MARI MARTIN PERFORMS FRIDAY AUGUST 13 AT MUSIC ON MEETINGHOUSE GREEN
The Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundation presents Mari Martin in a free Friday evening concert on Meetinghouse Green at the corner of Middle and Church Street, August 13 at 6:00 p.m.
Mari Martin has been enthralling audiences from Cape Ann to Santa Barbara with her compelling voice and signature stage presence for over 25 years. Her influences and songs range from the Beatles to Stevie Wonder, the Rolling Stones to Billie Holiday. Add a dash or two of Bonnie Raitt, Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald and Eric Clapton and you can hear her musical versatility.

Free-will donations go to the evening’s featured local non-profit partner, HAWC, a group committed to ending the domestic violence epidemic, educating the community, and offering help for abused women, children, and men in Massachusetts. Local food vendor for the evening is Jalapenos. The 2021 summer music series is dedicated in memory of Harry Hintlian for his encouragement, generosity, and for making the Meetinghouse a net zero building. For more information, a full schedule of upcoming concerts, and to sign up for the GMF newsletter, visit www.gloucestermeetinghouse.org.

Music at the Beach Concert Series

Screen Shot 2017-07-16 at 9.26.02 PM

The new and exciting Music at the Beach Concert Series  kicks off this week, on TUESDAY night, with Pier Ave performing at the bandstand at Rockport’s Back Beach at 6:00pm. Check out Pier Ave in their video here!

The idea for Music at the Beach started taking shape thanks to a conversation between Bruce Reed and Don “Duffy” Greel, the Supervisor of Rockport’s DPW.  During the conversation Duffy spoke of the concert series at the bandstand in the New Hampshire town where he has a camp. Reed had already been thinking that the bandstand could prove to further build community and would be the perfect venue for family events.

Bruce Reed explains…

I discussed some ideas with Rockport’s Town Administrator, Linda Sanders.  Funding was always the major issue.  I had a core group willing to help with ideas, but we still had no funding.  Selectwoman, Sarah Fiumara Wilkinson, learned about a group named “Awesome Rockport” who is committed to identifying and supporting local initiatives.  We filled out their form and were selected as one of three finalists.  My 9 year-old cochairman, Wyatt Wilkinson, and I developed a presentation and won the grant.  Wyatt and I then presented to the Board of Selectman and received their sponsorship.

The buzz around town for Tuesday’s event is quickly spreading and many people, including yours truly, are really excited to attend!  We are very appreciative to Bruce Reed, Wyatt Wilkinson (9 years-old, bears repeating!), Awesome Rockport, and the Board of Selectmen….as well as anyone else who played a role.

These are community events for all ages and people are encouraged to bring blankets, chairs, and picnics.

We all need a little edumacation and respeck, so c’mon down to the Rummie this Thursday for another Blooz Semenar by that quixotic quack master of indigo, Professor Harp.* He’s got this harmonica that’s plugged into either an electric razor or a blender before it gets directly drilled into your skull. Goes ZZZZZ, beep, wheee, uncle! But seriously, folks. Prof H is the real deal and since he’s driving all the way from New Bedford to sing in Portuguese for you, the least you could do is bring some kale and mebbe some chorizo.

Also, special guests Mari Martin and a dear friend from the west coast, George Friedenthal!
Mike DiBari, sizzling blowtorch of pain, will be on the guitar. Steevee Chaggaris, with that beautiful head of skin, will be on tubs.

Dave says,

Well, I’m a little late this time around due to complications with cosmetic hippocampus surgery, but not to worry, the voices have all gone, like a pile of popcorn by my feet, eaten by unseen pigeons. Also, the lineup hadn’t been solidified till now, so let the nailbiting cease!
Let’s welcome back Ms. Mari Martin and her oversized vocal pipes to our musical carousel of a stage this week. I know, I know, she just played here last Saturday with her rootin-tootin band of musical outlaws, but this time around we’re really mixing it up.

