Video- East Gloucester Elementary Flash Mob From Martin DelVecchio

Martin writes-

My wife Michele decided to mix things up at this year’s end-of-year picnic at East Gloucester Elementary School.

Add in some calypso by Harry Belafonte, choreography by Sarah Slifer Swift, and videography by Jason Grow, and here are the results.

Enjoy!

Chickity Check It! New England Surf Company

PR Image

Over the past few years there has been a rise in surfing, and now stand up paddle (SUP)  in New England  and two local surfers, Collin Goodrow and David Stowell, co-founders of The New England Surf Company (NESC), saw it as a chance to create surf apparel and accessories exclusive to the New England coldwater surfing experience.  The co-founders, forever loyal to the unique surf community, culture, and local history, stay true to their maritime roots when creating NESC designs, like the popular Surf Co block print design.

Recently, NESC started a Brand Ambassador program to foster a love for New England surfing and other water sports.   They’ve recruited New England standouts in the surf and SUP surf categories as a way to connect with the community and promote surf protection-activism.

Another way NESC strives to make a local and meaningful impact is through their “Go Blue” initiative.

“GO BLUE” with the simply stated motto “Save Our Waves,” helps raise awareness and support other organizations that are making a positive difference in the local economy, communities, and environment.  NESC dedicates a portion of sale proceeds of the GO BLUE t-shirts and bracelets to organizations that work to save our oceans, beaches and waves.

NESC designs and products are being picked up, sold and displayed in more surf shops throughout New England every day including SURFARI SUP in Manchester-by-the-Sea, the Gloucester House General Store in Gloucester MA, Ocean House Surf Shop in Swampscott MA, or Cinnamon Rainbows located in Hampton NH, where you can find your next favorite NESC t-shirt, sweatshirt or beanie with ease.

If your local shop is sold out, no worries the NESC online store gives you immediate access to NESC products. NESC guarantees to keep you stoked and connected with America’s “original” north shore and the regions truly unique surfing experience. Check out the New England Surf Company today at www.newenglandsurfco.com  facebook and twitter and be sure to tell a friend! And if you’re interested in getting involved in representing the brand through our Amabassador program get in touch we’re always on the lookout for new team talent and help spread the stoke!

Annual fiesta beer pong tournament

Hi Joey my name is Tony and Ive followed gmg for a few years and think the site is great! I know your always interested in fun and obscure events so I think this one would be up your alley. For the past 6 years myself and a bunch of my friends have be playing on our 91cup vs 91 cup beer pong tourney for fiesta. It’s a blast and the amount of pong cups that are in the tables are absurd! 182 cups!

Anyway we usually do this on the Saturday of fiesta but since we are all in our early 30’s weddings children ect have caused us to change it to August 3rd this year. . I’ll send a few pictures of the event as well. Enjoy the rest of fiesta and keep up the kick ass work on the site.
Thanks,
Tony

Joey:

Can you post this with a notation that the first 100 runners receive a free tee shirt.

Thanks,

Thomas M. Lattof

Penelope Crane Asks If Any Fishermen are Wearing Utilikilts

Are there any Fisherman in Gloucester wearing these?

I see them in Maine from time to time.

Makes sense this time of year!

The man the repairs our small engines on lawn equipment does.

Live At Pavilion Beach From Kim Smith

Hi My Name Is Hulk

My name is Hulk and I am a year and half old Beagle Mix and I love to play. Recently my brother Champ was diagnosed with Degenerate Spinal Disease.

His injury is critical and now I cannot play with him. I use to be able to run and play and we had a good time. Now all I can do is lay next to him.

I need to find a home that either has another playful dog like myself or a family who can  walk me or run with me or bring me to the dog park.

I would like to keep my name, I think it fits me well. My Mom and Dad want to make sure I find a good home and will not let me go until we find the perfect fit.

After all I am the cutest dog you’ve ever seen!

If you are interested you can email my mom,

Thank you,

Hulk Cox DeWolfe

Friday’s Fiesta Fun

What a great Friday afternoon at Fiesta.  The rain stopped and the sun and fun started.

St. Peter’s Fiesta Climax is full of music

Fiesta Sunday is the big day (see the schedule here).  This year one our local favorites, Cape Ann Big Band, kicks off the official Fiesta Sunday music from the St. Peter’s Park Stage at 3pm — and they have a terrific lineup of guest vocalists: Kate Barry, Mari Martin, Carolyn Seavey, and Steve Russo!  You just don’t want to miss this.  Here’s a taste of their talent from their first year of performing — and they get better every year!

Of course there’s music all day and into the night on Sunday all over Cape Ann — 16 live shows as of this posting.  Always check the complete live music listings for latest updates.

Who Remembers the Catnip Man?

catnip man

Lora Merchant came into the gallery to visit today.  Lora grew up on Rocky Neck, moved away when she was 20, now lives in Georgia, and would do anything to live back in Gloucester again.  She mentioned something about giving up two fingers to anyone from Gloucester who would trade places with her in Georgia – a little extreme, but I can understand.  We talked about all sorts of things Gloucester, and then she mentioned the Catnip Man, who she remembered following down the street when she was a young girl.  He was a kind of scruffy character who grew catnip, which he walked the streets of Gloucester selling, followed by a clowder of cats.  Does anyone else remember the Catnip Man, called Catnip Bill?  He was the subject of the children’s book “Catnip Man” written in 1951 by Rockport author, Ruth Holberg.

According to Stephen P. Hall of Beverly, the Capnip Man’s real name was William Albert Joseph Patrick Swayne Luscomb.  Bill lived the last years of his life in a rooming house at 32 Broadway Street in Beverly, and was a familiar sight on Cabot Street in the late 1950s until his death in 1962.

Rubber Duck’s Haul at the Rockport Farmers’ Market

rdhaulFrom the Doughnut clockwise:

An actual Butternut Crunch Doughnut and Nisu Bread from Brothers’ Brew Coffee Shop Rockport. The Butternut was still warm. BB has to start cranking more of these puppies out. They run out by 9AM most mornings but if you go here Saturday early you can nail one.

Mann’s Cherry Pie from Mann Orchards in Methuen. Looked too good to pass up.

Two Bell Jars of Ma’s Tomato Marmalade, one hot, one sweet. Taste test said these were going in the basket. 2 Cross Street Gloucester. This place also had some awesome pickles and told us where to get fresh turmeric to make our own.

Sasquatch Smokehouse Smoked Mussels. Holy Cow, taste test said these had to go and next Saturday the smoked Cod will have to go too. 44 Whittemore Street Gloucester.

Porterhouse Steak from Seaview Farm 38 South Street. I’ll get back to you on the taste test but local grass fed beef? A big Rubber Thumbs up. [added edit] Wow, the porterhouse was cooked perfectly by Chef Ted (son) and was very tasty.

What we did not get: Twinlights Soda. Missed it. Fresh made pasta: we were going to circle back but forgot. That’s OK. This is going to be a Saturday 9AM (parking available then) ritual during the summer. And I will hunt some of these places down in the near future.
