  1. I’ve been told that in the days before engines this is the point in the canal/river where you could stop poling (fudging) and sail.

  2. Back in the old days “fudging” meant poling, as in moving a vessel with a pole. At this point , the current kicked in and the boatman was through fudging. i.e. “dunfudgin.
