Herbert George (H.G.) Wells Quote of The Week From Greg Bover

"Moral indignation is jealousy with a halo."
Herbert George (H.G.) Wells (1866-1946)

Born in the county of Kent in England, Welles is primarily known for his speculative fiction successes, The War of the Worlds and The Time Machine, although he wrote novels in other genres and a great deal of non-fiction history. His early training as a biologist is reflected in the Darwinian nature of many of his plot lines, though he was a prominent member of the socialist Fabian Society. A controversial figure in English literary circles, Welles supported eugenics and spoke against Zionism until his horror at the actions of the Nazis caused him to reverse both stands. He had several lovers of note, including early contraception proponent Margaret Sanger and Rebecca Sackville-West, with whom he fathered a son, Anthony. Welles was the founder of an organization to promote better industrial design in Britain, as well as another to combat diabetes, from which he suffered. Along with Hugo Gernsback and Jules Verne he is often called  “The Father of Science Fiction.” It is reported that he wished his epitaph to read “I told you so, you damned fools,” but he was cremated and his ashes scattered at sea.

Big Time Props To The Efficient, Friendly and Hard Working Staff At Cape Ann Insurance

I go to get a sticker for my pick up and the kind folks at Gaybrook inform me that my truck isn’t registered.

I call up the girls at Cape Ann insurance (they open at 8:30AM) head down and within 3 minutes I have myself a registered truck and sticker for my license plate.

All done with a smile and some friendly banter about how we all dig Tacos Lupita.

But beyond the stellar friendly service, the rates that they give to me personally and our business is far and away less than what we were paying at the old school insurance agency where our family had been for years.  We were loyal to that old company for a long long while and when we asked to re-examine our policies because they seemed way out of line with what our friends were paying for similar vehicles with similar coverage they didn’t seem to be able to compete for one reason or another.

So now we are with Cape Ann Insurance and couldn’t be happier.  I’m not getting any special treatment for writing this, we aren’t doing advertising for Cape Ann Insurance I just want to forward on when I think my readership can benefit from something.

They rock.  If you are happy with your insurance agency then stick with them.  But if you feel like your rates are way out of line, give them a call.  It can’t hurt. (and they’re really really nice)

Barred Owlet at Ravenswood From Bill O’Connor

Hi Joey,

We had a nice walk through Ravenswood Park this past Sunday, and even though it was pretty wet, we still had a great time!  We were fortunate enough to see the barred owlet perched on the edge of the tree he temporarily calls home. When I scoped the trees with my telephoto lens, I saw the mother owl in the next tree over keeping a close watch!  In the wider shot, you can see the mother blurred in the background near the left edge of the photo, and the owlet on the right edge.

Ramona Latham, Ravenswood’s Program Director,  seems to think he’s getting ready to spread his wings!  When he does, he’ll leave the nest and head deeper into the woods.

Enjoy!

Congratulations on your graduations.

We couldn’t be prouder of you both.

You are both beautiful, smart and kind and to say that we are proud of the young adults you have become would be the understatement of the year.

Also kudos to Sista Felicia the maniac and the guy who does so much and leads their family with quiet strength Barry.  You both are inspirational as to how to shower your children with love and always put them first.  The results speak for themselves.

You guys have always been great kids.  Kids that any family would be proud of.  Now you’re great young adults.  Keep on the track you’re on. Smile

Chicken Soup for What Ails

Trudging around a stone yard looking for just the perfect stepping stones for a client’s garden, in the ceaseless-downpour-and-howling-umbrella-ruining-wind that was yesterday, I had my family’s favorite Lemon Chicken Soup to look forward to serving for dinner. I think what makes this soup so restorative is the quantity of, and tanginess of, the lemons combined with the piles of rich flavorful mushrooms. Both my kids LOVE this recipe and at the first sign of a cold or flu they request it for dinner–a sure cure for whatever ails–or at least the very least, one will feel better for a few moments while consuming!

Cover a whole chicken with water, throw into the pot 1 onion quartered, 1-2 celery stalks, whole black pepper, and bouquet garni. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low, and simmer  for approximately 1- 1.5 hours, until the chicken falls off the bone.

Remove the chicken to a cutting board and strain the stock. Set stock aside undisturbed for about fifteen minutes. Skim away the fat that has risen to the top. Cut the chicken into bite-sized serving pieces.

While preparing the soup, cook al dente 1/2 box of orzo.

1 Chicken

Chicken stock

2 Tbs. Olive oil

2 Garlic cloves

1-2 Onions

2 8-10 oz packages of button mushrooms, total 16 – 20 oz.

1 Zucchini or 3 carrots (or both)

3-4 celery stalks

4 Large Lemons

Fresh baby spinach leaves

Salt, pepper, and fresh thyme or dried thyme

Heat olive oil in a large pan with two cloves of garlic. Remove the garlic after about 30 seconds–when after just a hint of the garlic aroma has been released. Saute onions in olive oil until they are a pale golden brown. Add carrots and celery and cook until they give a tiny bit when pressed with a fork. Add mushrooms and cook down until deliciously soft and aromatic and much juice has been released. Add zucchini and cook for several minutes more. Pour the stock over the vegetable mixture. Add the cooked pasta. Squeeze the juice of 3 lemons, remove seeds, and add to the soup. Slice remaining lemon in half lengthwise and then into thin half-round slices. Squeeze the lemon slices gently to release the oil and zest as you toss into the pot. Add a pinch of thyme and salt and freshly ground pepper to taste. Add handfuls of fresh spinach leaves  just before serving.

20 Ounces of mushrooms–the quantity of mushrooms lends a rich, flavorful component.

New Good Morning Gloucester Series: Tips For PR Professionals

Hey I just created and edit a blog that reaches an average of 38,000 people a day and won CBS Boston’s Most Valuable Blogger Award.   What do I know, right?

gmglogohires200x200

I’m no professional but I’d like to offer up tips to the PR professional who may be responsible for getting out their client’s messages or their community organization’s message.

From an editor’s perspective who gets to decide what makes it on our pages I’ll offer up some tips on how to get the stuff you are interested in promoting, promoted.

Tip #1

Make it easy for the editor.

I’m running a business and get to tend to the blog in the sparse down time that I have from running the business that pays my bills.  Make shit easy for me.

The best press releases are interesting stories that provide some type of payback for my readership.

In the email that you send me pitching your idea, type it out the way you would like it written and in the subject line type the title of the post the way you would like to see it on the blog.

I’m not too proud, I’m a goddamn professional copy and paster, believe me.  If I can easily copy and paste your copy without it being in some crazy font or weird formatted margins that makes me happy.  The worst is when I  have to backspace 40 lines of copy to make it look like a normal paragraph and I tend to get irritated when I get something preformatted in some weird 7 words of copy per line.  The absolute worst.  I have better stuff to do than to realign your message.  I can create much more interesting stuff for my readership in the limited time I have to work on my publication than what I will be editing for you, believe me.

In the email you send, include the hyperlinks to the corresponding organization or where you want the reader to go for more info.

Provide a nice pdf and think about where it will be displayed.  For example: if your organization is making flyers to post on standard sized 8.5 x 11 inch paper for around town and you send that to me with standard sized font, when it gets shrunk down for display on the blog, the column which we display it will be about half that.  So the standard sized font you used for a coffee shop flyer will be half that size when posted the blog and barely legible if legible at all.

If you continually send me stuff that I need to edit the shit out of to make work I will ignore you (unless I really like you and you bring me food).

This will be a weekly feature.

Pass it on.
