Spreading the word ~ Latin Night events at the Lobster Trap in Essex, Ma

Hi Joanne, just wanted to let you know about our on-going Latin Night events at the Lobster Trap is Essex, presented by Franco Lazo Morales, Woodman’s Director of Entertainment.  You can expect a live music set early around 7 that will lead you into Salsa lessons and a live DJ Latino-style dance party!  Franco is from Mexico City and works as a soloist inviting along special guests, he plays a variety of Latin inspired music with a reggae flare.  Please spread the word, these events are taking place every Thursday in May with prospects of continuing throughout the Summer!

Cape Ann Television Schedules Annual Member’s Meeting

Cape Ann Regional Cable Access Television is holding its Annual Member’s meeting on Tuesday, May 24 from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Sawyer Free Library Friend Room. Annual meeting and election of officers, news about what is new and exciting at Cape Ann Television.

A Special Presentation, “Public Access and Democracy: From the Boob Tube to YouTube, A revolution in Our Time, ” gives members a glimpse at the evolution of public access television, a form of mass media where ordinary people can create content cablecast through their local cable system.

Dory Help And A Chance To Bid On A Dory

The Dory Committee and boat builder Geno Mondello could use your help this Saturday, May 7th at 1 PM to help move the stored race dories in preparation for our dedication next Friday May 13th at 6 PM both at the Gloucester Maritime Heritage Center on Harbor Loop downtown Gloucester.  This move shouldn’t take long if we get some volunteers, so please make an effort to get there on Saturday!

We would also like to remind all of you to make every effort to attend our dedication and congratulate our sponsors, our organization and Geno for all of their dedication and hard work with this boatbuilding project.  It has been many years since a nest of 4 dories has been built in Gloucester .  We hope to have a strong membership showing to offer our appreciation.  The event will consist of a short introduction and the unveiling of the dories followed by some light snacks and conversation with all attendees.

Lastly, we continue to take offers on our last floating old practice boat.  The initial and only offer at this point is $500.00.  Please respond if you would be interested in putting in an offer!

Air Tran’s In Flight Magazine Features Gloucester, Peter Prybot and Your Boy Joey

For those of you who actually read the blog and don’t just look at the pretty pictures, you know last fall I along with Peter Prybot were interviewed about our love for Gloucester, Cape Ann and our industry- the lobster industry for Air Tran’s in flight magazine- Go.  The issue will be in every seat back pocket of every Air Tran flight during the month of May.  Presumably travelers with money in their pockets will read the article and fall in love with our area or at least be tempted by our seafood and unpretentious attitude and come visit.  Hopefully it helps with the local tourist season.

Free Music is Almost Always a Good Thing

This time, in my opinion, it’s a really good thing, if bluegrass/indie/Americana/folk music is your style. Singer-songwriter Daniel Dye is offering a couple of free downloads through his facebook page. Daniel’s music is all original – he comes up to Cape Ann a few times a year with his band, The Miller Road Band to play a mix of Americana music with bluegrass instruments (banjo, mandolin, guitar, harmonica, fiddle and even a cello). These people are all family members of mine, so I’m probably a little biased but if the Avett Brothers are your thing (or the suddenly-they’re-everywhere Mumford and Sons), you will probably want to take advantage of these free downloads. Of course, you have to be on facebook to take the band up on the offer but you can’t truly get something for nothing, I guess. Click here for the download: www.facebook.com/danieldyemusic.

GMG cub reporter on double probation

Boy did I screw up. As cub reporter here at GMG I have a couple of defined tasks. My two big ones are cover the arrival of Rockport Santa and cover seasonal openings. I think I have nailed Santa pretty well the past three years but today I get the email I dread and that is I have failed miserably on the seasonal openings. I can blame it on a new beak or keeping up with Rubber Duck (crap, she has got a hollow leg when it comes to boilermakers) but today I blew it big time.

