Community Call for HELP with the HarborWalk Gardens and a Photography Workshop Offer You Won’t Want to Miss!!

Okay so I’m in a bit of a bind, perhaps of my own making, but a bind nevertheless. Two years ago there was a formal nationwide public call for art for the HarborWalk. My grand idea was to purchase a projector and audio equipment for outdoor screenings and show films on an inflatable screen at I4-C2, along with creating a film for our community. I was a semi-finalist. I am happy to see the benefits to the community stemming from the success of movie nights and appreciate very much the time and energy that has gone into making this vision a reality.

The dilemma is that the gardens surrounding I4-C2 are not at all looking their best and invasive weed species are beginning to take over, as they have already claimed the adjacent plots of land. I’d like the gardens to shine and to be a place of pride for the City. They could look so, so much better than they do in their current condition. The butterfly gardens are a low-maintenance garden however they do need some maintenance. Having a public native plants garden in our community is a wonderful asset and provides tremendous educational opportunities. My hope is to eventually donate programs but we have to solve the garden’s maintenance crisis first and foremost. We don’t have an outside crew to take care of the gardens this year and the DPW I have learned has far too many other more important responsibilities. The group that was planning to help water realized that they had taken on too much and will not be helping this summer.

As a result, we are having a meeting (not weeding) of “Friends of the HarborWalk”  this Sunday morning, July 27, at 9:00am, under the shade tree in front of the Gloucester House Restaurant, near the Schooner Lannon office. We are going to brainstorm about ways to fund basic needs for the gardens, for example, annually purchasing and applying compost/mulch to cut down on the weeding responsibilities. I am hoping businesses in the area that are benefiting directly or indirectly from movie night will also come and contribute their ideas, suggestions, and manpower.

And here is the deal. For the first ten people that sign up to become contributing members of the Friends of the HarborWalk, either through the comment section or by emailing me at kimsmithdesigns@hotmail.com, I am giving a close-up photography workshop. We’ll hold the workshop in the garden and it will be identical to the one that I give at the Arnold Arboretum.

Bring your own coffee Sunday morning and we will provide the homemade doughnuts!

The Ghost Chair, Believe it or Not

We’ve been doing a little remodeling, adding hardwood floors, 2nd Bathroom etc.

They (Certified Ghost Hunters) say that when you remodel it may awake spirits that are disturbed that your changing their habitat. This seems to be the case with our Rocking Chair. Sometimes when watching TV it will start rocking slowly then increase speed. I did a little experiment. I asked the Chair a few questions. One question always gets a response. The question is “do you like people sitting on you? It always speeds up when asked this. Any GMGer’s have similar experiences? There must be with Gloucester being founded in 1623. Let us know.

This sweet juvenile tabby cat showed up at my door this evening. (Thursday) He is a sweet, vocal tabby with white boots. He seems to be well cared for and lost, not a stray. Could you please share with your readers and help him find his way home?

Hi Joey,

Everyone had such a good time dancing on the wooden floor at the American Legion that we’ll be back there again this Friday, July 25.  The dancing gets underway promptly at 7:30 PM with live music by the Cape Ann House Contra Band.  As always, we hope new dancers will join us.  Everyone is welcome.  No experience is necessary.  All dances are taught.

A donation of $10 is requested of each dancer. Dancers under 16 are free.

Potluck contributions of non-alcoholic drinks as well as finger snack foods are welcome to be brought and shared during the break. Water bottles are recommended to reduce our use of paper cups.

This event is supported in part by a grant from the Gloucester Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

Artistry of the Guitar with Ken Bonfield

The Cultural Center at Rocky Neck, 6 Wonson Street, Gloucester.

Gloucester MA— Gloucester resident, and master guitarist Ken Bonfield will host an Artistry of the Guitar in-the-round concerts at The Cultural Center in Rocky Neck, 6 Wonson St., Gloucester, MA on Saturday July 26th with special guests Cape Ann’s own Raymond Gonzalez and all the way from Australia, Adam Miller.  The concert starts at 7:30pm and tickets are $15 at the door. Doors open at 7pm; there will be light refreshments.  Each show will start with a short solo set from each artist followed by a short intermission and then a second set with all three guitarists in-the-round swapping songs and stories and sitting in on each others compositions.

The Cultural Center at Rocky Neck, the official Welcome Center for Rocky Neck and home of the Art Colony, hosts exhibitions, workshops, meetings, lectures and cultural events of all kinds. Students will work on a series of drawings from an object of their choice and move past the obvious into the realm of symbolism and metaphor by experimenting with expressive mark making, simplification, exaggeration, cropping, composition, scale, value and color.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Lully M. Schwartz is a graduate of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston and Mount Ida College.  She enjoys her 25+ year career as a working artist and teacher.  Her oil paintings and drawings are award winning, nationally exhibited and collected.   Lully is a studied artist adept in art history, all media painting, printmaking and drawing.   The Mill Pond Gallery, Long Island, Sylvia Wald & Po Kim Gallery, New York City, Armory Art Exhibition, Florida, the Cornell Museum of American Art and Culture,  and  Johnson & Johnson headquarters Gallery, New Jersey, are just a few of the galleries that have exhibited Lully’s art. Ekaterna Smirnova was Goetemann Resident Artist at Rocky Neck in 2012, and has painted and exhibited her way around the globe. Gloucester and Rocky Neck are fortunate to have her return to paint in the area this summer. In 2006 she became a member of the Art Students League of NY where she has been developing her style ever since. In the past 5 years, Ekaterina has received numerous awards in juried shows by the Salmagundi Club, Allied Artists of America, the Brooklyn Waterfront Artist Coalition, and other art organizations.
