Key to Gloucester City Hall’s City Council in Session 1937 New Deal mural by Charles Allan Winter

The Committee for the Arts is excited to share new “in situ” photographs of Gloucester ’s City Hall murals by noted architectural photographer, Chuck Choi.

Here’s one featuring Charles Allan Winter’s City Council in Session in the lobby of City Hall (don’t miss our killer ship chandeliers!);

followed by a photo zoomed in to show all 34 figures

followed by a photo of the framed “key” that his installed below the mural, just above the collectors’ windows—more to follow on the key!

There was media coverage in the 1930s for the murals as they were completed, and many times since then. Here’s a fun one: In 1972 Senator William L. Saltonstall (Manchester resident and member of the Massachusetts Senate from 1967-1979) enlisted the help of media to announce a contest to help identify the portraits in some of Charles Allan Winter’s New Deal murals within Gloucester ’s City Hall. The Cape Ann VF insert published a photograph of the Winter mural in Kyrouz Auditorium, The Founding of Gloucester, with the caption: “Senator Saltonstall is offering dinner for two at a Gloucester restaurant to the first person to identify the most real people in the mural painting above.”

March Nor’easter, Long Beach, 1958

A massive storm barreled up the East Coast from March 18th to 21st,1958, impacting the East Coast from North Carolina to Maine. It was a Category 2 storm, which means it was “significant.” In addition to high winds, waves, and surge, it also brought snow. On Cape Ann, the concrete boardwalk on Long Beach was destroyed, and houses were damaged. These photos are courtesy of Eloise Como Brown.

Celebrating Gloucester’s Gabriel, Sylvester “Hooley” Ahola

In March, Gloucester will be celebrating the life and music of our own world famous trumpeter.  Two events will be held at the Lanesville Community Center, located at 8 Vulcan St. and once the Ahola family’s dairy barn.

·    Sunday March 10,  1:30 – 4:00,  “Hooley’s Place in Jazz History” 
Come listen to his wonderful music, and stories by people who knew and played with him, and enjoy photos, displays and some of his home movies from the 30’s.  The event is free and open to the public, donations welcomed.  Join us for coffee and nisu.

·    Saturday, March 23, from 8-11,  dance and stomp to Hooley’s  music played live by the 7 piece jazz and swing band The Seacoast Stompers. Beer and wine will be on sale.  Tickets are $10 in advance and available at Gloucester Music and the Plum Cove Grind in Lanesville,  or $12 at the door.

·    And, during the month of March, the Cape Ann Museum at 27 Pleasant St. will be celebrating Hooley with an exhibit from their archives.

Celebrating 850 years of existence this year is Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. We too are celebrating with our 150th anniversary of St. John’s Church! Please join us for popcorn, cartoons and fun as we have Peter Krasinski back for his 10th appearance for Hunchback!

rikkyoSunday afternoon at 4 pm 13 students from the Organist Guild of Rikkyo University in Japan will play a recital featuring music by Vaughan Williams, Widor, Franck, Mendelssohn, Howells and Liszt. These students are also visiting C.B. Fisk, Gloucester’s “Organbuilders to the world” to view a new instrument for the chapel at Rikkyo. St. John’s is home to an earlier Fisk organ nearly 25 years old, Opus 97. There is no charge for this program, you are invited!

The Fisk shop is hosting an open house for the Rikkyo instrument, Opus 141, on Saturday, March 9 from 2-6 pm at their shop. The public is welcome. Click here for more information.

The Students and several faculty members will join with the congregation at St. John’s for the 10:30 am Sunday worship service at 10:30 am on March 10 where the Chaplain of the University will read the Gospel in Japanese, and the University Organist Yuko Sakiyama will play the organ pieces before and after the service. Rikkyo University was founded by the American Episcopal Bishop Channing Moore Williams in 1896. The public is welcome to join us for this service.

The O’Maley Innovation Middle School’s Performing Arts Department cordially invites members of the Cape Ann Community to attend our upcoming production of Disney’s Little Mermaid Junior.

