It’s time to laugh

Feel like you’re drowning in negative buzz?  Maybe it’s time to laugh. You’ll laugh alright on Saturday night, right down the road in Beverly at 9 Wallis when Loretta LaRoche takes you back to Brooklyn and back in time to the humor of growing up with her Italian family in her hysterical show Love, Laughter, and Lasagna.

You can even eat some lasagna prepared by Beverly’s favorite deli Gloria Food Store before the show to get you in the mood.

You may remember Loretta from her PBS specials (see video below) or inspirational programs at North Shore Music Theatre a few years ago — and those programs were funny. Trust me: Love Laughter and Lasagna is even funnier!  Come on down; you’ll feel better!

It’s much harder to write a good review than a bad one

Inge Berge

It’s not that hard to write review panning a concert or an album.  You’ve probably read many such reviews.  It’s much more difficult to write a glowing piece that doesn’t sound corny or like a puff piece.  Below is one of the best examples of a rave review that I’ve ever read. It is at once intelligent, witty, entertaining, straight to the point and completely devoid of obscure references and highfalutin language reviewers all to often use in an attempt to show off their intellect.  It’s written by local singer/songwriter/composer/lighting designer Inge Berge, who is actually smart, so he doesn’t need to try and convince anybody.  Check it out:

Fans of exquisite music: Pay attention to Ruby Rose Fox. Her headlining at The Cabot tonight, courtesy of Peter Van Ness and GimmeLive is easily among the top 3 shows I’ve seen all year (and I see way too many shows.) This show was pure magic. Sublime. Genius.

Her songwriting is smart, heartfelt, genre-bending, profound and just plain gorgeous. Her musicianship is impeccable. Her stage presence is mysterious, deep, eclectic and sexy as all get-out. The backup singers blend like butter yet cut like a razor. The band is road-tight and stadium-confident. The material is presented with rock balls, sensual vulnerability and analytic intelligence. A show chemically cleansed of clichés and standard showbiz cheese.

I count myself among the lucky few who got to experience this evening of not-yet-world-famous MA-grown music before it turns into something more industry-processed. (Hopefully not.)

Unfortunately, what I find of Ruby Rose Fox’s music currently online does not quite do justice to the show I saw tonight. But I understand there’s a full length CD in the works. I’m first in line to purchase.

Sometimes you just gotta cross the bridge

Last night, a number of our Gloucester friends came to the Robert Randolph & The Family Band concert we presented at The Cabot in Beverly, some of whom exclaimed, “Boy it’s just amazing that we can see this level of music so close to home!”

Indeed, Beverly is about as close as a national touring artist, the likes of Robert Randolph, is likely to get to Gloucester.  So perhaps it’s time for us to extend our notion of “just down the road” to include Beverly, which is … dare I say … over the bridge.

Tomorrow we’re bringing three of the hottest Boston area bands to the Cabot stage: Boston Music Award winners Ruby Rose Fox and Jesse Dee with Salem’s Sarah & the Wild Versatile.  We believe all three bands will soon be playing much bigger venues — that are much farther away than Beverly and — oh yeah — charge a whole lot more for tickets.  ALL AGES  seats for tomorrow’s concert start at $15 (the same as it costs to see Jurassic World at the mall).  It’s a great show for your kids, who’ll be able to say “I saw them up close at The Cabot!”  Good seats are still available here.

What did B.B. King think of Alexis P. Suter? See for yourself at the Gloucester Blues Fest Aug 8

The first time B.B. King heard Alexis P. Suter sing is when she opened for him in NYC.  This is what B.B. King said, “It’s a rare thing to share the stage with great talent like that young lady.”

On August 8th, only eight weeks from this Saturday, you can experience what he was talking about at the 4th annual Gloucester Blues Festival at Stage Fort Park.  Plus you get to hear 6 other blues legends too, including the guy known as “Hendrix of the Harminica,” Sugar Blue!

You know you want to be there and you don’t want be one of those people who forgets that you can save $12 per ticket by getting them now (GET TICKETS HERE).  So don’t put it off any longer.

Here’s a little taste of what you can expect from Alexis P. Suter at The Gloucester Blues Festival.