Y
First, throw  Mr. Mike DiBari, glitarist deluxe, a veteran ack-ack gunner, into a large pot. Then add the pulsations and random cacklings of that tonsorially-challenged timekeeper; Mr. Steevee Chaggaris. Fold in two quarts of vodka-infused bass by yours truly, then pour in 180 pounds of fatback organisms and keyboard stylings of the prolific Mr. Mark Retallack. Beat well. Strain through a felt hat. Insert large funnel into trepanned hole in skull.Pour. Ahhh…. Honey, I’m home……

Mari Martin and The Lucky Boys (Mari Martin, Vinny Briguglio, Mark Retallack Bob Enik Roger Brockelbank closed out the evening. Jazz, rock and roll filled the air for hours. It was a perfect night for a concert and so much fun!

Hot music weekend in the dead of Winter

Well, anybody who thinks Cape Ann’s music scene is only hot during tourist season should look at this weekend’s lineup (see full weekend music schedule here).

That’s the good news.  The bad news is that you just can’t see every good show this weekend.  You’re gonna have to choose.  Maybe I can help.  It just so happens that I’ve recently interviewed two people who are performing this weekend at Shalin Liu.

Here’s my interview with Brian Gore, whose International Guitar Night performs tonight at 8PM.

And here’s my interview with Kendrick Oliver, director of the New Life Jazz Orchestra, who’s performing tomorrow at 8PM.

And don’t forget Mark Berger & Ride with dramatic photographs from out west as the backdrop for this Old Sloop concert tomorrow.

And it’s Crazy Moon’s final weekend at Rocky Neck Art Colony.

Plus some of Cape Ann’s favorites all over town, including Linda Amero, Charlee Bianchini & Dave Brown, Runaround, Dan King, Michael O’Leary, Mari Martin, Allen Estes & Orville Giddings — and there’s the Community Sing-a-long in Celebration of Pete Seeger at the Lanesville Community Center tonight.  WOW!  Is your head spinning?  Click here for some help choosing.

Mari Martin joins The Blues Party at The Rhumb Line Tonight 8:30 -11:30 – 7.25.2013

dave-lookin-at-yaDave says,

We’re gonna throw everything we got including the kitchen sink into the musical cauldron. And floating up to the top will be that Rockport Rascal and Blues Behemoth, the one and only Ms. Mari Martin. It’s always a pleasure to hear this nightingale sing. She can adjust her uvula in many ways to make your hippocampus explode on cue. My pants will be held up by a strong belt of vodka. Your earrings may melt. Every tune is scientifically designed for  shaking one’s tootsies. Need I say more?

mari martin3

Adding creme filling to the proceedings will be that unflappable glitar whiz, Mr. Bob Enik. This guy scares me: you can’t lose him…..

He’s bringing his buddy, the keyboard millipede Mr. Jim Gambino, from the crime family. You better like him, or else. Also, Mr. Roger Brocklebank, the heartbeat of Madhouse® and fine drum instructor, will her beating time along with myself, on base. Don’t forget your Serutan®!

St. Peter’s Fiesta Climax is full of music

Fiesta Sunday is the big day (see the schedule here).  This year one our local favorites, Cape Ann Big Band, kicks off the official Fiesta Sunday music from the St. Peter’s Park Stage at 3pm — and they have a terrific lineup of guest vocalists: Kate Barry, Mari Martin, Carolyn Seavey, and Steve Russo!  You just don’t want to miss this.  Here’s a taste of their talent from their first year of performing — and they get better every year!

Of course there’s music all day and into the night on Sunday all over Cape Ann — 16 live shows as of this posting.  Always check the complete live music listings for latest updates.

Cape Ann Museum – Music in the Courtyard

Wonderfully talented Gloucester native Mari Martin was singing jazz in the courtyard of the Cape Ann Museum this past Friday from 4 to 5PM, accompanied by bass and keyboard. Here is a slideshow of the event:
