College Sports Soccer signing! Robert Mugabe Kansas City Christian College #GloucesterMA athlete

Education and soccer are important to Robert Mugabe, a former Gloucester athlete finding his way to higher education and a soccer team. After taking a gap year last year to sort through some recruiting options, one of the college coaches that was most impactful and circled back to support and encourage him was in Kansas.

Mugabe is excited to announce that he signed with Kansas Christian College DII which competes in the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCCAA). He is thrilled to begin this new chapter.

“This morning I had my second college practice. School starts on Monday. The first game is August 30th: Kansas Christian College VS. Bethany Swedes.”

photo: School/college signing. Mugabe is second on the left. Also signing that day, the taller young man in the center, Adam, who is a goalie.

UPDATE: Follow the KCC Falcon team Facebook page which provides links for live watching each game

Mugabe will play up for the Falcons wearing #22 as he did for Gloucester High School varsity soccer, Cape Ann United, club teams, and Fisherman Youth in middle school. One of the perennial leading scorers, his speed, skills, strength and drive will take him far.

Good luck to Robert and the Falcons!

Sports Film Review

excerpt from review of “Colin in Black and White” directed by Ava DuVernay:

“…The drama then transitions to Kaepernick talking about his idol, Allen Iverson. At a young age Kaepernick wanted to have cornrows like Iverson but after many people compared him to a “thug,” and called him “unprofessional,” he deferred. In the show, Kaepernick expressed that cornrows represented the culture in his blood and that it was unfair how he was profiled.

An extensive part of the drama depicts Kaepernick’s choice between football and baseball. Kaepernick was talented and gifted in many sports but his best sport could have arguably been…”

Today’s paper: sports writer Nick Curcuru summarizes the 7 Cape Ann high school teams ready for tournament time

“The regular season is officially over for Cape Ann high school sports teams, and seven of the top teams in the area have survived to earn the right to compete for a state championship in the state tournament.” Read Nick Curcuru coverage of the upcoming division competitions illustrated with  photos by Jaime Campos and Paul Bilodeau here: “Sizing up Cape Ann’s State Tournament qualifying teams on HS Sports, Gloucester Daily Times, October 30, 2019. Beautiful New Balance Field / Newell Stadium and O’Maley grounds #GloucesterMA public schools

Wish my phone captured the surreal beauty of the fishing boats floating past the field goal, heading to the cut. Prettiest stadium for spectators in Massachusetts.

Picturesque setting and buffer slope designed like natural  amphitheater for the track and field at O’Maley. The track needs work and the field needs filling/leveling of some troubling holes. To left out of field of view: ball fields and booster funded snack bar shed and restrooms (could be open – gross to see teams head to the trees straight from the bus)

Elementary school campuses are lovely, too. Snapshots of a few:

Inspired by ROTC, there will be a telethon cookie dough booster fundraiser for the GHS boys basketball team on December 10, 2018 from 4-6pm. Team players will speed dial for one hour to try to sell as much cookie dough as possible in that time. Fundraising goes back into the program to assist with the banquet and maybe some swag. Please email Rosa if you’d like to be added to the ‘cookie call list’ December 10th to help support the team. Rosa has helped GHS sports teams for years. Maybe this year the kids will get some team spirit sweatshirts or gear.

GHS boys soccer banquet at the Elks at Bass Rocks and booster raffle winners

Beautiful event January 3 sponsored by the GHS boys soccer boosters, with delicious food from the Causeway and great soccer swag! Graduating seniors acknowledged their amazing play off and final soccer year as bittersweet. Congratulations to the players and coaches and thanks to the parent volunteers, especially Chris Mac. Coaches for three teams are: Armando Marnoto, Drew Sidell, Marcus Trejo, and Jason Rutkauskus.

From Nick Curcuru Nov 6 article in the Gloucester Daily Times:  “Gloucester finishes up the season at 12-5-2, its highest win total and deepest postseason run since 2007, when the team advanced to the Division 1 North Quarterfinals with an identical 12 wins. Despite the tough ending, Marnoto had nothing but positive things to say about his squad. “This is a special group, one of my favorites and they were a pleasure to coach,” he said. “I’m really happy with the season these boys put out. These seniors took their lumps when they were freshmen and kept improving to end up as one of the final eight teams in the bracket.- Gloucester Daily Times]