Most of you who follow us know that we present concerts just down the road at Beverly’s Larcom Theatre (among other venues).

This summer we’ll also be presenting concerts at The Cabot — and the first one we’ve put on sale is John Cafferty & the Beaver Brown Band with special guest Charlie Farren on Friday, July 31 — and it’s helping us answer two questions at once: “When are you bringing John Cafferty back?” and “When are you bringing Charlie Farren back?”

We figured this summer was the perfect time to party at The Cabot with these 2 high-energy rock stars, who haven’t performed together on stage for years.

It’s an All Ages show with reserved seats starting at only $25.  Get your tickets now (RIGHT HERE) because this show will sell quickly!

Q: Who’s the Hendrix of the Harmonica? A: Sugar Blue and you can see him LIVE at the Gloucester Blues Fest Aug 8

Three months from today on Saturday, August 8th, The 4th annual Gloucester Blues Festival kicks summer into high gear at Stage Fort Park featuring top national blues stars, including the man who’s known as Hendrix of the Harmonica, Sugar Blue. You’ve heard his signature playing on “Miss You” by The Rolling Stones. (You didn’t think Mick played that harp did you?)

Now you have the chance to see this blues icon (who’s also recorded with Willie Dixon, Prince, Stan Getz, Bob Dylan and many other) LIVE IN GLOUCESTER at The Gloucester Blues Festival on August 8th at Stage Fort Park.

What kills me is how much cheaper the tickets are if you buy them in advance — only $28 (GET TICKETS HERE) as opposed to $40 at the gate.  So stop what you’re doing right now and GET A PAIR OF TIX FOR YOUR MOM (and a pair for yourself too).

Here’s Sugar Blue live (Ooooh, what a tight band he’s got too!)

And here’s the Rolling Stones’ multi-platinum hit “Miss You” — you don’t see a harp in Mitch’s mouth, do you?

1980s hit-maker Martha Davis interview on 104.9 SUNDAY @ 9AM

This Sunday (4/19) at 9AM, Aurelia Nelson welcomes 80s rocker Martha Davis, founder of The Motels, to her North Shore 104.9 radio show “Curtain Up” for a spirited interview about what it’s like to be “the most charismatic female performer in rock,” as described by Robert Hilburn of The Los Angeles Times.

Martha Davis is credited with helping to define the New Wave sound that dominated MTV and pop radio in the 1980s.

But she’s not one of those rockers who’s satisfied to live off her prior success. She’s still writing new songs, recording new music and discovering new talent, like Boston Music Award Winner Ruby Rose Fox who opens The Motels show down the road at The Larcom Theatre on Wednesday (good seats still available, especially in the balcony — get them here.)

And she’s about to release a film of her live performance at the 50th anniversary of the famed Whisky-A-Go-Go, where she changed the face New Wave music forever.  Check out the trailer here:

Jimmy Fallon liked our SXSW pick so much he put her on The Tonight show last night

We all know that Jimmy Fallon is a huge FOB and either he or his staff reads GMG every day.

What we didn’t know is how seriously he takes our suggestions.

That is, until last night when he introduced our #1 pick from SXSW, Elle King (we picked her in this post) as his musical guest last night.

See Elle King’s Tonight Show performance here.

“Take the L out of Lover and it’s Over” – April 22

Don’t you just love that line?  It’s the chorus of this MTV smash hit by Martha Davis and the Motels.

You can see her and the band LIVE, just down the road at Beverly’s Larcom Theatre on April 22 during what is shaping up to be 80s week, with the Smithereens performing there on April 25.

Tickets just went on sale to the public today and they’re selling fast, so you might want to get them (RIGHT HERE) before it’s too late.  Here’s what the critics say:

“…arguably the most charismatic female performer in rock.” – Robert Hilburn, The Los Angeles Times

“Martha Davis, of the Motels, was still strong in voice and admirably delivered hits like ‘Only The Lonely’ and ‘Suddenly Last Summer.'” – Hollywood Reporter (about recent Hollywood Bowl Concert)

And here’s another of her top 10 hits, “Only The Lonely”:

The best way to support local musicians is to go to their big shows — like TONIGHT

When your favorite local band gets to open for a multi-platinum, national recording star, the best way to honor that opportunity is to go to the show.  And you can do that by bopping on down to road to  Beverly’s Larcom Theatre TONIGHT at 8pm.  Good seats are still left to see  Gary Backstrom Band open for John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band.  Get those seats RIGHT HERE.  Some of the best available seats are in the balcony GET THEM HERE.

