The annual Rhumb Line Striped Bass Tournament is a family-friendly event and will be held this year on July 27th.
Registration is $20 for adults and $15 for under 16.
Registration includes a free T-shirt and a free cookout in our parking lot at the weigh in.

Big week in Gloucester for Brian Alex
You know that Gloucester’s music scene is going places when we can attract a star like Entrain’s Brian Alex three times in the same week!
Tonight (WED) he’ll be the featured guest on the Cape Ann TV show “Local Music Seen with Allen Estes” airing at 6:30pm. And if you miss it, you can watch the whole show on-line here.
Tomorrow, you can see him live at The Rhumb Line 8:30pm with Dave Sag, John Keegan, John Hyde, Mark Earley and Ephraim Lowell.
Then on Saturday, he’ll be fronting the ENTRAIN benefit for Gloucester’s UU Church Meetinghouse at 8pm (save $7.25 if you get tickets here). It’s a good week to get a taste of Brian’s extraordinary and versatile talent!

VIDEO: Excellent songs up for Oscars tonight — and lots of great music in town too
OK, tonight most of us will be celebrating films, but Oscar night is also a perfect time celebrate great songs — and this is a particularly good year for song nominations.
Our two favorites are “Happy” by Pharrell Williams (the guy with the funny Smokey the Bear hat who won the Record of the Year Grammy with Daft Punk and Nile Rodgers) from the movie Despicable Me 2; and “Ordinary Love” by U2 from the movie Mandella: Long Walk to Freedom. I particularly like Pharrell Williams’ “Happy” video (not from the movie). Check out this dancing!
Among the Best Picture nominees is American Hustle, part of which was filmed down the road in Salem.

Joe Thomas & Memory Layne on Local Music Seen with Allen Estes tonight

Giuseppe’s gets it. They know how to blend food and music into an entertaining evening out for all ages.
Earlier this year they partnered with T Max, editor of The Noise Magazine to feature local singers and songwriters in what became a very popular Singer – Songwriter Shuffle.
Beginning tonight at 6:30pm, Giuseppe’s owners, Joe Thomas and Memory Layne are Allen’s guests on his Cape Ann TV show Local Music Seen with Allen Estes on cable channel 12. The show airs again on Friday at 1pm, and Sunday at 6pm. For all of you FOBs, who don’t live in Gloucester, you can now watch Local Music Seen and other shows on Cape Ann TV’s wicked cool on-line streaming service here.
If you do live here, bop on down to Giuseppe’s after the show and see rising stars Renee & Joe perform live at 7pm. Then you can head over to the Rhumb Line and catch Allen with special guests, The Backwoods Ramblers later in the evening.

Every once in a while you just have to step back, take a breath and marvel at the fact that you can go out on a Monday night and see some of the world’s best musicians jam in an intimate venue right down the street from where you live. Tonight is the 18th Anniversary of The Rhumb Line Monday Night Jam Celebration. The Jam has seen many ups and downs, countless players and attendants and many hosts holding down the fort over the years. Russ Lawton and Ray Paczkowski, two obvious jam masters being in the Trey Anastasio Band, are joining in to help us celebrate. It’s a closed Jam with a schedule of former and current musicians who’ve kept it alive, making for an amazing night of mayhem. Early Start at 8:30pm by Bandit Kings to get it rolling since they’re the current caretakers. Thanks for making my little idea such a big piece of Cape Ann Music.

Here’s a CD of kids music that adults can listen to and love too!
OK, this is not your grandmother’s children’s CD. It’s real! Real music by one of my favorite local artists, Inge Berge. It’s billed as Songs for Young Children to Jump, Dance and Move, but don’t be fooled by the little-kid-friendly title, this record has soul. Not only will it get your kids moving, it also introduces plenty of genres, including rock, disco, country & latin.
In one bluesy rocker, Inge growls these lyrics:

Then in a Latin Baby Snakes, with a hint of bossa nova, his clear deep voice croons:

The promo for the CD says, CD comes in a deluxe cardboard case and a foldout with lyrics and instructions! I’d love to see those instructions. Maybe they show us how to slither. You don’t even have to have little kids to want this CD. But if you do, it’s a no-brainer. Get it here.