The Cupboard opened today! The Cupboard Opened Today! They always have a soft opening on the first Thursday of May and I plumb forgot. I am cutting my Friday short so I can order a Fish sandwich with cheese tomorrow delivered onto that well worn and familiar formica then maybe take it down to Cressy beach and eat the lunch that defines the beginning of the season. Or as Churchill once said, the end of the beginning of the season because The Cupboard is open! Get that boat in the water! Go catch a striper!

The Morning After

Turn that damn light off! Can’t a girl get some beauty sleep?

Put the notebook away and do something useful like fill my coffee cup.

OK, Chapter one, paragraph one, it was a dark and stormy night, I would call it weather only a rubber duck could enjoy and I was enjoying the night out but it took over seven hours of watered down Fenway suds before the Red Sox lost then the free drinks started stacking in front of me and I learned how to drink boilermakers out of a straw then a shot rang out as shots are wont to do and everyone hit the floor sounding like a bag of seedless watermelons thrown off a Dorchester Triple Decker since I think we landed up downstairs at Down Under and they hadn’t mopped up yet and the wet splat of large garden fruit was the last thing I remember before I woke up rubber side up in your lobster tank and I never ever want to hear someone cackle “bottoms up” again and no, you cannot see my new tattoo.

Got all of that? Got any leads on Homie? And not any Homie, my Homie. I heard of your idea of tying some fresh herring around my neck and tossing me in the harbor which I think totally sucks. What kind of girl do you take me for? OK, scratch that. Oh, my achin’ beak – any good Cinco de Mayo parties tonight – hair of the Rubber Dog and all – who made this coffee – hit me again –  thanks bro.

New Glasses For Your Nerdy Buddy Joey-The Bet

How much do you think they cost including frames, super-lightweight lenses with scratch roofing and anti-glare?

Over $200 or under $200

OK, OK I can’t take it any more!!!!  I have to spill the beans.  If any of you heard the last podcast you were privy to my absolute meltdown rant about the reaming the Mrs took even after using a $50 for $200 Groupon worth of eyeglasses at a regional eyeglass place which shall go un-named (not in Gloucester).  It was the only time I’d gotten burnt using a Groupon but my ass still hurts from getting bent over at that place.  First of all the worst frames not including the lenses that they offered in the whole place started at $169. the frames the Mrs picked out were $228  Then if you wanted the standard lenses which are heavy and are thick as old school coca-cola bottles they are an additional $220 and if you want the the lightweight and scratch-proofing that is an additional $124.  After hearing all this in the store I was visibly and audibly upset, knowing we were being taken advantage of and I let the guy know it.  We opted to forgo the scratch proofing and lighter lenses and we paid $428 minus the Groupon which cost us $50 for $200 worth of glasses which netted $278 out the door for her middle of the road frames without any special lenses.

So as we left the un-named regional Eyeglass chain after shelling out the dough we got into the car where The Mrs knows I’m steaming mad.  I’m mad at myself for not investigating a little more but never in my wildest dreams did I think there could be that much juice in eyeglasses but apparently I was grossly mistaken.

I was railing on and on about how screwed we just got and how mad I was.  After hearing enough she starts to tell me that I’m just out of touch with prices nowadays and that it had been forever since I bought eyeglasses and that they must have gone up in price.

That’s when we made the bet.  I bet her that I could get glasses at Costco or BJ’s WITH the lighter lenses AND the scratch proofing for $200 or less.  She took the bet saying that there was no way.

Well wouldn’t you know I didn’t get one, but two pairs of goddamn glasses and two boxes (a dozen) contact lenses for $200.98.  One pair has the scratch proofing and the super-light anti-glare lenses for $108.98 and the other at $59.99 I got without the extras as a spare.

So there you go.  I paid for two pairs of prescription eyeglasses and a dozen contact lenses 30% less than she did for one pair without any upgrades. And for those of you wondering, she had a regular single prescription just like mine, no bifocal or progressive lenses.

Do your eyeglass shopping at BJ’s or Costco and save yourself some dough.
