The races start at 9AM and usually last until about 11:30. Stop in at Last Stop Variety for a cup of coffee and a blueberry muffin and head on down to catch some of the excitement. The light is awesome this morning.

Join Cape Ann Animal Aid for Overlooked Pets Adoption day on August 19th from 11am to 7pm. The goal of the day is to call attention to the many dogs and cats that often go overlooked. Most of these animals have what some may call “imperfections” such as medical or physical challenges and others possess less popular qualities like black fur, are older in age, or need additional behavioral training. In celebration of these special animals and in an effort help them find their forever home; Cape Ann Animal Aid is reducing the adoption fee for these Overlooked Pets for the day. Adoptions will be completed on a first come, first serve basis and all regular adoption requirements apply. 10th Annual Nelson’s Ride

The Tenth Annual Nelson’s Ride will be held at Gloucester’s Stage Fort Park on Sunday August 23, 2009 (rain date: Sunday, August 30). Nelson’s Ride is annual slow ride in memory of Nelson Selig, Sr., who was killed in a motorcycle accident on May 2, 2000, leaving behind a wife (Felicia), two children (Nelson Jr. and Kristin), two sisters (Melanie and Jeannine), his mother (Faye Brophy), his step father (Bob Brophy), and many good friends.
The annual fundraiser which began in August 2000, is intended to make one of Nelson Sr.’s dreams come true: to send his children to college. That dream was accomplished and in 2003, Nelson’s widow Felicia requested that our Team begin helping other Essex County families of riders killed in accidents with the funds raised from Nelson’s Ride. Additionally, Nelly’s Bill became law in Massachusetts in 2004 as a result of the hard work of motorcyclists’ lobbying efforts. It mandates that motorcycle awareness programs be included in drivers’ education courses. With the price of just about everything a lobsterman needs to go lobstering going through the roof including fuel, traps and bait, many lobstermen have turned away from costly herring and have been trying alternative bait such as fish racks. We don’t provide fish racks for our lobstermen. They will go and source them at local fish cutting operations such as Pigeon Cove Whole Foods on Parker Street.

So Troy Brown‘s coming to town.(Click here to see theTimes article) AND he’s going to be at some of Gloucester’s watering holes after his appearance this Sunday at The Liquor Locker (287 Main Street) from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. and Seabreeze Liquors (Next to Eastern Ave. Shaw’s) from 2:30-4:00. Troy will be out and about from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Would you like to down a few cold Narragansetts with Troy Brown? Sure you would.
So here’s the deal.
1. Come down to the Block Party Saturday night.
2. Get yourself a Good Morning Gloucester sticker.
3. Print out the Troy’s photo below and stick your GMG sticker somewhere prominent (such as your cleavage, butt, face, wherever).
4. Have someone take your photo with the sticker and Troy’s photo and send the picture to us Be sure to include your name and phone number.
5. If your name is chosen in the drawing at 9 a.m. on Sunday morning, you get to have a Narragansett with da MAN! If we can’t contact you by 9:30 on Sunday morning, we’ll draw another name.
Charlee Bianchini, a correspondent for the Cape Ann Beacon approached me about a month ago to do a story about GMG, my involvement as a part of the team that brings you the Block Parties and my love of Gloucester.
I set up my camera for the interview and videotaped us sitting at The Lone Gull while she asked me questions for the article. The video is uploading now and I’ll post it here once It gets done rendering. Charlee will be heading to China in a couple days to do some teaching. She is in the process of starting her own blog and hopefully she will follow through with it and send us pictures and stories from China.

Just thinking, our Fisherman’s Memorial Service is this Saturday, procession from the Legion at 5pm, followed by the service at the statue from about 5:15 til 6pm. Everyone is welcome, and those who come to the service could just stroll up to Main Street for the Block Party. Maybe you could post a notice here?
And FYI, Josie (Orlando) Russo and Grace (Orlando) Burbridge will be our speakers this year, it will be an extremely emotional and timely service.
