Strange Jelly Fish from Bill Trefry

Joey,

This morning in Smith Cove a very strange jelly fish was found attached to a piling. It is about 4.5ft in length and very sparkly reddish maroon. This jelly fish is also rather thick. It looks like a scarf hanging from the piling. Anyone else see these around?  Thanks, Bill Trefry

Aaron Neville says he’ll play songs from his new album (produced by Keith Richards) on Saturday

Aaron Neville – Don Was – Keith Richards

Check out this Aaron Neville interview with Aurelia Nelson on Northshore 104.9.  Aaron says he will perform many of his Grammy nominated hits in multiple genres, including standards, pop, soul, R&B, jazz and even some doo-wop from his new album (due out this fall) produced by Keith Richards (who also plays guitar on the album) and legendary producer Don Was, president of Blue Note Records, on which the album will be released.

Aaron also talks about his love of music, 50 years of writing and performing and how technology is changing the process of mixing and producing his new album.

When asked how he decides what songs to perform he says, “The voice is a connection between hearts … I just want to connect with the people there listening … ”  VIP tickets for Saturday’s concert are sold out, but good seats are still available.  Get tickets here.

Fiesta and Rockport Chamber Music Festival ought to be enough excitement for one week, but in addition to that, we’ve got 42 more artists in 18 venues, including a schooner!  See the full live music lineup here.

Katerina Smirnova Closing Reception June 27th

Katerina Smirnova writes-

Dear friends, residents of Gloucester and art lovers! I would like to invite you all to the closing reception of my Goetemann artist residence which will take place on June 27th 2012 at 7pm at my studio on 51 A Rocky Neck Ave.

I am having an absolutely wonderful time on the Rocky Neck and I am in love with the community, scenery and my little studio. I have done a lot during my stay and I would love to show you my works that I have produced in June:

Gloucester in fog, sunset over the city or my hand-caught and collected squid ink sketches. All works will be displayed and be available for sale. At 8pm I will give a little speech about my experience at the residency and will answer all the questions if you have any.

I am looking forward to see you soon!

p.s. I also need your help with naming my works. If you recognize the view I painted in the work attached to this post, please comment!

Bastardized Lobster Roll on Tap Today At Gloucester Gourmet

I don’t even know where to begin on this atrocity- and in our own back yard, a local.

I will say up front Anadama bread on it’s own- Fantastic.

For the love of christ, not on a lobster roll.  and then to add lettuce and celery??????

I see what you’re doing here Melissa Abbott, you’re trying to get inside my head.  You’re taunting me.  Saying I know how I’ll get Joey C to feature my blog on his site.  I’ll bastardize the one thing that there can not be any dispute about in an attempt to explode his brain.

It’s lobster, it’s tradition.  Why do we feel it necessary to mess it up.  Can’t we all agree that Andama bread is OUTSTANDING for French toast.  I’ll even go as far as to say it’s THE BEST bread on the planet for French Toast.  But please get that shit away from my lobster rolls.  It’s an outrage.  It’s an atrocity.  It’s unforgivable.

www.GloucesterGourmet.com ?  Uhm you may want to rethink the title of your new blog to www.GloucesterNoYouGourmet-not.com

I can’t go on.  I’ve got a headache.  People, want to let Melissa know what’s up here in this latest of all crimes committed against tradition and all that is good and sacred in the lobster world.

Look at this bullshit would you-

Lobster Salad Sandwich on Anadama Bread with Garden Red Leaf Lettuce

her ingredients-

Lobster Salad Recipe
Fresh Lobster Meat slightly chopped
Freshly chopped celery  FAIL
Cains Mayonnaise
Red Leaf Lettuse from my Garden FAIL

It’s simple people- The split top bun.  Not Baguette, Not a goddamn Panini, not a Saint Joseph’s roll and No, Not on Anadama bread.

A split top bun in which you slather on the butter and grill to a golden brown, then you add the cold lobstermeat mixed with a dollop of Cains mayo.  That’s it. Nothing green, no paprika, no celery, no onion, no pickle no other frou frou bananahead ingredients.

How many times do we have to go over this?

Don’t out-think tradition.  Don’t out-think perfection.  You’re gonna go and mess up the lobster roll’s good name because you’re jumping the shark on this, trust me.

Congratulations Melissa You Made It To The Big Time- A Feature On GMG

Just had to send a shout-out to ‘Local Colors’

If you are shopping for a unique or special gift, then ‘Local Colors’ is the place to visit.  Besides supporting local artists, you will come away with a special appreciation for their work, & of a quality shop with something for everyone’s taste.

I found some great earrings, made of tin — check them out there!  There are many types & styles.  One pair is more fun than the next!

And, we also purchased our daughter & son-in-law’s 6th anniversary gift — some beautiful photography of rocks at Good Harbor Beach — one of our & their favorite spots.

Bravo, ‘Local Colors!’  You are ‘top of the line’  — with original, beautiful artwork, & a classy, yet comfortable shop to browse & enjoy.

See you again!

Jazz Icons Celebrate Birthdays at the Rudder, Rocky Neck!

SS850077

Legendary jazz concert promoter Fred Taylor and publicity luminary Sue Auclair were feted at the Rudder Saturday night by local pals Ellyn Baltz and Block Party Block Heads Judith Brackley and Valerie Marcley.

Fred has produced everyone from John Coltrane to the Bobs Dylan and Marley. If you’ve seen a jazz concert in Boston, it was probably one of Fred’s. Throughout his lifelong commitment to music and breaking talent he has introduced us to Richard Prior, Earth Wind and Fire, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Pat Metheny and countless others at his respected jazz clubs, Pall’s Mall and the Jazz Workshop on Boylston Street – remember them? Sue works closely with Fred and for years with the Newport Jazz, Newport Folk, Boston Globe, Tanglewood Jazz and a billion festivals through her Sue Auclair Promotions. The talent these two have worked with – when will they write their books?

Miles Davis once acquiesced that Fred was hipper than he! Sue and Fred handled Miles’ comeback in 1981. Fred’s still producing concerts and is the Entertainment Director of Sculler’s Jazz Club in Allston, turning it into one of the top ten jazz clubs in America.

The lovable Freddy told jokes and did magic tricks to the delight of Rudder patrons. His entourage, always an assortment of adoring women, prompted one woman diner to say, "However old you are, you must be really special to be surrounded by so many beautiful women!" Fred and Sue love the Rudder and come up as often as their schedules allow, and agreed “It’s the tops!” for their dual birthday celebration.
