Who Brought the Magic for a great cause?

I don’t think that there are many individual YMCA or towns that could pull this fundraiser off so well. They don’t have Rick Doucette and the rest of the great staff in Gloucester or such a ridiculous abundance of local foodie establishments and culture. Here’s a list of Gloucester, Cape Ann and North Shore great eats and drinks establishments that participated this year:

1606 Restaurant, Beauport Hotel, Gloucester; Azorean Restaurant, Gloucester; Cake Ann, Gloucester; Cape Ann Brewing Company, Gloucester; Cape Ann Foodie Tours, Gloucester; Captain Carlos, Gloucester; Classic Cooks Catering, Gloucester; Feather & Wedge, Rockport; Ipswich Ale Brewery; Italiano Restaurant & Bar, Gloucester; Jalapeno’s Mexican Restaurant, Gloucester; Latitude 43, Gloucester; Liquor Locker Gloucester; Mile Marker One Gloucester; Mojo coffee Beverly Cape Ann Farmers Market; Mom’s Kitchen Gloucester; Passports Restaurant Gloucester; Pigeon Cove Ferments; Pigeon Cove Tavern & Emerson Inn By the Sea, Rockport; Riverwalk Brewing Company, Newburyport; Ryan & Wood Distilleries, Gloucester; Sea Glass Restaurant @ Castle Manor Inn, Gloucester; Seaport Grille, Gloucester; Stones Pub & Eatery, Gloucester; Sugar Magnolias, Gloucester; Virgilio’s Italian Bakery, Gloucester

Dazzling fine food, desserts and drinks were at every turn. Feather & Wedge, 1606 Restaurant, Mile Marker One, Classic Cooks, Azorean, Sea Glass Restaurant, and Sugar Mags served winning main dishes. To die for desserts and specialty drinks were abundant. Virgilios cannolis were gone fast!

photos: Great fun taking snapshots at all the booths. (Apologies to Liquor Locker! The only photo that didn’t come out.)

Live Entertainment – Jerome Music

Sounds of Taste of Cape Ann thanks to fine musicians were John Jerome on guitar and vocals, and Steve Jerome on drums. Cameron sat in as a back up drummer.

Wouldn’t happen without the 9th Annual Taste of Cape Ann generous sponsors:

Platinum Sponsors: Institution for Savings and Cruiseport Gloucester

Presenting Sponsors: Beauport Financial Services, Robert Stewart PC, Tom Davis CPA

plus all the participating restaurants, hotels, specialty food and liquor businesses, and  local business support for all those gift basket raffles

6th grade Gloucester Day at O’Maley and community service

IMG_4579 (1)

I had a great time at O’Maley this week, presenting to 6th graders for “Gloucester Day”. For the past couple of years, I’ve spoken with classes about the HarborWalk because they study it at some point during the academic year. 6th graders are great and all (they were fantastic), but these O’Maley teachers make it seem effortless. Me? I bought cookies from Cafe Sicilia and Virgilios to hand out!  This year I ran into Tom Balf for Maritime Gloucester on the way in,  heard the teachers delight in seeing their former student, David Brooks for the Hive, back as a mentor, coach and leader. I caught some of Rick Doucette’s presentation because I heard the exclamations over YMCA summer camp and the 24 sleepless hours in a rocking chair fundraiser. Allison Cousins was heading into a class with Little Charlie Goes To Gloucester, a children’s picture book about poet Charles Olson by filmmaker Henri Ferrini and illustrated by Stefan Mallette. (It was also mentioned as it’s one of the links on the Olson marker for the HarborWalk and you can see it with other Cape Ann Reads published books.) This year, Gloucester day fell on National Teacher Appreciation Day. Every day could be National Teacher Appreciation Day.  Here’s the report from 6th grade social studies teacher, Jessica Haskell and her O’Maley colleagues:

On Tuesday, May 3rd, 6th grade students at O’Maley Innovation Middle School participated in “Gloucester Day” as part of an introduction to their end-of-the-year service projects.  Citizens who are active members of the Gloucester community volunteered their time and expertise to come in and teach students about organizations that work to make our community a better place.  Students were also introduced to ways in which they can personally get involved in these efforts through exploring and discovering their hometown, volunteering, participating in summer camps, and coming up with their own ideas.  Community mentors who attended were Catherine Ryan (HarborWalk), Rick Doucette (YMCA, Awesome Gloucester), Meghan Stratton (Backyard Growers), David Brooks (The HIVE), Tom Balf (Maritime Gloucester), Beth Klinefelter (The Open Door), and Allison Cousins (O’Maley Guidance).

Thanks for sending these photos and looking forward to hearing about the students’ projects!

Get better soon, Mr. Davis.

Oops, did you miss Mardi Gras? This year you’ve got a 2nd chance

Soooo …. you’re dealing with snow again today and you suddenly realize that Mardi Gras came and went yesterday without much thought on your part — you didn’t even go down to Lat 43 to support the YMCA Teens’ Service Learning Trips coming up this spring — yes, spring — I know you can’t even imagine spring, but it will come.  Trust me.

YMCA Teens at Larcom
Rick Doucette with the Y teens on the Larcom Theatre stage with Charles Neville, Amadee Castenell, Henri Smith and his band after last year’s Mardi Gras concert.