And there’s a wonderful personal connection going on at this show.  Gary’s drummer Mike Doyle studied at Berklee with Jackie Santos, who plays drums for Beaver Brown Band. This will be the first time student and teacher have performed on the same stage in a while.  ANT THEY’LL BE HOT!

In fact, John Cafferty and “Tunes” sound better and have more energy now than they did in this 1984 video.

Appears almost sold out, but there really are plenty of good seats left

If you’ve been following us for a while, you know we always warn you when a concert is about to sell out.  A quick glance at the seating chart for next Saturday’s John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band concert at Beverly’s Larcom Theatre, looks like it’s almost sold out.  But here’s the thing: there are lots of excellent seats left.  Most importantly, every seat at the Larcom has a great view and the sound is PERFECT!  For this show, the best available seats are in the Balcony and you can get them here.

This will be a special show, in part because local Rock Star, Gary Backstrom, is opening with his excellent band — and there’s a wonderful personal connection at play too: Gary’s drummer, Mike Doyle, studied at Berklee with Jackie Santos of the Beaver Brown Band.  You don’t want to wait until it really is sold out and miss this drummer’s reunion do you?

You can see Mike showing off at 3:23 in the video below, of Gary Backstrom Band at Harbor Loop.

And just in case you’ve forgotten the cult hit Eddie and the Cruisers (for which John Cafferty wrote and sang his hit “On The Dark Side”, here it is (with the movie’s co-star and Beaver Brown member, Michael “Tunes” Antunes on sax).

Gary’s got quite an impressive bio (see here) having opened for the Allman Brothers, Derek Trucks and Los Lobos among many others.

Besides being one of the area’s top guitar players, Gary is also a very talented singer/songwriter.  Here are a couple of videos of the band at Harbor Loop with special guest Carlos Menezes Jr. on Sax (great solos in the 2nd video):

Here’s a taste of these two stars:

BMA Nominee Gracie Curran on Aurelia Nelson’s Curtain UP tomorrow (SUN) at 9AM

Gracie Curran at Larcom Theatre April 2014

Here’s some irony: Earlier this month, the Boston Globe announced this year’s Boston Music Wards nominees (see here) which include Gracie Curran for Blues Artist of the Year.  A few days later the Boston Herald cited Gracie Curran’s move from the Boston area to Memphis as an example of local blues artists’ response to the a loss of venues that offer them a place to preform (see here).

Vickie and I are bringing Gracie back to Beverly’s Larcom Theatre next Saturday NOV 1, for one night only with young, award-winning piano player Victor Wainwright, who got the first standing ovation at this year’s Gloucester Blues Fest.  GET TIX HERE.

Tomorrow, you can hear Gracie talk about the her career, the Blues, Memphis, Boston and much more on Aurelia Nelson’s Curtain Up radio show on North Shore 104.9FM at 9am.  Yeah, this will be worth getting up for.

Rock n Roll Hall of Famer John Sebastian comes to Gloucester Next Saturday 9/13

It’s not often that a rock star this big performs in downtown Gloucester.  Remember The Lovin’ Spoonful?

How about Woodstock, which was 45 years ago this August?

When John Sebastian performs next Saturday at Gloucester’s UU Meetinghouse, he won’t be wearing the tie-dye jacket he’s got on in this video, because it’s now on display at the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. He will, however, sing some of his most enduring #1 hits like “Do You Believe In Magic?”, “Daydream”, “Summer In The City” and “Welcome Back” the theme song from Welcome Back Kotter.

And he’ll tell some wonderful, fascinating stories rooted in the major role he played in the mid-’60s rock revolution.  Don’t miss this rare chance to experience music that defined a generation up close and personal.  Get your tickets now (right here).
