EJ Lefavour’s opening at Alchemy

On Thursday night, I joined the other GMG contributors, FOBs, local artists, friends, and passers-by at EJ’s show opening at Alchemy.  I got there right at the start.  Of course, EJ was there with her radiant smile, putting the last touches on things.

https://i0.wp.com/farm9.staticflickr.com/8200/8232924305_3a16a4fd3d.jpghttps://i0.wp.com/farm9.staticflickr.com/8480/8232923791_58af908463.jpg

Wine and munchies were served, with Alchemy’s usual aesthetic and culinary flair.

https://i0.wp.com/farm9.staticflickr.com/8066/8232924697_4d459aeeab_z.jpgThere was a good turnout of people, and EJ made a number of sales in the time I was there (including a print that I bought on the spot and another I ordered in a custom size…). Not surprising, given the beauty and uniqueness of her work.

Go down and check out the art! Maybe you’ll find just the right painting, photo or print to give to a family member or friend for Christmas.

Opening Night of Community and Identity

Last Saturday was the official opening of the “Community and Identity” show at the Rocky Neck Cultural center.  It’s quite a nice show, and well worth the visit!

The opening was very well attended, and the food – provided by curator Rocky Delforge’s mother – was absolutely amazing.  She could take up catering professionally, in my opinion.

But, back to the show itself.  A variety of artists are showing works related to the theme of the show, with a wide variety of approaches and media.  Give yourself time to contemplate them!  Community participation is also encouraged: there is a wooden lattice cube in the center of the room with cards inviting visitors to write or draw reactions to the exhibit or to questions and ideas on the front of the card.

Many of the artists were present, so I snapped photos of them with their work:

Curator/artist Rocky Delforge

Leon Doucette

Corinne Grant

John Swayze

Danny Diamond

John Sarkin. (I had autofocus on, and the camera went crazy trying to decide which face to focus on…)

The most beautiful thing at the show, though, was this little baby.  She was looking around at the art with the expression of a connoisseur as her mother carried her from place to place:

The Rocky Neck Cultural Center is easy to locate. It’s at 6 Wonson Street, and is quite distinctive:

It is in easy walking distance from the parking lot at the beginning of Rocky Neck – from which vantage point I took this panorama:

Opening night at The Cave!

Last night was the Grand Opening of The Cave – purveyors of fine wine, cheese, and chocolate at 44 Main Street in Gloucester.  GMG was well represented, so I am sure that other photos will appear on the blog, but here a few shots I took:

Because wine was being served, they had to check our ages at the door:

Alexander Thompson was on hand with some of his delectable tomato marmalade, which being sold on site:

It went really well with these crackers and cheese, but it’s also good on toast (I can vouch for that, having bought a jar a short time ago), and I’m sure it’s great in any other context where fruit spreads are used.

They also sell fig spread, local honey… “tastefully” arranged on the mantlepiece.

They have a variety of chocolate too, of course, as their tagline indicates:

Unlike the classic cheese shop sketch by Monty Python, this cheese shop is well stocked:

Plenty of wine also grace the shelves. I was told that the emphasis is on Italian wine, although there is also some from California.

There were lots of smiles from behind the counter…

…and in front as well, as the visitors enjoyed the samples of wine, cheese, chocolate, etc.

Among the visitors was Fred Bodin (at the right below), at whose shop I had sampled The Cave’s merchandise last week.

He got a good shot of me being carded at the door

New this year: More markets, more vendors, more fun

The Cape Ann Farmer’s Market has added to its season, starting one week earlier, and is planning two special indoor markets during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. New vendors this year are offering roasted nuts, herbs, homemade cheese, condiments and new additions to our prepared food vendors to take home or eat at a near-by picnic table. These, along with Cape Ann Farmer’s Market farm favorites, crafters and local food producers, make the market one of the largest in Massachusetts. Along with an extensive array of fresh produce through-out the season, vendors will be selling baked goods, gelato, fresh pasta, fish from Fisherman’s Wharf Seafood, local wines and locally roasted coffee. Back yard growers will be selling produce, eggs, maple syrup, desert sauces, salsa, and jams. Craft tents will offer organic soap, hand-made jewelry, pottery, hand-printed clothing and art made from recycled materials. A complete list of vendors and weekly schedules may be found on www.capeannfarmersmarket.org.

The Farmers Market is at Stage Fort Park, overlooking beautiful Gloucester Harbor, through the courtesy of the City of Gloucester. Parking fees will be suspended during market hours, so plentiful free and ample parking will be available to shoppers. A CATA bus will run from the Rose Baker Center on Rogers Street to Stage Fort Park by reservation.

The Cape Ann Farmers Market is an independent non-profit, mission-based organization, started by and for the community of Cape Ann, and sustained with one part-time paid employee. It is funded by vendor fees, memberships, donations and grants. Cape Ann Farmers Market sponsors a used cookbook and garden book table, and will be selling tote bags, aprons, t-shirts and memberships, which include discounts at local restaurants and specialty stores every week to help offset the costs of running the market.

The Cape Ann Farmers Market accepts WIC coupons, Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Coupons, and SNAP/EBT, expanding its mission to bring healthy food to the entire community.

Other: The Cape Ann Farmer’s Market includes a wellness tent where shoppers can relax with a therapeutic massage, and an education tent where local non-profits promote their organizations and services. Cooking demonstrations are a frequent and popular attraction, and children’s activities are organized by Art Haven every week at 4:15 under the children’s tent. Stage Fort Park has a playground to entertain children while parents shop, and grills are available so families can stay for a picnic dinner or a concert at the bandshell. Prepared food available this year for taking home or dining at the park include homemade pickles, guacamole made on-site, fresh salsa, tacos, burritos, lobster and crab rolls, grilled chicken and pulled pork, fresh homemade pizza, savory and sweet tarts, a wide variety of baked goods including gluten-free goodies and Lebanese flat bread. A special picnic night is being planned in late July.

Talent: Instead of piped-in supermarket Muzak, area musicians provide an original background soundtrack for shopping. Performances are during market hours, from 3:30 to 6:30, and feature sea shanties, folk, bluegrass, blues, jazz, and world music over the course of the summer.

Special Events: The Seafood Throw Down, a cooking contest and display by local chefs, will be held July 26 and August 23.

Artober Opening Photos At Bodin Historic Photo Covered By Fr Matthew Green

Good evening, Joey! I just got back from the Artober opening at Bodin Historic Photo.  It was great to meet Kathleen Miller, who is a wonderfully talented artist. Besides the paintings – which seem to glow with their own light – there was a great selection of photos and other art, and delicious wine and finger food, including some home-made strudel good enough to knock your socks off.
