a dog that needs a very special owner.  She is a fabulous dog. All the attributes you would hope to have in your animal companion. Loyal, fun-loving, mild temperament, loves dogs, smart as a whip, cute as a button, loves car rides, housetrained, crate trained, requires little exercise, affectionate…

So why does she need a Special owner?  She is afraid of new people. Once she warms up to them she is their friend for life. But she needs someone who will keep her safe and someone who enjoys a quiet lifestyle preferably with another dog and a fenced in yard.  

PLEASE, Willow has been in shelters and rescues for nearly a year now. She so needs someplace to relax and decompress from the stress of it all.

Adventure Sails

Hi Joey,

The Adventure has had a very exciting couple of weeks.   The Amistad sailed to Gloucester the weekend of August 2, 2013, to assist the Adventure with her rigging and sail installation.

They were amazing.  Unfortunately, prior commitments caused them to leave before the Adventure could have her first trial sail.  

Ryan Graham, who was directing the efforts in this stage, pulled together an amazingly experienced crew (in only 4 days) to ensure the Adventures first sail trial went smoothly.

With 32 crew aboard, the Adventure left the pier at the Gloucester Marine Railway about 10:20 on Saturday morning, August 8, 2013.  Captain Greg was at the helm with Ryan as his

mate.  The crew brought up the sails when the Adventure was in the outer harbor, and the Adventure was sailing for the first time in 20 years.  What a magnificent accomplishment!

Congratulations to the Adventure, the City of Gloucester, and to all of Adventure’s supporters who never gave up the belief that she would sail again!

My girlfriend Stephanie created a company called Coastal Dog Apparel. They make anti-chafe swim suits for boys and men. She is Founder, CEO, Admin, Mailroom clerk, Shipping Dept. manager and does it all. I help a little bit but mostly I keep her laughing as she  launches this company.

We have entered Coastal Dog into a small business contest which, if we win, gets Coastal Dog highlighted in a Super Bowl commercial! Hah!  Can you imagine? The FIRST ever Super Bowl commercial with MEN in bathing suits!

Cape Ann Ceramics Festival update

Cape Ann Ceramics Festival and Beauty in Use show organizers and curators Jenny Rangan, Seyrel Williams and Susan Hershey accept tributes from Cape Ann ceramic artists Jill Solomon, Cynthia Curtis and Anni Melancon. The opening was a huge success and attended by more than 200 people.

The Cape Ann Ceramics Festival got off to a hugely successful start with a workshop by world-renowned potter Randy Johnston, attended by over 40 people, at Cynthia Curtis Pottery in Rockport. Johnston, who is from Wisconsin, is a master potter and was generous in sharing his techniques and methodology with rapt participants from as far away as Connecticut, Maine and New Hampshire. Johnston appears at the festival courtesy of the Pucker Gallery on Newbury Street where he has a solo show coming up in November. His wife, jan McKeachie Johnston appears courtesy of Lacoste Gallery in Concord.
The opening of the Beauty in Use Show at the Cultural Center at Rocky Neck on Sunday was also a smash hit with over 200 people attending. This weekend ceramic lovers have the opportunity to visit Cape Ann ceramic artists’ studios on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 17, and 18, from 10 – 5 pm. Here is a chance to see what goes into the process of making, glazing and firing a piece of pottery. The final event of the festival takes place the weekend of Aug. 23, 24, 25, when an exclusively local show of ceramic art opens on the mezzanine level of the Cultural Center at Rocky Neck, 6 Wonson St., Gloucester. This is a showcase for local artists whose work is emerging. Free mini bowls made by local artists will be given out to the first people to come to the grand opening which takes place on Friday, Aug. 23, from 5 – 9 pm. The show runs all weekend and hours are 10 – 5 each day.

The newest addition to Arcadia Publishing’s popular Images of America series is Lighthouses and Lifesaving Stations on Cape Ann by local author Paul St. Germain. The book boasts more than 200 historic images.

Paul St. Germain, president of the Thacher Island Association, has been a Rockport resident for 18 years and has a view of both Thacher and Straitsmouth Islands from his home. With assistance from the Cape Ann Museum, the Sandy Bay Historical Society archives, US Coast Guard historian, and other private collections, he has put together a most revealing record and a fascinating history through vintage photographs of the lighthouses and lifesaving stations around Cape Ann.

