Death Row Meal

With the overwhelming popularity of The Death Row Sub Post we roll out the Death Row Meal Post.

Same concept-

For this post to be successful you would leave a comment on it explaining what your choice would be.

If you were on Death Row on Cape Ann.  Going to be executed that night and the executioner gives you an option for one meal from any restaurant in town which meal would it be and from which joint?

Place your answer in the comment section below this post.

To leave a comment look directly below the post for the link that either says “Leave a comment” or “Comments with a number before it” ie: 21 Comments,  letting you know how many comments have already been left on that post

So many great options to choose from but I’m thinking it would have to be The Lobster Risotto at Duckworth’s Bistrot.

Audrey Hepburn Quote Of The Week From Greg Bover

May 4, 2013

“You can tell more about a person by what he says about others than you can by what others say about him.”

Audrey Hepburn (1929-1993)

image

Born in Belgium to an Austrian father and a mother from the royal family of the Netherlands, Hepburn studied to be a ballet dancer before beginning her cinema and stage career. Her films include Gigi, Roman Holiday, Charade and Breakfast at Tiffany’s. She is one of a handful of people to have been awarded a Tony, an Emmy, a Grammy, a Golden Globe, and an Oscar. Famous for her elfin good looks, her collaboration with designer Hubert de Givenchy set the style for women’s high fashion in the 1950’s, and helped to popularize the iconic “little black dress.” In later life she devoted herself to work with UNICEF and was recognized for her commitment with a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1992.

Want to Drive Joey Bat Shit Crazy?

Send him photos of anything that looks like a Rubber Duck.

Mark Destino sent him this one of what looks like a Rubber Duck made out of GMO golden rice perched atop a lovely stew. Joey gets dozens of these a day and it drives him up a wall. Every once in a while he sends one on to me to show me how I have denigrated the original mascot of GMG, Homie the Seagull, with these monstrously annoying Rubber Ducks.

The only other thing that drives him up a wall even faster is if people send him Rubber Ducks. Going to Amazon there are plenty of links for multiple Rubber Ducks which you can then send to the dock:

Meanwhile negotiations for a Gloucester visit of the 56 foot Rubber Duck which is currently in Hong Kong are stalled.  Please contact Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman and plead with him that the Rubber Duck needs to stop in Gloucester, MA.

Europe Bans Bee-Harming Pesticides

Europe took a significant step as a majority of EU member states voted for a partial ban of three bee-killer pesticides. This, despite fierce behind-the-scenes lobbying from insecticide firms Syngenta and Bayer.  “A series of high-profile scientific studies has linked neonicotinoids to huge losses in the number of queens produced and big increases in “disappeared” bees – those that fail to return from foraging trips. Pesticide manufacturers and UK ministers have argued that the science is inconclusive and that a ban would harm food production, but conservationists say harm stemming from dying pollinators is even greater.” (The Guardian, UK).

It  is a landmark vote and was supported by petitions signed by millions of people.  Although it is only a two year ban, the hope is the ban will give the beleaguered bee a break, and allow time for reexamination of data. Under the EU measures, restricions on the following apply: for treating seeds, soil and leaves on flowering crops attractive to bees such as corn, sunflowers and rapeseed (the source of canola oil). The products may still be used on crops like winter wheat for which the danger to bees is deemed to be small. Use by home gardeners will be prohibited.

The three banned insecticides are imidacloprid, thiametoxam, and clothianidin. The neonicotinoid I see commonly listed on pesticides that are readily available to the home gardener is imidacloprid. I urge every home gardener not to use pesticides. I don’t use them, ever, in my own garden, and never in both the private and public gardens that I design and maintain. Several years ago, I reported that Alain Baraton, the head gardener at the Palace of Versailles stopped using pesticides at the palace gardens. Within the year, a natural balance began to take hold in the gardens, including the return of songbirds to the gardens which in turn eat the insects. If the no-pesticide policy is successful at Versailles, which receives millions upon millions of annual visitors, a pestide ban can certainly be implemented for our private homes and public spaces.

A dear friend of mine, Heidi Kost-Gross, is Vice Chair of the Natural Resources Commission for the Town of Wellesley (garden club readers–she is also President of the Federated Garden Club of Massachusetts). Heidi has been instrumental in pesticide reduction throughout Massachusetts. The Wellesley Natural Resources Commission has created an outstanding Pesticide Reduction Resource Guide for Citizens and Municipalities of Massachusetts, which is available for free to distribute anything found in the guide.

Love’s Labour’s Lost is almost ready to hit the stage

Cape Ann Shakespeare Troupe will end its 2012 -13 season with a production of William Shakespeare’s comedy of manners, mores and modes, “Love’s Labour’s Lost”.

I snuck in to their dress rehearsal (well, not really – I was invited) and snapped some photos to share with you:

Back to the press release:

The action takes place in Navarre, where young King Ferdidand calls on his courtiers to join him in a pledge to undertake a strict regimen of study and celibacy. The court nobles, after reluctantly accepting, are sorely tested in their resolve – as is the king – by the arrival of the Princess of France and her ladies-in-waiting.
As each man seeks a way around his vow to forego fleshly desire, and the Princess with her ladies see through the men’s clumsy attempts at wooing, the stage is set for some romantic hijinks. They set out to prove that as the pen may be mightier than the sword, neither is a match for a woman’s sharp tongue. Disguises, false identities and a masked ball complicate the situation, leaving the king and his men scrambling to recover some semblence of dignity and possibly the love of the women they pursue.
Director Ray Jenness, whose deft hand fashioned CAST’s productions of “The Tempest”,”The Taming of the Shrew”, “Measure for Measure”, “I Hate Hamlet”, and “Visiting Lear”, has created “a vaudeville, with the characters taking their turns, all trying to outdo the others. Acknowledged as Shakespeare’s first comedy, it excels at exploiting the foibles and follies of the human condition”.
The cast includes David Alvarado, as Longaville; Beth Bevins, Jacquenetta; John Butterworth, Don Armando; Chuck Francis, Anthony Dull; Ashlee Holm, Princess of France; Elizabeth Jelinek. Moth; Luke Miller, Sir Nathaniel; Carly Moulton, Maria; Ian O’Connor, Costard; Dominic Parry, Berowne; Jim Robinson, Holofernes; Matt Schwabauer, King of Navarre; Jessie Sorrells, Rosalinde; Joseph Stiliano, Boyet; David Sullivan, Dumain; Bianca Tocco, Katherine.
