We had a fun first Nights on the Neck for 2014, in spite of some last minute cancellations by performers. Len Burgess got some wonderful shots of Three Sheets to the Wind at Trefry Park, Ernie Pigeon at Goetemann Gallery (doesn’t it look like Ernie is sitting in front of windows looking out at the water? – Gordon’s paintings are amazing), Bird Mancini performing by the Rocky Neck Accommodations, Pat Conlon and Fran Clark at the Rocky Neck Gallery. Unfortunately missing are shots of T Max at the Cultural Center.

A collection of her essays appears in the book, Pitching My Tent: On Marriage, Motherhood, Friendship and Other Leaps of Faith. Diamant’s first book was The New Jewish Wedding, which she followed the with five more guidebooks to Jewish life and lifecycle events. In 1997, Diamant published her first work of fiction, The Red Tent, whichthe independent booksellers alliance honored as its “Booksense Best Fiction” selection in 2001. Diamant’s novels, Good Harbor, and The Last Days of Dogtown, are both set in Cape Ann.

Day One With The Chiropractor- Elizabeth Bish
So those that know me know I’m not a fan of going to the doctor’s office. It’s not that I don’t respect doctors or know they do good work, it’s just that 95% of the time you go in with a nasty head cold you go out knowing exactly what you knew before you went in- there’s no cure for the common cold.
Further, those of you who know me know that I’m pretty well busted up from years and years of pretty intense physical labor down here at the dock. Last year immobilized and brought to the hospital for excruciating back pain, messed up shoulders, legs, feet, you name it.
Well this last episode of back pain which I’ve been working through with ice and ibuprofen has got my close friends and family begging me to make a doctor’s appointment to try to get me some help. My good buddy Eric Lorden raved about his chiropractor Elizabeth Bish who has an office which faces the DogBar parking lot underneath Café Bishco.
He and Toby Pett nagged and nagged and nagged and I ignored the both of them. Then one day I got an unexpected call from Elizabeth Bish asking me to set up an appointment. Frustrated with my back pain I agreed and we set it up.
Well yesterday morning I went in, filled out the paperwork and went through the standard list of questions you get whenever you’re a new patient at any medical facility.
Then we get down to business. This lady- Elizabeth who is a very attractive lady I’m guessing in her late 40s and weighing about 95lbs soaking wet gets up on me, flips me around a bit tells me to relax and take a deep breath and as soon as I relax lays down a thunder of god suplex which cracks my spine which made a sound so loud I’m thinking the people upstairs at Café Bishco must have thought the the big oak in the parking lot at Dog Bar was gonna come thundering down through the side window.
Next she gently cradles my head in her hands and softly sways it form side to side telling me to relax and take a deep breath, now exhale and then yet again KABLAMMIE, a monster neck twist that managed to get multiple cracks and again on the other side of my neck. Not gonna lie I thought I was gonna shit my pants at that spit second because I thought my neck literally might have snapped off and I’d be paralyzed but after standing up and walking around my entire back and neck which had severe limited movement felt clearly looser and the range of motion was greatly improved.
I went in skeptical, I walked out feeling much better and a believer. Looking forward to the next visit and I’ll be sure to report back to you the results.

Welcome to Telephone Island a magical island off the coast of Gloucester, Ma and it is filled with fascinating animals. This movie was made in the Spring-Summer of 2014 by a student in the Kestrel Foundation’s Lights, Camera, Nature program. The program is led by Jessica Kagle and made in co-operation with Cape Ann TV where the students edited their movies. Screening of this movie and the others made in the spring program will be at the Cape Ann Community Cinema on Main St. in Gloucester, Sat., July 12, 2014 at noon to 2pm along with NOVA’s “The Incredible Journey of the Butterflies”.

Rockport Legion Band 81st consecutive season of summer concerts Starts this Sunday
The Rockport Legion Band will start it’s 81st consecutive season of summer concerts this Sunday, July 13, at the Back Beach Bandstand on Beach St. We’ll have seven concerts this year, ending August 24. Concerts start at 7:00 and will last about 90 minutes. Concerts are free. There is popcorn and tonic available. Kids are welcome. Blankets and lawn chairs are good.

It was a great night of music at the first Habor Loop Concert Series July 10, 2014~ Mamadou and The Jake Pardee Band
Beautiful evening, filled with expressive dancing, happy children, blues and world fusion music. The Jake Pardee band invited a special guest Dierdra Darrha to share her talent. She was very sweet performing a country kind of song. I believe the crowd was pleased. Many thanks to Bradley Royds all the sponsors that make this event possible. “The RV Odyssey is equipped with a video camera in the bow which allows us to observe the behaviors of the animals we study and capture some great footage. We’ve seen many different species during Operation Toxic Gulf 2014, but the focus of our work is the sperm whale–the largest toothed predator on Earth.
In this Odyssey bowcam video the sounds you hear are not mechanical boat sounds, but the clicks of the sperm whale, as explained here by Dr. Peter Madsen. These are the sounds we listen for that allow us to track sperm whales. Also keep in mind the animal you’re seeing, as graceful as it is, is the size of a school bus, so a pod of sperm whales is the animal equivalent of a fleet of school buses swimming around the Odyssey.
We will continue to track and biopsy sperm whales, the apex predators of the Gulf, for the duration of this campaign so that we can better understand the impacts of the Deepwater Horizon disaster.

‘From Ships to Shores’: Doryman left fishing to pursue painting

The son of a Gloucester fisherman, the late Paul Francis Frontiero Sr., began fishing with his father at the age of 12.
He did not know then that this would become his way of life for many years. He never finished Gloucester High School because his father was injured while fishing and he had to leave his studies. As a result, he spent many years laboring in jobs at sea.
Frontiero, born in 1925, even worked as a doryman, an avocation that became extinct; with the innovation of the motorized trawler, the dory fishing industry began to wither in the late 1930s. However, he remained in demand on the port’s fishing vessels because of his skills as an engineer and cook.