The maritime history of Cape Ann, on the northern coast of Massachusetts, is filled with stories of heroism, adventure and human endeavor.

Annual Rotary Pancake Breakfast on August 17, 2013

This is the 35th year for the event which will be held on Saturday, August 17 at the Bandstand of Stage Fort Park from 7:30 to 11:00 a.m. (in conjunction with the Waterfront Festival) – Parking is free during breakfast if you have a ticket and tickets are $7.00 per person.

Howard has been the Co-chairperson of this event for 25 of the 35 years it has been held.  This will be his last year as Co-chairperson.

Any shout out you can offer is great advertising for the Rotary Club of Gloucester and all proceeds will benefit The Rose Baker Senior Center and Northshore Health Project.

Honors Youth Choir

Auditions for Honors Youth Choir will be held on:

Thursday, September 12th at the Rockport Baptist Church – 4:00 PM

and

Thursday, September 19th at Ascension Memorial Church – Ipswich – 3:30 PM

followed by the first rehearsal.

Honors Youth Choir is sponsored by Chorus North Shore. Students pay no tuition.

Ages are: 10 thru high school.

Over the years, Chorus North Shore has worked with local area schools to promote choral singing by inviting students to sing with us for credit, and by offering scholarships for graduating seniors who plan to further their interest in music. But, our strategic plan required a more focused approach toward educational outreach.

As a community arts organization, we are particularly sensitive to the cutbacks in funding and support that have steadily eroded the music programs in schools throughout the North Shore. The Honors Youth Choir of Chorus North Shore is a fully funded program allowing children aged 10 through high school the opportunity to learn and perform choral masterworks along with Chorus North Shore, and present extraordinary concerts on their own.

By establishing The Honors Youth Choir of Chorus North Shore, we are able to accomplish several goals for Chorus North Shore:

  • provide an avenue for young singers to learn basic vocal techniques and ear training
  • introduce young singers to a life-long love of choral music
  • offer an opportunity for a children’s choir to work with a premier adult chorus and orchestra
  • reach out to a new audience in the communities we serve

The Honors Youth Choir is selected by audition. The students range from ages 10 through high school, and must attend scheduled rehearsals and concerts. The Chorus North Shore artistic director, Sonja Dahlgren Pryor and associate conductor, Mary Sepich bring their experience as life long educators and musicians to the planning and development of this special group.

Free Concert and Ice Cream at Stage Fort Park on Sunday, August 18th at 7:00 PM

Free Cape Ann Community Band Concert at Stage Fort Park in Gloucester. This annual concert is sponsored by BankGloucester.  This year’s concert theme is “An Old-Fashioned Band Concert in the Park” which will include a patriotic sing-a-long, a tribute to our armed service veterans and a children’s march around the bandstand. During the concert, friends and staff of BankGloucester will be scooping out free Richardson’s Ice Cream and Richie’s Italian Slush. Bring a chair or a blanket and enjoy this free summer concert and delicious ice cream! In the event of rain, the concert will be rescheduled to Wednesday, August 21st.

New Nova for Astronomy Dweebs only

A dude in Japan the other day caught a new nova early. It could get bright and stay around for decades or it could be gone in a few nights but it is a new star in the sky.

Want to see it from Cape Ann? Get your birding binocs and a blanket and lay in the backyard. Better to wait until after midnight so this moon gets down a bit but I just nailed it at 10PM.

1) You have to find the Delphinus constellation. It is the Dolphin. It’s a little kite. If you know where Cygnus is (The Swan pretty much straight up in the sky) Delphinus is below the right wing. Here is a picture with  delphinus the kite on the bottom:nova_2013OK, you got the kite.

2) Go “up” maybe two kite lengths to another much dimmer kite shape with no tail.

3) Right above that there are three pairs of stars kind of in a row heading down left to right. One, two (which has a brighter bottom star), then three, another pair with a brighter bottom star(where I placed the gunsight). Except that bottom star was not there two days ago. Those other stars have been there for thousands of years in that exact same spot but that last one is a nova, or new star. It may be there for a few days. It may get very bright, it may stick around for a decade or just a week. Go look at it. 20×40 birding binocs are fine. Go see a new star that was not there when you were born. (It actually was there for possibly hundreds of years but the light just got to us as a binary star system barfed some of its contents onto its partner.)
