Opening Night of Community and Identity

Last Saturday was the official opening of the “Community and Identity” show at the Rocky Neck Cultural center.  It’s quite a nice show, and well worth the visit!

The opening was very well attended, and the food – provided by curator Rocky Delforge’s mother – was absolutely amazing.  She could take up catering professionally, in my opinion.

But, back to the show itself.  A variety of artists are showing works related to the theme of the show, with a wide variety of approaches and media.  Give yourself time to contemplate them!  Community participation is also encouraged: there is a wooden lattice cube in the center of the room with cards inviting visitors to write or draw reactions to the exhibit or to questions and ideas on the front of the card.

Many of the artists were present, so I snapped photos of them with their work:

Curator/artist Rocky Delforge
Leon Doucette
Corinne Grant
John Swayze
Danny Diamond
John Sarkin. (I had autofocus on, and the camera went crazy trying to decide which face to focus on…)

The most beautiful thing at the show, though, was this little baby.  She was looking around at the art with the expression of a connoisseur as her mother carried her from place to place:

The Rocky Neck Cultural Center is easy to locate. It’s at 6 Wonson Street, and is quite distinctive:

It is in easy walking distance from the parking lot at the beginning of Rocky Neck – from which vantage point I took this panorama:

Lou Holtz Quote of The Week From Greg Bover

September 7, 2012

“Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it.”

Lou Holtz (1937-    )

Best known as a football coach and motivational speaker, Holtz is a West Virginia native who had a brief career as a player at Kent State. He held head coaching positions at six different academic institutions and compiled a 249-132-7 record. Although hired by Notre Dame with a lifetime contract, it is rumored that he was forced to retire before he broke Knute Rockne’s record of 105 wins with that team.

Here is an opportunity to do something wonderful for your dog and yourself. On Sunday, September 30, from 3-4:15 PM, I am offering an introductory session on Canine Massage called “The ABC’s of Canine Massage”. The cost is $15

If your answer to the following list of questions is a rousing YES, then I think you will get a lot from this session

-    Would you like to develop a deeper bond with your dog?
-    Would you enjoy an activity in which your whole family becomes more involved with your dog?
-    Would you wish to have an all-new way to connect, pay attention and express affection to your dog?
-    Would you love to be able to detect any changes in your dog’s health very early in the process?
-    Would you like your dog to be more receptive to touch, and easier to handle at veterinary visits?
-    Would it make you happy to help your older dog with her / his stiffness or arthritis?
-    Do you enjoy seeing your dog in a blissed out happy state?
-    Would you simply like your dogs to relax her / his muscles and de-stress?
-    Would you like to learn new skills that allow you to be creative with your touch?

If there is sufficient interest after this introductory session, I will consider offering a four session course that will help you become even more comfortable and confident in massaging your own dog. I have already done this at several other places with excellent results. There is always a “getting to know you” period at the beginning of these sessions and then the dogs tend to settle in and really enjoy themselves. If you are interested or have questions, please respond to me by email because space is limited.

Uhmmmm The World’s Greatest Lobster Roll Just Got Even Better By Subtraction. You Heard Me- Subtraction.

2012-09-08 19.47.10

You’ve heard me rail on about the world’s greatest lobster roll for four years now.

We’ve dismantled countless frou frou high brow chefs and food bloggers who couldn’t leave perfection alone and had to go and mess up the perfect lobster roll with such atrocious ingredients as paprika, celery, lettuce, relish onion, pickles, avocado and such ridiculous platforms for rolls such as French baguette rolls and anadama bread.

Yu can read about all those abortions these dopes tried to pass off as lobster rolls here-

But what I’m about to tell you is going to turn a lot of what I’m saying on it’s head I guess.  Or another way to look at it is actually more accurate in that as I’ve told you from the beginning- that simplicity and not overthinking the lobster roll and it’s perfection is the way to go so simplifying in the way I’m going to explain actually falls right inline with what I’ve been saying.

Night before last the Mrs asks me to bring home some lobster so she can make lobster rolls.  She tells me she wants to try something different than her traditional recipe.

I brought home 5 lbs of medium shell lobster and she made two lobster rolls based off her original recipe-

Ingredients For The Worlds Greatest Lobster Roll

Posted on April 28, 2008 by Joey C

Ingredients For The Worlds Greatest Lobster Roll, originally uploaded by captjoe06.

Has to be Cains mayo, and hot dog rolls so you can grill them to a golden brown with the unsalted butter.

Notice there is no lettuce, paprika, celery or any other filler. If anything else appears in your lobster roll, you have an inferior lobster roll.

steam the lobsters and shuck the meat

tear the meat into 1/2 inch chunks or so and mix with cains mayo

refrigerate

once lobster and mayo is chilled, butter each side of cheap hot dog rolls (the kind you tear apart)

you do not want to use any goddamn baguette or crusty overpowering roll

you want white bread tear apart soft hot dog rolls

once you butter the sides of the hot dog rolls with SALTED butter you pan brown the roll so its warm and golden brown

just barely browned but the roll should still be very soft

then load up your cool lobster/mayo filling into the warm soft buttery roll and you have yourself the perfect lobster roll

note- NO  LETTUCE- NO  CELERY-NO  PAPRIKA- NO FANCY CRUSTY FRENCH ROLL

I’m here to tell you that there is an upgrade to this and it is by simplifying.

Leave out the mayo and serve with hot drawn salted butter drizzled over the top of the cooked lobster meat inside the grilled buttered bun.

It actually intensifies the taste of the lobster instead of masking a bit of it with the mayo.

It’s now the official recipe of the World’s Greatest Lobster Roll.

Update: Sold. New Good Harbor Beach Footbridge At Dawn Canvas Wrap Just In

The last one sold in minutes so I decided to have another one made.

Let me know at goodmorninggloucester@yahoo.com $120 and $16 if it needs to be shipped in the continental US.

Craig and Helen Whitney Have Some Nice Things To Say

My wife and I really enjoyed last night’s Nights on the Neck at the Rocky Neck Art Colony and noted to a couple of artists that, after growing up and living on the North Shore our whole lives, we have never been to Rocky Neck before. Gotta be among the North Shore’s best kept secrets! So as one artist suggested, we found and will now read GMG.

We especially enjoyed listening to the Julie Dukas Jazz Trio at the Madfish Wharf (also mojitos at the Madfish Grille). We remarked that they should have their CDs for sale, and were amazed to find online this am that they apparently don’t have any CDs. Too bad as we would love to buy them!

Great place and great program last night overall.

Another banner musical week on Cape Ann

Last week we told you about Marina Evans‘ new release (see post here).  Well she’s got another one this week, next week and the week after (check this link for new songs each week).  Plus she’s got a parallel project going on in Italy, which she plans to release in October.  And you can see her at the Block Party on Saturday  (full Block Party lineup coming soon).  Busy Woman!

I caught Marina last night just before her set at the Rhumb Line.  Here’s part 1 of that interview.  More fun video and a couple of surprises from Marina coming later this week.

But no need to wait for the Block Party.  There’s plenty going on all week.  Remember Rob Newton’s FALL INTO THE RHYTHM movie/music celebration at Cape Ann Community Cinema starts tomorrow with LA CENERENTOLA  and features The Cowsills on Thursday (more about that here).

Check the week’s full music lineup here.
