Good Morning Gloucester 
Every day, when I sit down at my computer in the gallery, I check out GMG (of course), and then go to Astronomy Picture: http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/astropix.html. If I like the Astronomy Picture of the Day, I save it as a Desktop picture on my Mac. Many of these images are millions of light years away, and today’s reminds me of journalist Stephen Crane’s thought that you posted. Today’s picture was of a galaxy collision in NGC 6745 that happened hundreds of millions of years ago. It’s awesome, and we’re fortunate to view it, as we are such minor actors in the universe’s theater.

This is one of the best Hubble photos, and it’s called the Extreme Deep Field. The story behind it is that Hubble observers chose the darkest spot of the night sky that equaled 1/25 millionth of the visible sky. The image is a composite created from shots take over a ten year period and only shows one or two actual ‘nearby’ stars, making the rest of the 3,000 celestial bodies visible in the image either galaxies or groups of galaxies beyond our own Milky Way galaxy.
When you think about the numbers, you start feeling really really small… If the universe was a beach, our sun would be smaller than a single grain of sand.
