Hey Apple Fans

What are your thoughts on the newly released Macbook Air?

Looks pretty sweet.

I’m wondering if it has enough power to edit videos and photos with ease.

The one I’d want is the 13 inch with a 4gb RAM upgrade. In that configuration it comes in at $1399- a little too steep unless I sell a whole lot of photos.

Go Rangers!

Mass Cultural Council Commonwealth Awards- Please Vote

From John McElhenny-

Gloucester is in the running to win Massachusetts’ highest prize in arts and culture.

Gloucester is one of 16 Massachusetts communities being considered for the Massachusetts Cultural Council’s Commonwealth Awards. The City recently submitted a beautiful video about Gloucester’s seascapes, landscapes and events that inspire many kinds of artists. The video, which was done by Gloucester video artists Gallo Productions and Meg Montagnino-Jarrett, is here.

For Gloucester to win, residents are asked to view Gloucester’s video and vote for it by clicking “Like” before next Tuesday, Oct. 26. The top three vote-getting communities will be the finalists.

Gloucester’s artistic history is as rich as any other community in the state but we’re at a disadvantage because larger cities like Lowell, New Bedford and Somerville have more people to vote for them. So we need votes! Email your friends, your neighbors, your co-workers. If Gloucester wins, our video will be showcased at the Statehouse and Gloucester will be able to tout itself as the Top Arts Community in Massachusetts – a great selling point.

Readers are urged to vote for Gloucester’s video before next Tuesday, Oct. 26!

Here it is

This is a vote I can get behind!

Things To Do- ESSEX CLAMFEST 2010

ESSEX CLAMFEST 2010

image

The Essex Division of the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce will sponsor the twenty-eighth annual Essex ClamFest on Saturday, October 23 (rain date: Sunday, October 24), from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Memorial Park in Essex.

The highlight of the day will be the Clam Chowder Tasting, a competition that pits area restaurants against one another to determine who serves the best chowder on Cape Ann. Several local restaurants are expected to serve up their favorite chowder recipes starting at 12:00 noon and ending at 2:00 p.m.

The chowder will be judged by Legal Seafoods President & CEO Roger Berkowitz, Senator Bruce Tarr, Rep. Ann-Margaret Ferrante, Essex Town Selectman Jeff Jones, Chamber President Kathy Low, Amy Harnois of TD Bank and local personality Ed Collard. The public will also have the opportunity to sample and vote on their favorite chowder.

In addition to the Chowder competition, an interesting variety of activities has been planned, including an arts and crafts area; entertainment throughout the afternoon; the Lions Club food pavilion; an Ipswich Ale station; organization, church, and non-profit tables; a number of rides and games for the children; a health fair, a free flu shot clinic from 11am-3pm, and a raffle for a catered clambake by Woodman’s to benefit the Essex Elementary School. The crafts area and the rides will be open to the public starting at 11:00 a.m.

SHADOW BOOK

Originally uploaded by debclarke art

I deconstructed the entire sketchbook. i have been hindered by the construction of the sketchbook provided by the sketchbook project. it reminds me too much of school exercise book or a journal. it kept calling for words, and i kept trying to make it into something. anyway, this is the condition on october 9. today, i re-packaged the book.

trying to reconstruct the sketchbook. the book is getting lumpy. people with egg allergies can not handle this book…i’m using egg glair. the book had to stand during the drying process, then the sun turned the page into something else.

perhaps this is a Book of Shadow. the idea resonates with my inner life. i just don’t like the way this looks.

it’s a sketchbook. it should not be precious. it should be of use.

onward.

AHOY there! Here’s the weekly quickie on the Sketchbook Project.

The following images have yet to be added to the sketchbook…..and what is currently new & already adhered is drying….hooray for glue. So there are some images missing. I’ll get to them soon….

Recently, my sketches have ranged from the classic portraits…..

…..the to the classically influenced oddity……

…..to the straight up weird.

