Month: February 2012
Greg Bover Represents! In California
Hey Joey,
Here I am on a ranch up in the hills above Palo Alto; that’s San Francisco Bay in the background. It was seventy today.
I’m here with my crew removing an organ we made in 1987 for a gentleman who built a concert hall as an addition to his house. He was a great guy, we had good times while working here, but he died a couple of years ago. His widow asked C. B. Fisk, Inc. to find a good home for the instrument, and we did. The three-manual, 45 stop organ, with 2,838 pipes, will be going to Indiana University, which has one of the finest organ departments in the country. But first we have to dismantle it completely, pack all 15 tons of it with great care into two 53 foot moving vans and then ship it to Bloomington. About a month’s work for six of us. Some time next year when IU finishes modifications to Alumni Hall, we’ll put it all back together again. (I have a great job.)
There’s more info about the organ and a portrait at http://www.cbfisk.com/do/DisplayInstrument/instId/91.
Regards, Greg

Dennis Flavin art bio/editorial
Born in Western, Massachusetts in 1950, Dennis Flavin became intrigued with art at a young age and began actively pursuing his dream to be an artist beginning in high school. Enrolling himself in as many art classes as was allowed, Dennis quickly became good friends with the art teachers and at age 17, he was teaching jewelry making classes for parents in the evening.
Dennis went on to attend Vesper George Art School, a small Boston college that taught exclusively art. It was here where he decided he wanted to be a painter instead of his previous plan to be an art teacher.
“I’ve always felt, if I have an idea on a canvas, I can paint that idea as long as I let myself be free with color and lines”
Dennis first came to Gloucester on an art scholarship from a professor/friend to paint during the summer of 1970. After marrying, Dennis brought his bride to Gloucester where they have remained residents for over 35 years.
Many people know Dennis as a charismatic restaurant owner; some know him as a fine artist; but few have seen the wide range of artwork he has compiled over a span of 40 years.
“I knew I was going to be a painter, but I knew I wanted to have a family. I always painted, worked, and tried to spend time with my family. It was a lot to do at one time. No matter what I did, I couldn’t stop painting. I always had an art studio and I squeezed in as much time as I could to be in it, working.”
Now, the artwork of Dennis is leaving his studio and going on display in the up and coming Taste O’ Sea Gallery located on 33 Main Street (inspired by a popular Flavin monotype).
March 16th (5-8pm) will mark the Grand Opening of both The Taste O’ Sea Gallery and the first of two exhibits featuring the art of Dennis Flavin. The gallery will host art in a variety of mediums ranging from monotype and etching prints to pastel and mixed media. From March 23rd through the end of the month, the artwork will be switched to feature Flavin’s oil paintings shown “in the rough” (unframed).

More about Depression Era Quilts
Depression Era Butterfly Quilt Top
Reader Sandra G recently wrote: Thank you for Sharing the Antennae For Design Article and Photo. I recently acquired a Vintage Butterfly Quilt Top*, that has me puzzled as to what the fabrics are and dating it ? The Butterflies appear to be very similar to your Photo. I am clueless about this Quilt Top and any help would be greatly appreciated. You have a great Website and Blog!
I asked her to send photos and she did send several. I do think this is a Depression era quilt for several reasons. The red butterfly especially, with the cheery cherry printed over the red and white polka dot fabric, looks very 1930s-1940s. All the butterflies are hand-embroidered, which also leads me believe the top is from the Depression era. It’s really a charming quilt top, and beautifully made. I love the design placement of the butterflies. The colors are so vibrant–the finished quilt will make any room sing. What a great find Sandra G.!
* Note ~ a quilt top is just that; the top only. Quilt tops are a wonderful way to acquire a vintage quilt. For some reason or other, the quilt was never completed. Ideally the quilt top would have been tucked away and stored out of direct sunlight–just waiting for some industrious- type to complete the job! If stored properly, you’ll find the vintage fabrics in their original vibrant colors as sunlight and repeated washings are most damaging to textiles.
Just in case you missed it …
gimmesound Artist of the week: Allen Estes was one of the stars of Celebrate Gloucester 2010 at I4-C2 — and he was joined on stage by Fly Amero in a surprise appearance (Fly originally couldn’t play Celebrate Gloucester due to a scheduling conflict) for one of Allen’s most popular songs, Not With Ya Hands about Gloucester legend Howard Blackburn.
Their inspiring performance was one of the highlights of the festival. Click on the video and check it out!
Lots to choose from tonight swing, funk, jam band & good ol’ rock ‘n roll. See full lineup here:
Get it Together: Moon, Venus, and Jupiter, at Sunset
I wasn’t going to post this because every time I point out something astronomical the dang clouds move in. But I see some blue sky right now. Tonight, just above the setting sun, the waxing crescent moon hangs with Venus (the bright one), and Jupiter. Sunset is 5:26 PM.
Click the photo to go to EarthSky and get the details. The moon will be marching up past those two planets over the next few days so don’t be bummed if one of these 30 mph clouds is blocking it all tonight.
Young Artist of the week!
This week’s young artist is Caroline, shown above with her book from Art Haven’s bookmaking workshop this week. Caroline has taken all kinds of art classes in everything from fractal art to summer playcamp, and she can’t wait to be a part of the Teen Artist Guild when she gets a little older. She told me she really likes to take things from around her house and make them beautiful by repainting and redesigning them!
Also, she made one of the prettiest shields on Lord of the Rings Day (not sure if that’s what you should be looking for in a shield, but I think it’s pretty great…)
If you know of a young artist that should be featured here, email dawn.gadow@gmail.com with a short description and a photo of some of their work!

Seen from outside, with a lighted interior, at the office Mark Nestor (Attorney) on Middle Street in Gloucester.

Just for comparison, below I am including the photo as I originally took it. All the changes between the two photos are from post-processing in the powerful free app called “Gimp”. It’s user interface is a bit different from what most people are used to, but it’s very useful, and you can’t beat the price tag (free!).
