Kingsley Flood Heat Up With “The Fire Inside”

By  January 25th, 2013 at 11:28 am

Boston rockers Kingsley Flood have been dubbed “a Rolling Thunder Revue with a punk rock sneer” by their local music press. The six-piece band, who in 2012 were named Americana Artist of the Year at the Boston Music Awards, will release their second album, Battles, produced by Sam Kassirer (Josh Ritter, Langhorne Slim, David Wax Museum), on February 5.

On the sonically heady, Elvis Costello-esque Battlestrack “The Fire Inside,” the Flood examine a relationship that’s slowly falling apart.

“I tend to write from the point of view of people with pretty questionable character — too proud, stubborn, arrogant — and because I’m the one singing, I’m waiting for the day when someone comes up after a show and calls me a jerk,” songwriter/vocalist Naseem Khuri explain. “The guy in this song belittles his girlfriend to control his relationship, and of course he has no clue why it goes south. The extended solos and guitar freakout in the middle of the song were a result of a negotiation with our producer Sam, who conceded ‘you guys are allowed only one ’70s jam on this album and that’s it.’”

A note from Kingsley Flood,

Very excited to kick off this weekend with a song premiere in American Songwriter Magazine. The song – ‘the fire inside’ – is a bit less all-out rowdy than the other tunes we’ve shared lately, rather it’s “sonically heady, Elvis Costello-esque.” And still, we couldn’t resist a total guitar freakout in the middle. We hope you enjoy. with Naseem KhuriBarrett Chris,Nick BalkinTravis RichterGeorge Hall and Jenée E. Morgan.

p.s. Kingsley Flood will be at The Rhumb Line in Gloucester, MA on February 2nd.  A must see!

SCANDAL!

7_03a_sm

Not since Al (I invented the internet) Gore tried to steal the 2000 election has there been such a voting Scandal. I received a call from the Poll Daddy poll watching Lawyers Today. I was informed that there was significant voting irregularity in the “Dump or not Not Dump Paulie Walnuts” Poll. Some Wise ass hacked into my poll and voted multiple times. The Lawyers did not say what question that person voted for multiple times. Therefore Poll Daddy has disqualified this Vote.  Maybe in a few months I will run this poll again but until then your stuck with me.  Thanks to all who voted legally for or against me.

Gloucester Harbor, circa 1900

This 5×7 inch glass negative was part of a panorama, that swept to the right to include Downtown and the Fort. At the time, horse–drawn wagons would transport fishermen to the ships and fish back to market. In my 33 years here, I saw the harbor frozen once. Being a foolish young man, I walked from the Old Yacht Club on Rocky Neck about 1/4 of the way out to Ten Pound Island. I turned around and creeped back. Lesson learned.

Cape Ann Winter Birding

image

Did you know there are more birds on Cape Ann in the winter than there are
in the summer? A great opportunity to see and photograph them is coming up
at the Chamber’s Cape Ann Winter Birding Weekend, February 1-3. It will be
headquartered at the Elks’ on the backshore, itself a good place to see
birds. There’ll be lectures and exhibitions, but there are also Saturday bus
trips with expert guides to all the best vantage points on the Cape to see
birds like the harlequin ducks on the logo. On Sunday morning (weather
permitting) there’ll be a boat trip offshore to see pelagic birds such as
eiders and gannets. Serious birders will get a chance to add to their life
lists, novices will get a chance to see what all the fuss is about, with
knowledgeable help. It’s great for kids too, very inexpensive, and all
wrapped up before the Super Bowl starts, (as if anyone cares anymore.) More
info is available at the Chamber website

FEBRUARY — You’ve Got to Love the 2013 Winter Lecture Series

Those dark cold days of February make some of us want to hibernate. Maritime Gloucester is pleased to provide a good reason to come out of your cave at least once a week.  Thursday nights, to be more specific.

February events focus on our love affair with Cape Ann and Gloucester Harbor. The first two events are:

February 7th: "Sea Monsters of Cape Ann: A Diver Tells All"

presented by Phil Colarusso, Ph.D. Through pictures, video and narrative, Phil describes what is going on beneath of the surface.

February 14th: "A Birthday Party for Stubby the Cat"

A Special Fun Event for Stubby and anyone who has had the pleasure of meeting this independent Harbor Loop cat. Stay tuned for more details.

Watch here or check our website for updates to the full listing of speakers and events.

All lectures are free and open to the public.  Seating is limited and we recommend early arrival.

Fun Friday Night Coming Up Tomorrow – Check out the videos

Even though this is a blog — and a blog is supposed to be an immediate YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST medium — people have been telling us we should talk more about what’s happening the day after our post because they often read the posts the next day.  We get it.  Not everybody sits at a computer all day — and even some of you who do have bosses that want you to get some work done, not surf the web all day.  So here we go:

IT’S A BIG FRIDAY NIGHT on Cape Ann with music for every taste.  If you play your cards right, you can get to at least 2 live shows.  Start out with Linda Amero Menage a Trio at the Franklin  or Mia Chung, Elisabeth Ann Larson and Soo Bae performing all three of Brahms Piano Trios at Shalin Liu in Rockport.  Then finish up with Ned & The Big Babies @ Rhumb Line.  Plus there’s plenty more for nearly every other musical taste.  See the full lineup here.

Here’s a video for all you piano, violin and cello players of Brahms Piano Trio No. 1 where you can follow along with the score:

And here’s one of my favorite clips (if a bit wobbly) of Ned & the Big Babies.  Don’t you just love that groove!  Ned is always right there with you and he’s one of those great bass players who plays bass like he LOVES it, not like he’d rather be playing lead guitar.

Bird ID Please

The woman I may or may not be related to through marriage said this bird was a blue jay which I’m 99% sure is wrong.

Wjo knows what kind of bird these are?
