2013 Beaux Arts Ball From Michael Miller

Hi Joey,

Photos from Saturday night’s Beaux Arts Ball. Again, I live over the bridge and by virtue of knowing Marianne in Bayview, I get to be part of these events. The food was plentiful and delicious and the band, Le Prestige, very  professional.

Ryan Russell Represents! In Minnesota (Don’t Ya Know)

Hey Joey,

On a recent road trip (totaling over 3,300 miles round trip) to Minnesota, I thought I could shed some light on this little known fact about a widely know river.

The Mississippi River starts from Lake Itasca, MN when it simply flows over a merely 12 foot wide rock barrier to my left in the picture. From there, “THE MIGHTY MISSISSIPPI BEGINS TO FLOW ON IT’S WINDING WAY 2552 MILES TO THE GULF OF MEXICO.”

Dear Joey,

My wonderful hound is still missing. Every day that goes by i fear

his foot may be caught in a pile of rocks and coyotes

may be tearing him apart. I’ve walked in the woods but i don’t know

them that well.

GMG followers who know the woods of Dogtown,

Quarry areas, and Cape Ann, I need you !! As a writer/photographer,

I’ll document our search and collect your stories of the woods

if you have any. Please come walk in the woods and help me find this

amazing and much loved dog. Know the best maps of the woods ? Tell me.

You love the woods, and so does my hound. Let’s make this a woods-lovers and dog-lovers success story !

Thanks, everyone.

Spiral Jetty

Brace Cove gloucester ©Kim Smith 2013 copy

One of my favorite artists is Robert Smithson (1938-1973), and I especially love his seminal earthwork Spiral Jetty, located in Salt Lake City, Utah, and created in 1970. The Brace Cove Sculptor created a mini-spiral jetty at the high tide line the other day, and it was fun to be reminded again of Smithson’s Spiral Jetty.

Spiral Jetty is an earthwork sculpture made from rock and earth and is located on the northern end of the Great Salt Lake. Three new guardians are working to protect and promote the Spiral Jetty, and they are Dia Art Foundation, based out of New York City, the Great Salt Lake Institute, and the Utah Museum of Fine Art. This Is Our Youth Opens in Gloucester – Aug 8th

This just in from Heidi Dallin:

Kenneth Lonergan’s
This Is Our Youth
Opens At Gloucester Stage

Gloucester Stage continues the 2013 season with Kenneth Lonergan’s This Is Our Youth from August 8 through August 25 in the air-conditioned comfort of Gloucester Stage Company at 267 East Main Street, Gloucester, MA. Kenneth Lonergan’s funny, compassionate and powerful work is a living snapshot of the moment between adolescence and adulthood when many young people first go out into the world on their own, armed only with the ideas and techniques they developed as teenagers. In meticulous and hilarious detail, This Is Our Youth follows forty-eight turbulent hours in the lives of three very lost young souls in the big city in 1982 at the dawn of the Reagan Era. Lonergan examines the lives of three privileged teenagers in 1980’s Manhattan’s Upper West Side – when and where an abundance of worldly knowledge proves no substitute for familial affection. Directed by Lewis D. Wheeler, This Is Our Youth features the return of Jimi Stanton and Amanda Collins from 2012’s critically acclaimed 9 Circles, and the Gloucester Stage debut of Elliot Norton award winner Alex Pollock.

The performance schedule for This Is Our Youth is Thursday, August 8 through Saturday, August 10 at 8 pm; Wednesday, August 14 through Saturday, August 17 at 8 pm Wednesday, August 21 through Saturday, August 24 at 8 pm; Saturday matinees on August 10, August 17 and August 24 at 3 pm and Sunday performances on August 11, August 18 and August 25 at 4 pm. The 3 pm Saturday matinee on August 10 is a special Pay What You Can matinee. For this Saturday matinee only the ticket price is Pay What You Can. A limited amount of discount tickets are available to Cape Ann residents for all Wednesday and Thursday 8 pm performances. For these performances only, Cape Ann residents can purchase discounted tickets for $20. Advance reservations are strongly suggested to ensure tickets at the discounted price. Year round Cape Ann residents must identify themselves as Cape Ann residents when making a reservation and proof of residency must be presented at the box office the night of the performance. Following the 4 pm performance on Sunday, August 11, audiences are invited to a free post show discussion with the artists from This Is Our Youth. Gloucester Stage is handicapped accessible. Ticket prices are $40 for all performances. Senior citizen & student tickets are $35 for all performances. Enjoying vacation in New York State

I’m sorry to have missed the  Gloucester Street Bazaar, but I’m off having a grand old time with family in New York State.  This is part 1 of a 2-part vacation, so I won’t be back with new Gloucester photos for a few days.  In the meantime, here is a taste of a Hutchings’ (my mother’s side of the family) get-together!

Beautiful landscapes:

And of course I’m doing origami, but I already posted some of those photos… and more will be showing up soon!

Amistad From Mary Barker

Hi Joey

The Amistad’s captain, Greg Bailey, was gracious enough to allow me onboard to take some photos.

2 of his crew, Whitney and Scott, were kind to give me a tour and some education.  The Amistad is such a

gorgeous historical boat, in such a wonderfully historic port.  She is absolutely a must see while she is visiting.

The Amistad is docked on the Harbor Loop at the Maritime Center, near the Ardelle.  Here are a few photos.
