Soul Rebel Project Concert Castle Hill tomorrow & Zach joins in!

Soul Rebel Project will be playing tomorrow at the Thursday Night Picnic Concert at Castle Hill on the Crane Estate. It’s the 21st year for this summer concert series at Cranes, a Trustees property, 290 Argilla Rd, Ipswich, MA. Concerts are 7pm – 9pm and gates open at 5pm for the tailgate picnic part. Tickets are available for sale at the gate only: Members: $20/car; Nonmembers: $30/car; Walk-in, bicycle, & motorcycle: $10.

I’m psyched to hear that Zach Gorrell will be joining in. You may know Zach from his work at Sound Harbor Cape Ann Art Haven or Cape Ann Big Band. They just played Fiesta. He’s awesome! Of course, Gloucester knows Soul Rebel Project, too. And they just played during Fiesta at Minglewood.

The Thursday Night picnic concerts at Harbor Loop in Gloucester are free and held from 6-9pm. Tony Frontiero and John Rockwell & the Headlands are playing Harbor Loop tomorrow.

Reclaimed doors and wood everywhere

are just some of the featured and fitting design details coming into focus at Happy Belly, 3 Duncan Street, Gloucester, MA. The everyday casual restaurant will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. And small craft brew. And coffee. They’re roasting their own beans! What else? The floor’s been raised. A lengthy drink rail and counter stools gives one section a warm and chic soda-shop vibe. Nearby a massive antique metal lathe will be re-purposed into a showstopper pedestal table. The former Alchemy space is in its BEFORE stage as it undergoes a transformation by master builders, P Bevan Builders. They built Maggies Farm and other Serenitee Restaurant Group properties plus the  recent renovation of the former Empire store.

Northshore Magazine: August 2016 issue Best of North Shore includes so much on Gloucester and Cape Ann!

20160815_100527Before we dive into Northshore Magazine’s Fall Favorites September issue, let’s take a moment to acknowledge its Best of North Shore August issue. Although votes did not come in all Cape Ann for categories you thought might be a shoe-in: best beach, bakery, breakfast, burger, clam chowder, farmer’s market, art gallery, art anything (!), museum, or attraction — Gloucester and all of Cape Ann businesses receive a lot of deserved attention! Signing in to vote may be a barrier to entry for some. Still, 150,000+ votes were cast. You can check out what won in many additional categories in the 300pp monster issue.

GMG Exclusive: MOSSE the Band to play at Minglewood Tavern this Saturday

MOSSE Minglewood graphic

By John McElhenny

A hot new band called MOSSE will play at Minglewood Tavern this Saturday night. Andrew Luman, the band’s bass player and front man, lives in downtown Gloucester so Good Morning Gloucester sat down with him for an exclusive interview to get the scoop on the band, his rock star hair and whether he ever met Ric Ocasek from the Cars.

GMG: Thanks for talking with Good Morning Gloucester, Andrew. You and your family live across the street from the Cape Ann Museum in downtown Gloucester. Do you ever have to call the cops because it gets really loud over there? Museum people can be crazy.

Luman: You’d think it would be crazy over there but they are really chill people.

GMG: You play in this cool new band that’s playing at Minglewood Tavern on Saturday night — a band called “Mosse.” Your name sounds like ferns or lichen or something. Where’d you come up with it?

Luman: We went through other names that sounded like fungus but “Fern Notice” and “Shrooms With a View” were already taken. So we went with “Mosse.”

GMG: I’m trying to figure out the pronunciation of the band’s name, “Mosse.” Does it rhyme with “floss” like dental floss or “moose” like the animal with the big antlers? Somebody told me it rhymes with “Donna Ardizzoni.” Is that true?

Luman: Making our name impossible to pronounce was a savvy marketing technique. Not only does it not roll off your tongue, it doesn’t even make its way onto your tongue. (It’s pronounced “MOSS-ee.”)

GMG: Joey C’s favorite bands are the Bee Gees, Whitesnake and Loverboy. Does Mosse cover any of their songs?

Luman: No.

GMG: I’ve seen Mosse play out a couple times in Gloucester and you sound really good. When you play, I’ve noticed you do this rock star thing where you put your hair in a little pony tail that looks kinda ninja but also like the nub tail that’s left on a Doberman’s ass. Which look are you going for?

