The current church was built in 1914, after the original church burned down.

The church was modeled after the Santa Maria Madelena church in Madelena, Pico, Azores, shown above in a mid 1900 circa post card.

  1. I sailed to across the Atlantic in a 38′ wooden boat to the Azores from Gloucester. I sailed by Pico but went into the island of Faial. The very first think I noticed was that there were several churches built on the hill and they all looked familiar, just like Our Lady in Gloucester. The style being similar. It was a revelation to me at the time and I felt a deep connection and understood Our Lady and the Azorian community in Gloucester so much better.

  2. I’m going to Pico, Faial and Sao Miguel in July with a group of my Portugee family members…I’ll be sure to look for that church and snap a few photos..