Don’t dispair.  You’ve got another chance to celebrate Mardi Gras AND support the YMCA Teens this Friday at the Larcom Theatre with Henri Smith and Charles Neville (of the Neville Brothers).  Melissa Cox will be there hosting a 50/50 raffle to support the Y Teens.  Get your concert tickets here and your raffle tickets at the theatre.  The music will be HOT.  The dancing even hotter — and you can contribute to a good cause, making you feel just great about having a good time!

Rick Doucette Just Turned Me On To The Dollar Shave Club

In light of my recent shaving disaster I’m taking my boy Rick Doucette’ (among other people’s) advice.  Literally 7 different people emailed me today telling me how much they dig the dollar saving club service.

Rick Says These Razors Are Great and They Ship You 4 New Blades Each Month for $6 Including Shipping and Handling.

image

What a handsome son of a gun the Rick Doucette is.

So for $72 a year I’ll get 48 Blades.  Way Less Than Gillette razors for the same quality shave.  I get to toss the blades once a week and use a fresshie.  They give you a free handle and if you don’t like the razors you simply quit without any obligation.  No Brainer city baby.

I ordered the middle of the line razors-

image

From the site-

How it Works

Are you ready to join the ranks of our enlightened membership?

Dollar Shave Club couldn’t be simpler. Select one of our great
razors, pay one low monthly fee, and we send ’em right to your
door. No more over-paying for fancy brand name shave tech.
No more forgetting to buy your blades.

Don’t be the dope like me that goes for the cheapo generic brand ones and cut the heck out of your face-

cuts

It’s $6 including shipping and handling.  Cheaper than any package of Gillette razors you can buy.  The Gillette comparable blades cost over $3 per blade.  I don’t see much risk in trying it out especially with the recommendation from Rick Doucette.

So if you want to try it out like me here’s the website-

FWIW I’m trying the wipes too. Nothing but the best for my butthole is what I always say.

O’Maley Innovation Middle School – New Pledge

O’Maley Innovative Middle School SAILS on with Pledge!

Oct. 1, the entire O’Maley community gathered in the auditorium for our first SAILS assembly of the school year. Rick Doucette, YMCA Executive Director and SAILS Community member volunteer, acted as Master of Ceremonies. Rick had the honor of revealing to all gathered the O’Maley pledge and led us all in the Pledges’ first public reading. Principal Deb Lucey was the first to sign and Rick followed as our first community member. After the assembly students returned to homerooms where each classroom has a poster of the pledge. Students were then asked to sign on!

The O’Maley community is now engaged with sharing the pledge with others and inviting them to sign on in support. On Oct. 9, while visiting our school Dr. Safier enthusiastically added his signature to our pledge while a group of 6th graders looked on with pride.

Last Spring, as part of the O’Maley School’s SAILS initiative, the whole school participated in an all school writing prompt. The prompt asked students to take a look at examples of pledges and then discuss what it means to make a pledge and commit yourself to it. Next the students were asked to make a list of what they think should be included in an O’Maley pledge.

The responses from the writing prompt were then given to a group of student editors, made up from volunteers from each grade, who then took on the task of narrowing down the broad categories and reworking these down to a manageable number reflecting values expressed by students that they would like to see in a pledge.

The final Pledge draft was presented and accepted. The beauty of the Pledge as written by the student editors needed no further work. The pledge speaks to all and ask of each what is theirs to give.

Rick Doucette on Easter Morning

If you were in church at 9am on Easter Sunday instead of listening to the radio, your reward is below: listen to a podcast of Aurelia Nelson’s interview, on her North Shore 104.9 show Curtain Up, with YMCA Teen & Camping Services Director, Rick Doucette and Christian O’Donnell, one of the teen leaders who is going on the New Orleans trip during April Vacation.

You can see a complete list of all teens going on the trip here.

It’s not too late to get tickets to Saturday’s Mardi Gras in April concert, that will help pay for the trip, featuring Henri Smith and Charles Neville at the historic Larcom Theatre in Beverly.  Here’s a video of these two New Orleans greats at Celebrate Gloucester in 2010.

Get tickets here and help local teens pay for their April Vacation service learning trip.

What are your kids doing this April Vacation?

NOLA-AirportFor the fourth year, Gloucester’s Rick Doucette, YMCA Teen & Camping Services director, is taking teens and chaperons from North Shore YMCAs to New Orleans during April Vacation to help people rebuild the City and even the Bayou — they plant trees as well as repair homes.

This trip works wonders on many levels: local teens are immersed in New Orleans culture; they feel the joy of having a profoundly positive impact on other people’s lives; they experience first-hand how working together builds a stronger community.

MardiGras2013_CabotAdMost kids goof off during April vacation.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m a firm believer in giving kids free-time to explore the world and become themselves.  But something vital touches me when I hear that 47 local teens are going to donate their vacation time to work hard on a construction site or in a swamp so that people 1500 miles away can have a better life.

That’s one reason why Vickie and I are producing a concert next Saturday, April 6, featuring New Orleans natives Henri Smith & Charles Neville to help raise money for this trip.  Last year, we sold out Minglewood Tavern on Mardi Gras, so we decided to take it to another level this year and host it at the historic Larcom Theatre in Beverly (more about that here).

You can still get tickets and there are even a few VIP packages left.  Get on-line tickets here or go to Gloucester Music.

Here’s a list of the adventurous teens who are going on the trip and the YMCA they belong to.  Let’s honor them by helping to raise money so their parents don’t have to pay for their kids to work during April Vacation.
