Dog watch, in marine or naval terminology, is a watch, a period of work duty or a work shift, between 1600 and 2000 (4pm and 8pm).

But there are two dog watches between 4 and 8, each half as long as a standard watch. In the excellent Patrick O’Brien books one of the characters puns that it’s called the dog watch because it’s curtailed.