I don’t really know why I always draw things growing out of my character’s heads (???). I suppose I want to add a visual twist on what would otherwise be just another portrait.

The lower right, the pink lady surrounded by blue, is based on an image I saw on ffffound.com, which is an AMAZING site for visual inspiration, FYI. Originally, she was suppose to be depicted as a woman underwater, but with the way the dress is shaped, she looks like she is part of giant heart. This realization was actually pointed out by Josh. Naturally, I’m delighted by this….however, now I’m afraid that all I draw will start being a combination platter of portraiture and anatomical parts. Frankin-pictures. Perfect for Halloween I suppose? Sweet.

SOMETHING SKETCHY

You Gotta Really Like Fishing

Maybe it’s because for most of the year we work outside on a cold damp smelly dock but for the life of me I can’t understand why anyone goes out of their way to sit in the cold all bundled up to catch tinker mackerel.  There’s about one bazillion things I’d rather do. Much like golf for which I don’t understand the appeal either.  Why someone wants to chase a ball around a golf course when they could be at the beach is beyond me.

Gloucester Landing Proposal

Of course this isn’t my design, it was the proposal that was slated for  I4C2 lot in between the Gloucester House and The Building Center over twenty years ago and was fought by the regular group of people who fight every development in town.

It had underground parking for downtown, it had public space, a beautiful courtyard for the public to enjoy, it had right of ways to insure the fishermen could get to their boats it had a glass atrium so that harbor views would still be seen. It was to be financed with private (read not grant money or taxpayer money) money and would have been paying us millions in taxes by now.

It all made too much sense I suppose.

So on to the the things you should include if you would like to get one of the  $2500 grants

If you would like your proposal to be accepted  and qualify for the grant money here is what you should include-

  • free dockage for fishermen- add one thousand bonus points for free dockage for fishermen
  • any non-profit idea that doesn’t pay taxes –add three bonus point if your plan is a non-profit
  • any non-profit idea that requires taxpayer grants (the higher dollar amount the better)- add two bonus points if your plan requires the public to subsidize it
  • parks -add three bonus points if your plan includes a park
  • under no circumstances should you include anything that might be construed as profitable and able to be financed privately (the idea of someone getting financing on their own and turning profits is highly frowned upon) deduct one thousand bonus points if your plan is to be financed with private dollars and is deemed to be for-profit
  • museums- some new type of of museum or aquarium supported by grant money because we don’t have enough museums that depend on the generosity of donors to keep operating like the Sargent House, The Cape Ann Museum, The Maritime Heritage Center or Ocean Alliance  – add 3 bonus points for another museum or ocean research center
  • green energy- toss a few windmills or solar panels on your plan and you get ten bonus points it doesn’t matter if the solar panels cost $5,000,000 and the return will be ten cents if you can get taxpayer subsidies for those you get an additional ten bonus points
  • schooner center- anything to do with Schooners gets you five bonus points- if you can figure out how to put schooners down there without displacing any fishing boats add ten bonus points

Of course I’m kidding about all this (not really) but if you are interested you should submit your proposal according to the real guidelines which can be found here-

Pat Dalpiaz writes-

Joey–Love the blog!  I check it EVERY day.  We have roots in  Gloucester and try to visit often–just got back from a great Gloucester weekend.  One of the way I use Good Morning Gloucester is to surprise and stun my Gloucester relatives with my “inside” knowledge……thanks to you.  Just wanted to share a little story I thought might interest you.  We live in Central New York State in the Southern Tier.  In this region, there’s a well known “must do” fish fry restaurant called Doug’s Fish Fry based in Cortland NY.  We finally got to go to Doug’s recently.  It’s a no frills/good eats kind of place you would probably appreciate.

I’m attaching the sign on their wall letting customers know how fresh the fish is and where it comes from 5 days a week.  I noticed the spelling problem right away but no one else I show this to notices (and they should!).
Take care and thanks for your efforts to make the blog so enjoyable every single day.  Pat Dalpiaz (descended from one of the Gloucester Ryan families)
