YMCA 9th Annual Taste of Cape Ann at Cruiseport draws huge crowd

Who Brought the Magic for a great cause?
I don’t think that there are many individual YMCA or towns that could pull this fundraiser off so well. They don’t have Rick Doucette and the rest of the great staff in Gloucester or such a ridiculous abundance of local foodie establishments and culture. Here’s a list of Gloucester, Cape Ann and North Shore great eats and drinks establishments that participated this year:
1606 Restaurant, Beauport Hotel, Gloucester; Azorean Restaurant, Gloucester; Cake Ann, Gloucester; Cape Ann Brewing Company, Gloucester; Cape Ann Foodie Tours, Gloucester; Captain Carlos, Gloucester; Classic Cooks Catering, Gloucester; Feather & Wedge, Rockport; Ipswich Ale Brewery; Italiano Restaurant & Bar, Gloucester; Jalapeno’s Mexican Restaurant, Gloucester; Latitude 43, Gloucester; Liquor Locker Gloucester; Mile Marker One Gloucester; Mojo coffee Beverly Cape Ann Farmers Market; Mom’s Kitchen Gloucester; Passports Restaurant Gloucester; Pigeon Cove Ferments; Pigeon Cove Tavern & Emerson Inn By the Sea, Rockport; Riverwalk Brewing Company, Newburyport; Ryan & Wood Distilleries, Gloucester; Sea Glass Restaurant @ Castle Manor Inn, Gloucester; Seaport Grille, Gloucester; Stones Pub & Eatery, Gloucester; Sugar Magnolias, Gloucester; Virgilio’s Italian Bakery, Gloucester
Dazzling fine food, desserts and drinks were at every turn. Feather & Wedge, 1606 Restaurant, Mile Marker One, Classic Cooks, Azorean, Sea Glass Restaurant, and Sugar Mags served winning main dishes. To die for desserts and specialty drinks were abundant. Virgilios cannolis were gone fast!
photos: Great fun taking snapshots at all the booths. (Apologies to Liquor Locker! The only photo that didn’t come out.)
Live Entertainment – Jerome Music
Sounds of Taste of Cape Ann thanks to fine musicians were John Jerome on guitar and vocals, and Steve Jerome on drums. Cameron sat in as a back up drummer.
Wouldn’t happen without the 9th Annual Taste of Cape Ann generous sponsors:
Platinum Sponsors: Institution for Savings and Cruiseport Gloucester
Presenting Sponsors: Beauport Financial Services, Robert Stewart PC, Tom Davis CPA
plus all the participating restaurants, hotels, specialty food and liquor businesses, and local business support for all those gift basket raffles
Charlie’s Place Super Specials
Light touch, fried haddock Dinner Daily Super specials were flying out the take-out door, and to the steady stream of diners eating in. This time it was fish chowder for me and steak tips for my kids. Charlie’s Place 83 Bass Avenue Gloucester, MA (978) 281-5002 is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

When one door closes another door opens …peek inside the new Serenitee Restaurant Happy Belly opening summer 2017!
Reclaimed doors and wood everywhere
are just some of the featured and fitting design details coming into focus at Happy Belly, 3 Duncan Street, Gloucester, MA. The everyday casual restaurant will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. And small craft brew. And coffee. They’re roasting their own beans! What else? The floor’s been raised. A lengthy drink rail and counter stools gives one section a warm and chic soda-shop vibe. Nearby a massive antique metal lathe will be re-purposed into a showstopper pedestal table. The former Alchemy space is in its BEFORE stage as it undergoes a transformation by master builders, P Bevan Builders. They built Maggies Farm and other Serenitee Restaurant Group properties plus the recent renovation of the former Empire store.

Happy Belly along with Minglewood Tavern and Latitude 43 brings the Serenitee restaurant count back up to 3 happy and popular eateries in Gloucester, MA, each with its own lively aesthetic and yummy grub.
Happy to see Happy Belly coming soon!
Poll- With Giusepppes Closed What Kind Of Restaurant Would You Like To Fill That Space
I think the only void we have in the dining scene on Cape Ann is Indian Food. If you’ve been to Anmol in Beverly you know it’s really fantastic. If we could lure the owners of Anmol to open up in the space in the basement of the Blackburn Building that would be round out Gloucester’s dining menu.
What type of restaurant would you like to see there?
Edit: After thinking about this I’m not sure that we have a true Steak House here. That would be something that could add to our dining options. However with the crazy high price of good beef I’m not sure that we could support a real deal Steak House. We could have a place that serves steak obviously but to get real aged beef after you triple your food cost (how most restaurants come up with their pricing) I don’t think we have enough people having business meetings on company credit cards that don’t care that they are spending $40 for a steak and $100 bottle of wine. That’s big city stuff.
So I stand by my original choice of Indian food. Oh and for the people that have never tried Indian food, you’re really missing out. Anmol is a treasure for the people in Beverly.

LAST CALL for the Cape Ann Mobile App
I am coordinating the uptake of Points of Interest for the new mobile app across all 4 cultural districts (Essex, Rocky Neck, Rockport, Harbortown). To date very few Gloucester businesses and inns have entered their information. And only ONE downtown restaurant is entered!
We know that Gloucester is home to some amazing food and a wide variety of restaurants!!
- There is no fee to join the app – yet. It is grant funded for the first two years.
- Your business will be “pinned” to a Google map for visitors to see and contact you based upon your address
- Your business will have a “landing page” on the mobile app. Please keep your information brief and concise. It makes the download faster.
- You can have an image/logo/photo for your landing page, however it must conform to the following design specs: 240px H max x 600px W max (same format as a Facebook banner), 150 dpi.
- You can list up to 3 categories for your business. When visitors select a category like “Shopping and Antiques” businesses will appear based upon the proximity to the user, not alphabetically. Here are the categories:
- Arts + Galleries
- Attractions + Recreation
- Historic Sites + Museums
- Performances + Music
- Restaurants + Lodging
- Shopping + Antiques
- Services
Here is the link to add your business to the mobile app.

Lunch at Willow Rest
Everything they serve at Willow Rest is fresh and delicious. I went for their cheeseburger, my favorite. Friend Chris got the Cuban, and my mom got the best BLT she’s ever had in her 80+ years. Even our beloved Mayor loves to scoot over there from City Hall for lunch.
If you haven’t been to Willow Rest lately for breakfast or lunch, or to pick up some of their fresh baked goods, veggies or other goodies, stop in and enjoy.
