If These Rodent Repellent Trash Bags Work I’m All In

These are available at Smith Hardware up at Gloucester Crossing and I assume the Rockport location too.  Damn varmint raccoons.  I’ve had my share of run-ins with raccoons.  Hate the little bastards.

When I step back and look at the situation I know I could take the little sons-a-bitches but in real life face to face they scare the shit out of me.  I literally turn into a girly man.  Like even if I’m holding a nine iron and there’s no way the raccoon could get to me before implanting the club squarely in it’s forehead I’m scared to hell of the things.  Can’t explain it, it’s just the way it is.

2 chances this weekend to be offended by somebody other than our boy Joey

Our boy Joey needs a break.

Between non PC humor and MFers dying, it should be clear that we’re heaping way too much stress on him during his vacation.

Really, folks, we all need to find someone else to complain about — and we need someone else’s sarcasm to soar right over our heads while we’re complaining.

Inge Berge to the rescue.  According to The Noise magazine, Inge’s music is “Odd, adventurous and compelling.”

Plus you get the added value that Inge’s sarcastic wit is wrapped in catchy pop tunes you’ll be singing all weekend.  Just don’t sing the lyrics to your mother-in-law.

You’ve got two chances to see Inge this weekend (tomorrow @ Dog Bar and Sunday @ Rhumb Line)  See this weekend’s complete live music schedule here.

The best way to get your fill of sarcasm+bitching-about-sarcasm is to request some of Inge’s most witty and sarcastic songs and then complain about how you’re offended by them.  Here are a few choice examples:

More Inge Berge videos here, including an inside look at the making of Shit Under Your Shoes.

Rubber Duck’s Sistah Goes Skiing

Mount Sunapee Ski Resort just a two hour drive from Gloucester. Leave at 6:30AM and that leaves you with a half hour to buy a ticket, get your boots on and be the first on the lift. This Wednesday it was half price Wednesday (no idea if they do it every Wednesday) so even if you bail like RD’s sistah and hit the bar at noon for a Blue Moon it’s still a deal.rdsisterwent skiingRubber Duck stayed home. Still recovering from the New Year’s plunge.

Quote of the Week by Greg Bover

“Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional.”

Attributed to Haruki Murakami (1949- )

Although often quoted from Murakami’s essay “What I Talk About When I Talk About Running,” this saying is much older and has its roots in Zen Buddhist tradition, which holds that one’s attitude toward the vicissitudes of life is all that any of us really has any chance of controlling. Murakami, who is often compared to Kurt Vonnegut, did not begin writing until his late 20’s, but has won widespread acclaim for his humorous and surrealistic novels including The Wild Sheep Chase and Kafka on the Shore. Infused with diverse musical references, Murakami’s beautifully written work is representative of the cultural tumult in modern Japan, and is just plain-old fun to read. He has been a writer-in-residence at both Princeton and Tufts universities and participates in triathlons and ultra-marathons. His most recent novel is the excellent 1Q84.

Flu Clinic at Addison Gilbert Hospital

A free community flu clinic will be held at Addison Gilbert Hospital, 298 Washington Street, Gloucester, on Tuesday, January 15 from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. in the Cafe inside the Fisher entrance of the hospital.  The clinic will be conducted by the Gloucester Health Department.  There is no fee or pre-registration required.  The clinic is available to those six months of age and older.   Those attending are asked to wear short sleeves.  All are welcome, you do not have to be a resident of Gloucester to attend; all are welcome.

It’s Not Too Late to Vaccinate!

Gloucester, MA- January 2013. The Gloucester Health Department encourages you to get
vaccinated against the flu, as flu season can go on until March or April and it is shaping up to be a bad year for the flu.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) encourages everyone 6 months and older to get
vaccinated against the flu. If you have not already been vaccinated the flu vaccine is now widely available and is still your best protection against the flu.

At the urging of the Mayor and the City Council, the Public Health Department is offering a free walk in flu clinic this afternoon Thursday January 10th from 3pm-6pm at its offices at 3 Pond Road.

In conjunction with Addison Gilbert Hospital we will also offer a flu clinic this Tuesday January 15th from 9am-11am at the hospital cafeteria. The clinic is free and open to anyone over 6 months of age who still needs a shot.

The single best way to prevent seasonal flu is to get vaccinated each year, but good health
habits like covering your cough and washing your hands often can help stop the spread of germs and prevent respiratory illnesses like the flu.

• Stay home when you are sick.

• Cover your mouth and nose.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.

“We are taking the necessary steps to have adequate supply of vaccine available for Gloucester residents, especially our senior citizens and children.”, said Mayor Carolyn Kirk. “There is a lot of flu-like illness in Massachusetts right now, it’s important to remember that in most years, flu season doesn’t peak until February. This means it is an excellent time to get a flu vaccine. We urge everyone to get vaccinated to help stay healthy this season,” said Noreen Burke, Health Director.

For information on where to get a flu shot go to http://www.flu.gov and enter your zip code into the “Flu Vaccine Finder”

For more information, please contact the Gloucester Public Health Department at (978) 281-9771 or visit the city website http://www.gloucester-ma.gov

There’s Still Time!

Gina Fetting Baking At The Open Door

Hello Folks,

As of January 22 I will begin a volunteer program at the OPEN DOOR every Tuesday from 3-6.  We will gather to bake desserts for our Community Meals program.

So,if you have a desire to create wonderful desserts for our guests let me know.  If you don’t have the time to give but would love to contribute ingredients(butter, chocolate, coconut, etc) that would be awesome.

We feed at least 40 people a night and although the food is wonderful we need to make it just a little bit more special. To me there is nothing better then a great dessert.

We will also be making birthday cakes for any clients who come for dinner.

At this point we have two core people that will be there every Tuesday but if you want to join us let me know!

As many of you know Pastry has been my life and I want to share my passion with the Open Door,

I look forward to this new venture.

Be well, Gina

Hi Joey,

I’ve seen the flyer for the Northeast Seafood Coalition/Cape Ann Brewing Co. beer and local seafood dinner on GMG, but wanted to provide more information for readers.

The Northeast Seafood Coalition is a non-profit organization based in Gloucester that represents groundfish fishermen in New England on policy and regulatory matters.  We’re celebrating less popular (but very delicious) fish that’s caught locally and is sustainable.

The Cape Ann Brewing Co. and the Northeast Seafood Coalition are teaming up on January 15 at 6:30pm to host an evening filled with local flavors.  We’re excited to offer a five course meal and each course paired with one of Cape Ann Brewing Co.’s fishermen’s brews.  Plus fisherman and musician Paul “Sasquatch” Cohan will perform!

Now is a very important time to support local fishermen and NSC! The fish will be caught by local fishermen, and generously donated by Cape Ann Seafood Exchange. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Northeast Seafood Coalition, which will help NSC continue in our effort to find creative solutions that work to rebuild fish stocks while preserving family-owned fishing businesses, a diverse groundfish fleet and fishing communities across the Northeast.

Tickets for the 5-course meal are $50.00 and can be purchased by visiting the Cape Ann Brewing Co. or calling the NSC office at (978) 283-9992. We can’t wait to see everyone there!

Have a great vacation!

Thank you,

Nick Brancaleone
