9/11 My Experience

When I went to the top observation deck, this is what I saw. The Brooklyn Bridge, which is a subject of one of my posts, is on the lower right.

I always get a little choked up on September 11th, since both my father and I were born on Manhattan Island, we lived nearby, and I lost some high school friends in the towers. My cousin Kate, who lives on nearby Staten Island, remarked to me about driving to her restaurant in Mid-Town Manhattan after the attack, that so many young people died that day. Many of them worked on the floor below where I took this photo from, which was the restaurant. May God Bless them all

  1. Thanks for sharing Fred. My friends and I spent the good part of an afternoon in the restaurant/bar at the top of one of the towers. Knowing that many of the people we met that day probably died on 9/11 gets me too……

  2. Fred,
    Wonderful photos. Thanks.

From the time the World Trade Center opened in 1973 until we moved to Ithaca in 1976, I saw the twin towers every morning as I drove to work in lower Manhattan. After that,on clear days, we would look for their iconic silhouettes as we crossed the Tappan Zee Bridge on our many trips to and from the City.

The last time we visited Brian, Karen and the kids last Spring, we saw the new 1 World Trade Center from the deck of PUFFIN in Jamaica Bay. I took a deep breath and wiped my eyes.

  3. That day still gives me shutters and tears, a neighbor in Burlington, a best friend of my daughters, was traveling for business that day and was supposed to be on Flight 11, her parents, neighbors all thought she was on that flight, she was not … thank God, her business changed her flight last minute, she actually was on the run way about to take off, since that day, I feel that I became a better person… God Bless