Since September, our cast and crew of almost one hundred 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students have been rehearsing twice every week after school.  You will be inspired by the talent and exuberance radiating from these young performers singing, dancing, and acting out this popular and heartwarming story.   Performing Arts classes during O’Maley’s school day focus on developing students’ 21st Century Skills and Common Core mastery through an interdisciplinary, project-based curriculum that utilizes the mediums of Theater, Music and Dance. This production is an excellent showcase of our department’s extra-curricular offerings, which focus on developing standards in the disciplines of Music (Chorus), Dance, and Theatre within a performance setting.

Join Debbie and her band for “Story Songs and Sing Alongs”.  Get ready for some sing-along, dance-along, laugh-along family fun in this rockin’ musical journey through classic kids’ tales and original songs!

Debbie and Friends concerts are fun for the whole family.  Parents and kids join in this interactive “variety show,” which includes a diverse array of styles including rock, pop, country, reggae, and Broadway-esque tunes.  You’ll become the Big Bad Wolf and blow the house down, fix Rosie’s wrong rhymes, test your skills with the Simon Sez Song, and share a special moment with your loved ones singing “Love Is a Family.”

This full-band performance will include both Debbie and Friends songs and some classic favorites, with a cast of top-shelf musicians from Berklee College of Music, including Debbie Cavalier vocals and keyboard, Rory McKenzie on bass, Eric Saulnier on guitar, Bill D’Agostino on drums, Mike Carrera on vocals and crazy character voices, including the “wolf”… and surprise guest performers!

Debbie is former West Parish School music teacher Debbie Cavalier, and Debbie’s bass player is Gloucester’s own Rory McKenzie.  The Debbie and Friends web site is http://debbieandfriends.net.

Oyama Magnolia Bud (Magnolia sieboldii)

The Oyama Magnolia is often planted adjacent to tea gardens in Japan because the blossom of the small tree nods downward, allowing the seated person to look up into the face of the flower. The first time I  saw (or should say smelled) Magnolia sieboldii was in a wholesale nursery close to the Rhode Island border, where a single large specimen was tucked in with other more common species of magnolia. The divine fragrance emanating from the tree had drawn me towards it. The tree was unmarked, but since I so strongly value fragrance in plants, I had read about it and knew exactly what it was. Spring had not yet sprung in Gloucester and the honeysuckle sweet and citrus fragrance was intoxicating to my winter weary brain. I tied my tag around to claim it and have adored this tree since the day our Oyama Magnolia arrived to our garden.

Chelsea Berry & Dawn Mitschele: Songwriters’ Circle ~ March 27

Presented by Single Tree Music and The Historic Manchester Trust, this intimate Wednesday evening performance at Manchester by the Sea’s Crowell Chapel will feature two incredible songwriters performing original material, side-by-side and sharing the stories behind the songs.This will be a unique opportunity for the audience to engage the musicians and gain an intimate understanding of where the inspiration for the music came from.Special opening appearance by Manchester’s Alexandra Valenti.Doors open at 6:30pm. Show starts at 7:30pm.

Tickets are $20.00 each and are general admission OR guests may select to purchase a full pew (bench) in the Chapel which will seat up to 6 to 7 guests for $120.00. Pews will be reserved on a first ordered, first reserved basis from the front of the chapel to the rear.

DAWN MITSCHELE
Best known for her angelic vocals and smooth acoustic style, singer/songwriter Dawn Mitschele (pronounced MITCH-eh-LEE) is making her mark on San Diego music, while drawing a wide range of fans across the US and Europe.

Her latest five-song EP, “Love Remains” (May 2012 release) has already received airplay on Santa Monica’s KCRW as well as hometown stations KPRI and 91X, and the song “Lamplighter” was picked up by the nationally syndicated radio show, “Acoustic Cafe.”

TV shows Justified, 666 Park Blvd and Elementary have placed songs from Dawn’s “Love Remains” EP and her “In the Moonlight” album. Her voice can also be heard in the feature films “10 years” and “Liberal Arts.”

Therefore, allow me to introduce Mr. John Keegan™, erstwhile leader of “Madhouse”, blues cheerleader,stage manager, and all around general mucky muck. He’s gonna grab your earlobes and twist them into submission, make you scream and cry. You’ll lose 10 lbs. in 3 hours or double Fred’s money back!