Rare chance to see Dennis Brennan (one of Boston’s best rockers) with Dave Sag @ Rhumb Line tonight

The fact that Dennis Brennan isn’t a huge star proves that music business executives are clueless. Dennis was one of the first Boston area artists to make a gimmesound profile when we launched 4 years ago this month (see it here). The first song he uploaded was Sugar Falls (listen here) and when we heard it, the whole office jumped up and danced and all agreed, “He’s gotta be in our very first benefit show!” (still producing benefits)
The next October, we produced our first GiveBack benefit show at TT’s in Cambridge featuring Dennis Brennan and other Boston stars. Here’s what James Buhrendorf had to say about Dennis at that show, “Dennis Brennan was the cool driving force of the night. Fedora, coat, black jeans and boots, slinging an upside down lefty acoustic sluiced through a Fender amp…after 40 years on the Boston/Cambridge music scene, Young Mr. Brennan still tears it up. We’re talking genuine gritty alt-roots rockers, and tear out your heart sweetness and sorrows. … ” (see the full article here).

Lots of early shows tomorrow (SUNDAY) will seem even earlier
OK, you’re setting your clocks ahead before you go to bed tonight, so that means everything that happens tomorrow will seem earlier. That’s because it will be earlier even though our clocks will tell us differently. Honestly, I don’t much like this business of changing time twice a year. And setting clocks ahead seems to be much more difficult than setting them back. It’s not because we supposedly lose an hour of sleep. It’s because it feels funny. In fact, early studies on circadian rhythms showed that when people could control their own light and were not exposed to any time cues, they gravitated toward almost a 25 hour day (sometimes referred to as a “lunar day”) — essentially synchronizing their inner “body clocks” with the tides. (It takes the Earth 24 hours 50 minutes to rotate to the same position relative to the moon.)
Anyhow the point is that if you’re gonna feel weird, you might as well take advantage of the fact that good music starts at 11 AM tomorrow (it’ll feel like 10). Then there’s music starting at 5:00, 5:30, 6:00, 6:30 and 8, when you can catch Marina Evans at Rhumb Line (good for those of you who were bummed because The Grove cancelled her last night). Well maybe all our talk about taking kids out to hear great music didn’t fall on deaf ears (pun intended). Plus there’s another bonus: the fact that some shows start early means you can get to more shows in one evening.

Jon Butcher on The Noise Cover & TV This week – here’s a preview video
I’m guessing nearly every music lover in Gloucester is as thrilled about Jon Butcher’s decision to move here as they are about T-Max’s doing the same a couple of years ago. This week Gloucester celebrates Jon’s choice in two big ways: Jon’s on the cover of the February Noise Magazine, which should hit the streets tomorrow. And he’s also Allen Estes’ guest on Local Music Seen, which you can see tomorrow at 6:30 on Cape Ann TV Channel 12. Here’s one of Jon’s songs from the show. Love his version of the blues!
BTW: You can see Allen tonight at Jalapenos 7pm with Brown, Mattacks & Ginandes (early enough the bring the kids). And if Jon is in the audience, it’s a good bet that Allen will ask him to sit in. Even though this is a blog — and a blog is supposed to be an immediate YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST medium — people have been telling us we should talk more about what’s happening the day after our post because they often read the posts the next day. We get it. Not everybody sits at a computer all day — and even some of you who do have bosses that want you to get some work done, not surf the web all day. So here we go:
IT’S A BIG FRIDAY NIGHT on Cape Ann with music for every taste. If you play your cards right, you can get to at least 2 live shows. Start out with Linda Amero Menage a Trio at the Franklin or Mia Chung, Elisabeth Ann Larson and Soo Bae performing all three of Brahms Piano Trios at Shalin Liu in Rockport. Then finish up with Ned & The Big Babies @ Rhumb Line. Plus there’s plenty more for nearly every other musical taste. See the full lineup here.
