Willie Nile, Meg Griffin and bassman Johnny Pi at Bang A Song Studios in Gloucester
Willie Nile, Meg Griffin and bassman Johnny Pi at Bang A Song Studios in Gloucester

Critical Question Of The Day- If you are talking to someone on the phone, do you hang up if you have to poop?

Maybe this should be a two part CQOTD

If you are speaking to someone on the phone and have to take a poop, do you tell them you’ll call them back and then squeeze one out or do you just let it fly while chatting away on the can?

Second part:

What about peeing?  Does it make a difference?

People have been asking me to use the blog for scientific research and I’m not sure how much more scientific we could get than a GMG poll.

Enjoying Cape Cod

Continuing my vacation… Visiting a friend on Cape Cod!

Lovely beach!

The prettiest house on this beach, in my opinion, is this one:

There’s nothing like the feeling of the waves tickling your toes!

A perfect beach day!

Cape Cod is a lovely place to visit! But I’m still glad I live on “the other cape”…  When I get back to Gloucester I am going to have to do a beach walk and get some nice photos!

Mayor Kirk Forwards A Photo Album of Gloucester’s New Fire Truck (Engine 2) Being Built

Hi Joey,

Here is something you don’t see every day!   This is a photo album of our new fire truck (Engine 2) being built.   Costs $650,000.   We are finally getting to the point where we can finance new apparatus on a rotating basis and over time so as to not have trucks breaking down all at once or having to fund all at once.

Due to the Popularity of The “Who makes the best chocolate chip cookie” Post Yesterday- It’s Competition Time Baby!

Yesterday the question was posed-

Critical Question Of The Day- Who Makes The Best Chocolate Chip Cookies You’ve Ever Eaten? Go.

Posted on August 6, 2013 by

Everyone has their favorites,  some like more chewy, some more crunchy.

Does this call for a chocolate chip cookie competition mug up or does this call for a chocolate chip cookie competition mug up! This could be huge!!!!

For the record I’ll take soft baked over crunchy chocolate chip cookies 100 times out of a 100.  What kind of lunatic prefers hard chocolate chip cookies over soft ones?  Only insane maniacs.  Seriously.  Can’t trust those hard chocolate chip cookie lovers is what I always say.

Matthew Green Photo

Here’s what I’m thinking-
Contestants bake enough for every one to try. We place numbers in front of each tray of cookies. People get a slip of paper or ticket to place a vote and slip it into a solo cup behind each contestant’s tray.
We tally up the votes, drink some coffee, and enjoy each other’s company yet again.
Who’s with me?

Local Deputy Fire Chief Completes International Professional Re-Designation Process

Our Miles Schlichte Is Now A Chief Fire Officer (which in Firefighter terms I think means superhero or something)

image

Deputy Fire Chief Miles Schlichte of the Gloucester, Massachusetts Fire Department has successfully completed the process that continues his professional designation of “Chief Fire Officer” (CFO).  The Commission on Professional Credentialing met on July 2, 2013 to officially confer this re-designation upon Chief Schlichte. Chief Schlichte is one of only 922 CFO’s worldwide.

The Chief Fire Officer Designation program is a voluntary program designed to recognize individuals who demonstrate their excellence in seven measured components including:  Experience, Education, Professional Development, Professional Contributions, Association Membership, Community Involvement, and Technical Competencies. Chief Schlichte received his original designation in July of 2010. To maintain this professional designation, individuals need to show they have continued to develop as a CFO in four areas: Professional Development, Professional Contributions, Active Association Membership and Community Involvement.

A Board of Review consisting of members of the fire and emergency services profession, academia, and municipal agencies review each application and recommends successful candidates for designation to the Commission.

Chief Schlichte has been a member of the Gloucester Massachusetts Fire Department for twenty five years and currently resides in Gloucester.

Video- Fish Teaser- Tough To Watch

Documentary Filmmaker Farhod Family Sheds Light on New England’s Struggling Groundfish Industry

WASHINGTON (Saving Seafood) August 5, 2013 — Brooklyn-based filmmaker Farhod Family has released a teaser for his yet-to-be-titled documentary film, in which he chronicles the hardships faced by fishermen in New England’s groundfish industry.

Mr. Family began working on his self-funded documentary in September of 2012 after the federal government declared the New England groundfish industry to be in a state of economic disaster. Since then, Family has reached out to the National Science Center (NSC), attended New England Fishery Management Council (NEFMC) meetings, and met with the fishermen whose livelihoods are being threatened by cuts to their allowable catch.

Mr. Family’s film will provide an in-depth look at the groundfish industry, from the efforts of New England’s fishermen, young and old, to fish processors, and ice companies, all of whom play an important role in coastal communities and waterfront business throughout Massachusetts. The film will explore ports in Gloucester and New Bedford, as well as the town of Scituate, Massachusetts, a small fishing community that is on the brink of losing its entire fleet.
Mr. Family began his journalism career covering the 2009 presidential elections in Iran. Since returning, his work has appeared in PBS Frontline, The New York Times, Washington Post, Global Post, NHL, NFL among others.  He holds a BA in history and French from the University of Hawaii, and an MS in digital media from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism.

Celebrating Attitude and Humor on the Neck

sue handman opening

Sue Handman, who calls her photo and quote combinations “fabric novellas” is the maker of those fabulously sassy collage textile pieces that mix vintage -inspired fabrics, photographs transferred onto cloth and favorite quotes of hers that would have so delighted Oscar Wilde and Mark Twain. Each statement garment is flattering, easy to wear and certain to be a conversation piece – refreshingly direct and funny.

Until this season, the vintage bohemian clothing and accessory pieces in Sue’s collection could only be found in the festival circuit. Sue Handman is quite a favorite in Massachusetts shows like the Oyster Fest in Wellfleet, Marshfield Art Festival and Marblehead Festival of Arts, as well as many other fairs and festivals along the Eastern US and as far down as Key West. Sue also exhibits in Trade-shows; but she has found a perfect fit in Vintage shows like the Country Living Fair that took place this past June in Rhinebeck, NY and will take place in Atlanta, GA in October. In Florida Sue Handman Fabric Collage pops-up at the Big Bang Bazaar in Maitland and the Fancy Flea in Lakeland and at the famous Antique Market right here in Brimfield, MA.

Come meet the talented fabric collage artist Sue Handman in her gorgeous little gallery in the historic Rocky Neck Art Colony. At Sue Handman Fabric Collage you will also find Beach Rock Jewelry by Kem Designs and selected paintings by Tracey Martin Logan. SIX Black Swallowtail Pupae on One Fennel Plant!

One pupated last night and now their are a total of six chrysalides–five in the green form and one brown form.

To air on public television I need to lengthen slightly my Black Swallowtail film. My deepest thanks and appreciation to Kate Young and Wolf Hill Garden Center, who have been keeping me supplied in Black Swallowtails in every form, from eggs to chrysalides, for several months now! My film is going to be all the better for it and I am just so deeply appreciative of Kate’s and Wolf Hill’s interest and generosity.
