Gloucester’s Henri Smith returns to Beverly on August 19 after headlining last year’s wildly successful Beverly Block Party! For this summer’s Mardi-Gras themed concert at Beverly’s Vittori-Rocci hall, Henri welcomes Grammy-winners Charles Neville and Amadee Castenell with a special appearance by the New England Nevilles featuring Charles Neville with his two sons: keyboardist Khalif and drummer Talyn.

This concert features reserved seats (get them here) with plenty of room to dance in the aisles with Henri, the New England Nevilles and the whole band during the traditional Second Line.

Soooo …. you’re dealing with snow again today and you suddenly realize that Mardi Gras came and went yesterday without much thought on your part — you didn’t even go down to Lat 43 to support the YMCA Teens’ Service Learning Trips coming up this spring — yes, spring — I know you can’t even imagine spring, but it will come.  Trust me.

Well, here in frosty New England, it used to be just another Tuesday in the dead of winter.  But once Henri Smith moved to Gloucester (after Katrina blew is house down — see short bio here) we started celebrating Mardi Gras and now you have plenty of opportunities to celebrate on Cape Ann.  Here are a few:

Eat and drink at Lat43 and Minglewood from 11:30 – close today and 10% of what you spend goes to help send YMCA Teens on their service learning trips to New Orleans and the Navajo Nation.  Plus you can enter a raffle to win cool prizes (including 4 tickets to see Grammy-winner Charles Neville of the Neville Brothers with Henri Smith on Friday at The Larcom Theatre just down the road in Beverly).

Mardi-Gras-O-Ween with Henri Smith New Orleans Friends & Flavours at Cape Ann Brewery on Halloween night — that’s exactly 2 weeks from tonight (Thursday) at 8pm.

This will be fun blending of two great traditions.  A good time is guaranteed for all. Costumes are more than welcome.

Plus it’s a great way to get you psyched for Henri’s special Christmas concert at the fully restored, historic Larcom Theatre in Beverly on December 14.  Now, remember, as Fly Amero said (in this post) Beverly is NOT “up the line” it’s “virtually next-door … right down the street from us”.  Best of all, the Larcom is a gorgeous theatre with perfect sound.  The best seats are going fast, so get tickets here.

P&V’s LOL #12: Sometimes you just can’t blame anybody

(For those of you who have just tuned in, “LOL” stands for Law of Life.  Click here to see the first 11.)

Everybody’s looking for somebody to blame — especially for last night.  First there’s the power outage.  Even though the official line still makes vague reference to an “abnormality”, you can bet people are scrambling to nail somebody’s ass — or “hold them accountable” to use the latest PC term.

Then there’s Beyoncé.  Joey may have liked her lip-synched dance numbers, but Vickie and I have to agree with venerable music curmudgeon, Bob Lefsetz, who said, “I wasn’t sure what to do after Beyonce’s appearance, join a gym or masturbate.” (We know Joey’s done the former.  What about the latter, Joey?)

Lefsetz tries to blame Madonna, CDs, Hip Hop (read his full tirade here) and he lauds  Prince, Adele, Mumford & Sons and The Lumineers.  (Joey likes The Lumineers too.  See this post.  Their show tonight at House of Blues — yup, across the bridge — is sold out.)

Singers love to lay blame.  Usually they blame somebody else, like when Beyoncé admonishes “you should have put a ring on it.”  Once in a while somebody writes a great song blaming himself.  Of those, my favorite is Guilty by Randy Newman, sung here perfectly by Bonnie Raitt.

You’ll be blaming yourself big time if you don’t get VIP tickets to see Henri Smith featuring Charles Neville this Friday.  It’s the best dinner / show / Mardi Gras party deal around.  Best of all, you can avoid feeling guilty because you’ll be helping to send local YMCA Teens on their service-learning trip to New Orleans in April.  Oh, and Henri won’t be lip-synching.

The older I get the more I realize that casting blame feels good, but doesn’t accomplish much — sort of like masturbating.

Blame is best left to songs.  Chelsea Berry knows how to write a great song that lays blame.  And you can bet she won’t lip-synch when she sings it at her  Shalin Liu concerts.

4th Annual Mardi Gras Fundraiser to Support YMCA Teens Service Mission to New Orleans

4th Annual Mardi Gras Fundraiser

Teen Leaders from across the North Shore YMCA Service area will make their 4th trip to New Orleans, Louisiana to assist in rebuilding efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina disaster.  Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans on August 29, 2005. and though many years have passed since Katrina destroyed most of New Orleans and its neighboring communities, there’s still work to be done to bring this area back to “normal”.
 
“The devastation is vast, even years later”, explains Rick Doucette, Executive Director of Teen and Camp Services at the Cape Ann YMCA.  “This is a tremendous opportunity for local teens to help make a profound and lasting difference in the lives of people who so desperately need a helping hand.”   Travel, lodging and meal expenses are estimated at $1,100 per youth.  Our hope is to fully fund each teen’s trip through a collaborative effort with local donors and businesses doing events over the next couple months.  The Latitude 43 event is in its 4th year, and, like the trip itself, and has become a high point of our year; kicking off our fundraising efforts in preparation for the trip.”
 
