Award-winning, internationally acclaimed performers, Aubrey Atwater and Elwood Donnelly present captivating programs of traditional American and Celtic folk songs and percussive dance. Elwood and Aubrey blend gorgeous harmonies and play an astonishing array of instruments including guitar, Appalachian mountain dulcimer, mandolin, tin whistle, harmonica, banjo, limberjacks, and other surprises including a thrilling interpretation of freestyle Appalachian clog dancing. Married since 1989, Aubrey and Elwood have performed widely in the United States and abroad and their twelve recordings receive international airplay. Joining Aubrey and Elwood is Kevin Doyle, a delightful, compelling performer of old style traditional Irish step dance and American tap dance as well as percussion and vocals. A lifelong dancer, Kevin was a U.S. Champion Irish step dancer in his early competitive years, and has been entertaining audiences ever since with his traditional style of “close to the ground” rhythms and intricate foot work. Their performance is appealing to all ages, and with humor, audience participation, and a relaxed stage presence, Aubrey, Elwood, and Kevin explain song origins to give more relevance to the material. The music is western-themed, and it will be performed by a five-piece band. The drummer is a photographer by day, and he’s taken some beautiful pictures of dramatic scenes in the west. Photos are going to be projected as a sort of backdrop for the band.

I know the weather isn’t great but we are New Englanders so get out and enjoy some great music tonight before you do the whole Thanksgiving thing and the tryptophan kicks in.
Lots of parents take their kids to the Harbor Loop concerts and the Block Party and everybody has fun. Tomorrow (SUNDAY) is another great chance to get the kids out to hear music with 14 live shows starting between 11am and 7pm — and excellent evening shows to follow for those who, like us, keep the kids up late.
Music at Eden’s Edge (MEE), the North Shore’s resident chamber music ensemble, will present its June concert, A World at Our Fingertips, on Saturday June 22 at 8 pm the First Universalist Church of Essex as part of its 2013 Concert Series – MEE’s 32nd season of beautiful music. The program features the world premiere of Martin Boykan’s Viola Sonata, MEE’s New Music at the Edge for 2013, written for MEE’s violist Mark Berger, who will premiere this exciting piece with pianist Naoko Sugiyama. This performance is framed on one side by music of Mozart and Debussy, each work highlighting MEE performers, and on the other side by the passionate and exuberant Brahms G Minor Piano Quartet.

About Martin Boykan and MEE’s New Music at the Edge
Since 1992, MEE has frequently commissioned and premiered new works as part of its mission, making official its commitment to support and encourage the performance and creation of new music. MEE’s New Music at the Edge for 2013 will be presented in June, with the world premiere of Martin Boykan’s Sonata for Viola and Piano, written for Mark Berger, MEE violist and composer, who will perform this work.
Widely regarded as one of America ’s important classical composers, Martin Boykan is well known for his chamber music as well as compositions for larger ensembles, song cycles for voice and piano, and choral music, and has written for a wide variety of instrumental combinations. He studied composition with Aaron Copland, Paul Hindemith, Walter Piston, and piano with Eduard Steuermann. A Professor Emeritus of Music at Brandeis University , he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters, New York City , in 2011.