Luman: Definitely the ninja one.

GMG: What kind of music does Mosse play?

Luman: We like to bring Neil Young and Ryan Adams to the dinner table and have Wilco for dessert. Our originals are made from the same ingredients.

GMG: Good Morning Gloucester contributor Kim Smith’s husband Tom was a rock star and knows Ric Ocasek, the lead singer of The Cars. Do you know Ric Ocasek from The Cars?

Luman: No.

GMG: People should know you’re a legit musician who has performed several times at Carnegie Hall in New York, which is like the most famous concert venue in the world or something. What was it like playing there?

Luman: Exactly like Minglewood Tavern but bigger.

GMG: How did Mosse the band get started?

Luman: Mosse was formed by magic. And by magic, I mean we are all teachers who love music and wanted to play in a band without ego and frustration. One of our guitar players, Jerry Smith, was born and raised in Gloucester. Rich Lehrer is our other guitar player and Pete Koeplin is our drummer. We started playing together and slowly weeded through songs until we found the musical core that suited us.  So basically magic.

GMG: Peter and Vickie Van Ness are going to be mad at me for encroaching on their turf and doing a concert preview. This is definitely going to lead to an all-out concert promoter war. Which will be hard because they’re smarter than me and I know zero about music. What time is Mosse playing at Minglewood Tavern this Saturday?

Luman: 9 p.m. Hope to see you there.

VIDEO: Laissez les bons temps rouler (Let the good times roll) it’s Mardi Gras!

Well, here in frosty New England, it used to be just another Tuesday in the dead of winter.  But once Henri Smith moved to Gloucester (after Katrina blew is house down — see short bio here) we started celebrating Mardi Gras and now you have plenty of opportunities to celebrate on Cape Ann.  Here are a few:

Eat and drink at Lat43 and Minglewood from 11:30 – close today and 10% of what you spend goes to help send YMCA Teens on their service learning trips to New Orleans and the Navajo Nation.  Plus you can enter a raffle to win cool prizes (including 4 tickets to see Grammy-winner Charles Neville of the Neville Brothers with Henri Smith on Friday at The Larcom Theatre just down the road in Beverly).

Great music tonight all over town and music is the best way to celebrate.  See the complete live music schedule here.

Any time you like you can see Henri Smith and Charles Neville’s 2012 Mardi Gras concert at Minglewood Tavern on Cape Ann TV’s wicked cool streaming site here.

If you’re NOLA homesick, check out the live webcams here.

Maybe — just maybe — if we celebrate Mardi Gras today, we’ll heat up Cape Ann and usher in Spring a tad earlier.  Laissez les bons temps rouler!

World Series & Rock Music — a “Partnership”

Fox Sports says Eddie Vedder is a diehard Chicago Cubs fan?!?!?!?

In this day and age when rock stars “partner” with big corporations, you wouldn’t expect MLB to be left out, would you?  Of course not.  48 songs from 90s mega-stars Pearl Jam will “soundtrack” (yes they actually use this word as a verb on their website) the 2013 World Series.  There was a time when Pearl Jam was one of only a handful of touring artists that could guarantee to sell out an arena.  The band is on tour again and it makes me wonder who benefits more from this partnership — MLB or Pearl Jam?

Closer to home, local venues are changing their live music schedules knowing that many — if not most of their customers will want to watch the World Series, which begins tonight.  Minglewood Tavern cancelled live music for tonight and tomorrow.

The Rhumb Line moved guest host Allen Estes (filling in for Fly Amero, who’s on tour with Orleans) to 4:30.  He and Orville Giddings will get fans revved up for the game, which starts at 7:30.

John Rockwell will be at Alchemy as scheduled for Ladies Night (telling?)

Henry Allen makes his final appearance at Midori tonight during the game — perfect for those of you who hope the Sox win, but don’t really care to watch.

Whether or not you plan to watch the World Series, you can get a complete listing of local live music with up-to-the minute schedule changes here.

A Beautiful Night ~ Start the weekend by walking to live music @ 6 downtown venues

Start at Captain Carlos with Cripple Cove Quartet at 5.  Walk out the door to catch Alek Razdan & A-Train at Harbor Loop at 6:30, followed by Johnny Carwash.  Then you can walk to Rhumb Line to see Punk legend, Wille Loco, with Dave Sag.