“The event has been a big success for the teens raising travel money in past years. And it’s become a very important part of our connection to the community”, said Zak Sears, General Manager of Latitude 43 and Minglewood Tavern.  “Even our music this year is locally based and totally donated. The guys from The Runaround are my friends and a few are my cousins.  So when I asked them to help out, they agreed without hesitation.  This is Gloucester”.
 
The teen participants are involved in the preparations as much as they are the actual mission.  Dressed in Mardi Gras costumes, handing out beads and selling raffle tickets the night of is only part of their commitment to the success of their trip. Teens are credited for all of the in-kind (raffle item) donations they secure for the event.
 
“We believe this should be a team effort, and that the kids learn as much from having to work for their trip as they do in actually going to New Orleans,” Doucette explains.  “And by soliciting their own raffle items, they are reaching out within their own circles to build awareness for the trip and for the importance of our work in Louisiana.  These teens really get so much throughout the process to the end of the journey; their feedback in our Trip Reflections always show amazing insight and gratitude.”

This year, a second Mardi Gras Themed event has been added to raise more funds as the participant list has grown with the inclusion of the other North Shore Y Teen Groups – a concert at the historic Larcom Theater in Beverly featuring Henri Smith and Charles Neville on February 8th , with  50% of ticket sales donated to the trip.

Charles Neville is a Grammy winner and Henri Smith is both an incredible entertainer and a New Orleans native. The theater is a piece of history and the night will be one to remember. Tickets available through http://www.gimmesound.com

As you can see in the picture, when Aurelia Nelson and Henri Smith get together everybody has fun.

Aurelia decided to reprise last week’s Curtain Up again tomorrow SUN at 9am.  Don’t miss it this time.  Set your alarm and tune into 104.9FM.

Then at 6pm you can catch the very first Local Music Seen with Allen Estes show filmed on location.

Last Mardi Gras (2/21/12) after a brief studio intro, we took the cameras and crew to Minglewood Tavern  to film Henri Smith’s excellent band featuring Charles Neville at a Mardi Gras fundraiser for the Y Teens Rebuild New Orleans trip.  The result is a high energy concert and interview with Henri Smith and Charles Neville in Latitude 43’s super comfy lounge area.  This special show airs tomorrow (SUN) at 6pm on Cape Ann TV Channel 12 and again WED 2/6 at 6:30pm

Something Big that Chronicle Missed

Gloucester has been featured on Chronicle once again and this time they focus on tourism, art, fishing & Fiesta — mostly the greasy pole.  And while the show sheds a fairly good light on Gloucester, it misses one of the our City’s main attractions  — Gloucester’s burgeoning music scene (see tonight’s live music lineup here).

That’s why we’re so lucky to have lured T Max here — publisher of The Noise (New England’s longest running music magazine).  The new issue features stories about music on Cape Ann as well as music on that shark-infested cape named after a fish.  (On the web, the stories are after the features on Brad Byrd from Cape Ann and The Parkington Sisters from Cape Cod).

I was going to thank T Max for the honor of being chosen to write the story about Cape Ann (read it here), but instead I’ll  complain that what I had feared has come to pass: good musicians whom I neglected to mention are asking me why I left them out.  There’s no good answer to that question.  My only excuse is that with limited space and time to write I simply couldn’t include everyone who’s good.  Lame, isn’t it.  Sorry.

Perhaps the next Chronicle story on Gloucester will include at least one segment on Gloucester’s music.  I keep that hope alive given that they referred to Fiesta as Gloucester’s own Mardi Gras, which is, of course, a musical metaphor.

Local Music Seen ~ first ever show on location!

On Mardi Gras, Local Music Seen with Allen Estes went to Minglewood to shoot the sold out Mardi Gras on Rogers Street benefit for Y Teens Rebuild New Orleans.  It took some time to edit all the footage and create a good show, but with the help of Cape Ann TV’s master director and editor, Lisa Smith, we finally got it done and the show airs TONIGHT at 6:30pm on Cable Channel 12.

In this video, you’ll see the complete (un-cut) version of Henri’s studio interview with Allen and a very unusual performance of Henri singing Route 66 accompanied by Allen on Guitar and harmonica.  If you want to see the Mardi Gras footage, you’ll have to watch the show (we’ll put this show in the archives soon for those of you who don’t live on Cape Ann or don’t have cable.  You’ll be able to find it here.)

After a nice hot day, you’ll want to cool off tonight at any of the six air-conditioned venues with great live music.  See the cool live music lineup here.

A: Charles Neville’s Mardi Gras Indian tribe.  In this video, Henri Smith talks about bringing Charles Neville to Gloucester on Tuesday for Mardi Gras.

The video has some of the traditional New Orleans Mardi Gras Indian music you’ll here as part of their concert to help raise money to send local teens to New Orleans for the third year of their service-learning trip led by Rick Doucette.

Show starts at 7:30pm at Minglewood Tavern (the front of Latitude 43).  Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door.  Seating is limited.  Call 978-281-0223 for tickets.
