Since the October storm: “Unfortunately, we had the same issues at Newell Stadium (11/6/2021)…Slow, sporadic internet connection which caused us to get knocked off while livecasting the soccer game. I’ve been in contact with the school IT guys and hopefully it will be fixed by Wednesday’s game. But fear not, the game was recorded in camera so it will be available in its entirety on Cape Ann LIVE’s Facebook and YouTube pages! Please share the link and enjoy the game!”– Cape Ann LIVE

How nice to have any film, whether or not the live feed is up. Thanks GHS Fishermen Athletics, IT, DPW, all!

bonus – Pretty fall sunsets

View from stands is no joke! New Balance Field Newell Stadium vanishing point is a fishing boat heading out from Gloucester harbor at sunset

11/18/2020 4:10pm

A fishing boat set out and I bet a GMG reader knows who it was. What a gorgeous setting for home games.

At other times we’ve been treated to great flocks of birds, schooners, cruise ship, and an ever busy back up at the cut.

The games are the real deal. And the site is singular!

GHS Boys Varsity Soccer won vs. Swampscott 11/18/2020. Their last game of the season is Friday.

Portrait of Flip | GHS Fishermen Athletics Department is the best! #GloucesterMA

Flip has earned the respect of high school athletes — teenagers — for many, many years. His demeanor and steady presence are a fixture. Some of his work behind the scenes helps operations like managing the equipment, uniforms and attendance. He knows all the players. If they are late and checking in, passing in the halls, or heading to the gym; — any greeting exchanged with Flip enriches the students’ days immeasurably. I’ve seen a GHS alum in his late twenties– I’m not all together sure he played a sport- cross a room to say, “Hi! Remember me?”, and brighten with Flip’s affirmation and brief encounter. It’s a sure and easy bet that on countless days when things were not going well, Flip has made a student’s day brighter.

The kindest gatekeeper ever, Flip is taking taking and recording temperatures, one of the new Covid-19 safety protocols. GHS Boys Varsity Soccer (a win vs. Swampscott) New Balance Newell Stadium Gloucester, Mass 11/18/2020

Beautiful New Balance Field / Newell Stadium and O’Maley grounds #GloucesterMA public schools

Wish my phone captured the surreal beauty of the fishing boats floating past the field goal, heading to the cut. Prettiest stadium for spectators in Massachusetts.

Picturesque setting and buffer slope designed like natural  amphitheater for the track and field at O’Maley. The track needs work and the field needs filling/leveling of some troubling holes. To left out of field of view: ball fields and booster funded snack bar shed and restrooms (could be open – gross to see teams head to the trees straight from the bus)

Elementary school campuses are lovely, too. Snapshots of a few:

Bleachers are back! Resiting atop restored and improved footing underway at New Balance Newell Stadium

The stands were brought back and moved into place atop the improved footing at New Balance Newell Stadium. Maybe the bleachers will be ready later this week. It’s great to see it coming back together.

The Demolition Of Newell Stadium From The GHS Film Club

Hello All,

Yesterday the Gloucester High School Film Club uploaded a short video documenting the demolition of Newell Stadium from the fall of 2012. It really is worth taking 4 minutes to watch. Check it out here:

 Shaun Goulart

Social Studies Teacher
Gloucester High School

Editor’s Note From Joey:

You know I scheduled this post before watching the video and then went back and viewed it.  I didn’t think about it til the scenes were unfolding but what history those stands held.  As a player or as a spectator.  All those beams and seats supporting the crowds throughout the years being dismantled.  I’m sure it held a ton of great memories for people.   Thanks to the GHS Film club for documenting the demolition.

Renewal of Newell Stadium hits the Finish Line

The Renewal of Newell Stadium hits the finish line, with a helicopter fly-by, rising of the flag, ribbon cutting and a review of all the athletic teams, a day of celebration, and Gloucester has won every game played on the New Balance Field at Newel Stadium. ABSOUTLY PERFECT !!