Yes, I said walk.  It’s not that far.  If you’re not from Gloucester check out Google’s Walking Directions (still in beta, but they work well).  Here are Google’s directions for the 13 minute walk from Harbor Loop to Rhumbline.  And it’s a nice walk — especially on a night like tonight.

While they’re on break you can walk down to the Dog Bar, Brew Pub and Minglewood.  No cover for any of these shows tonight, so start the weekened NOW!

Trouble deciding where to go?  See the full live music schedule here.

Stormy weather blues cured by music tonight and over the wekend

Live music starts at 6 tonight, 11 AM tomorrow & Sunday.  You can’t get to every show so here’s the schedule to help you choose.

Tonight you can catch an unusual lineup of top musical talent in one intimate venue that you don’t see every day: Allen Estes has been quietly assembling a band of all-stars,  including the great David Brown, Dave Mattacks and Wolf Ginandes to plug in and rock.   Wait, you might say.  Isn’t Allen Estes, folk, country or americana?  Sometimes.  But when he’s with these guys and their plugged in they ROCK!  And that’s precisely what they’ll do at Minglewood Tavern tonight starting about 9.  Check them out!

Tomorrow, start off at the Blues Fest (weather will clear by morning).  Then take the party to town at any of a dozen venues at night (see here).  Get up Sunday by 11 and check out the Rockport Acoustic Music Fest.

Best Bands in MA coming to Gloucester

It’s a revolution — a slow one.  Perhaps you haven’t even noticed.  In school we’re taught about revolutions as if they happen all at once.  But most of them don’t.  They take years.  One day, you look around and everything has changed.  It’s hard to notice the revolution when we’re in the middle of it.  That’s where we are now — in the middle of Gloucester’s music revolution.  Here’s how you can tell:

On Sunday, The Brew, recently named Best Band in New England by the New England Music Awards, will be at Minglewood.  One quick listen and you’ll know why they won.

Music on Sundays at Minglewood?  That’s right.  This Sunday 6/2 Minglewood Tavern launches a new night of music.  Let’s get down there and prove them right for adding another night to the Gloucester music revolution.

Next Saturday, Boston Magazine’s Best Local Band, Three Day Threshold plays The Rhumbline.  This band ROCKS and defies genre.  Listen here.  They’ve also got a great sense of humor as evidenced by their Facebook description: “good country gone terribly terribly bad”.

If you look at their tour dates, you see they’re at Meadowbrook Pavilion, Middle East Downstairs (the big room) and the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville.  But YOU can see them at The Rhumbline without even crossing the bridge.  That’s revolution.

While you’re at it, check out tomorrow’s Rhumbline choice, Under Griffin’s Porch.  Here’s a prediction: It won’t be long before they win a Best Band award.

Gloucester’s music revolution is all around you.  Join in and have some fun!

Rising Star Brad Byrd on TV and Live @ Dog Bar this week

Brad Byrd (R) w/ Allen Estes on the set of Local Music Seen

We see one of our roles, here at GMG, as making sure you know who’s on the way to making it big.  Rockport native, Brad Byrd is one of those local musicians.  Some day, when Brad’s playing stadiums and you can’t get a ticket for under 200 bucks, you’ll be saying, “I saw him at the Dog Bar in Gloucester, Mass!”  But only if you get down to the Dog Bar tomorrow (THURSDAY) where he’s on at 9pm.

Tonight you can see Brad on Local Music Seen with Allen Estes, which airs at 6:30 on Cape Ann TV Channel 12.  In this show, Brad’s hypnotic voice draws you into his world where you’ll notice that every one of his lyrics is perfectly placed and there isn’t a single extra word. This is some of the best songwriting you’ll hear.

When this show premiered last June, Allen introduced an excellent new song, “The Trouble with Me”.  Here’s a taste:

Almost exactly a year ago, Brad shot a music video for his hit, Zero to the 101 at Minglewood.  Here’s some behind-the-scenes footage from that video shoot.

More behind-the-scenes footage here.  And more Brad Byrd videos here.
