Bigtime Tennis Legend Visits Small-town Manchester by-the-Sea

MAC tennis players and coaches train hard, build confidence, win championships and, on occasion, spend the weekend with a sports legend. Now through Sunday, October 27, junior and adult tennis players will have the chance to take private and group lessons with Nick Bollettieri, arguably the most famous tennis coach in history. MAC Tennis Academy Days will be conducted on Saturday from 2-5pm and Sunday from 9am-12pm for juniors in the prestigious academy program designed specifically by Bollettieri for the MAC, leading to remarkable success for the program and its players.

Bollettieri is the legendary tennis coach linked to 10 number-one world-ranked players including Andre Agassi, Maria Sharapova, Boris Becker, Jim Courier, Martina Hingis, Jelena Jankovic, Marcelo Rios, Monica Seles, and Venus and Serena Williams. One of the sport’s most well-respected and influential tennis experts, Bollettieri will impart his considerable wisdom as he visits with hundreds of players during his weekend visit to Manchester Athletic Club, including
many top juniors on their own tracks to winning national and international tennis acclaim.

In addition, the Boston Lobsters—the professional tennis team which now calls Manchester Athletic Club home—and its corporate sponsors were treated to a private Q&A with the energetic octogenarian whose accomplishments reach far beyond tennis. His impressive career includes flying with the Blue Angels, giving back in Iraq and Afghanistan and authoring several books, including a book dedicated to Billie Jean King and Arthur Ashe due out March 1, 2014.

“This marks Nick’s eleventh year affiliated with Manchester Athletic Club’s MAC Tennis Academy,” said Todd Carpenter, Director of Tennis at Manchester Athletic Club. “Our members are fortunate to have this unique opportunity to get tips and strategy from one of tennis’s most famous and celebrated coaches.”

Manchester Athletic Club is located in Manchester by-the-Sea, MA, and is one of only 24 USTA regional training centers in the country. The full-service health club features 13 tennis courts, the Gymazing! Child Center for preschool-aged children, iXl programs for young teens, a fitness and strength training center staffed with certified professional trainers, indoor aquatics center, multiple group exercise studios, and an outdoor pool with playground.

Rocky Neck Show Features You. Are. Beautiful. Photographs

joe with a brass earring

The Cultural Center at Rocky Neck is presenting a solo exhibition of 30 photographs by Thi Linh Wernau, a Rockport-based artist and photographer. The work is from Wernau’s project “You. Are. Beautiful.,” featuring portraits which celebrate the human spirit and beauty in all people. The show opens on October 24 and runs through November 11.  It will feature four events during the three-week period.

Stop in this weekend, Saturday-Sunday, October 26-27 from 2-4 PM, for the photobooth event. You can have your polaroid portrait taken by the artist, and your voice can become part of the project.  You will receive one polaroid portrait to take home and one image will be added to the polaroid installation in the gallery.

“You. Are. Beautiful.” depicts portraits of everyday people with grit, grace and gravity. A wounded Marine and amputee, a stage-three breast cancer survivor or a skater are all celebrated for their own beauty and spirit. Wernau created this body of work from her travels photographing strangers and a few people she knew. The artist asked all of them to complete the statement, “I am beautiful because…” Moved by the power of a simple phrase, Wernau also included the phrase “you are beautiful” into each person’s set of portraits. Wernau’s primary mission with this project is “to spread love and kindness.”

Don’t miss these other upcoming events:

Someone Wanted to know how many times I quit GMG This year. So far none, which is surprising. So far the medications working. The question reminded me of this video I did with a typical monthly pep talk Joey would give me.

This is a typical sunday morning chat/pep talk I’d  have with joey about every 3 weeks back then.

it may be a little exaggerated . but not by much.

The Holmes Brothers at Shalin Liu TONIGHT – still some seats left

THE HOLMES BROTHERS
Friday, October 25, 8 PM
At Shalin Liu Performance Center
Rockport, MA
978-546-7391

Over the course of their 30-plus year career, The Holmes Brothers– bassist/vocalist Sherman Holmes, guitarist/pianist/vocalist Wendell Holmes, drummer/vocalist, and brother-in-spirit Popsy Dixon–have been feeding the souls of their devoted and ever-growing fan base with a joyous and moving blend of blues, gospel, soul, R&B, rock ‘n’ roll, and country. Their amazing three-part harmony singing, mixing Wendell’s gruff and gravelly vocals with Popsy’s soaring falsetto and Sherman’s rich baritone brings the soul and spirit of gospel music into everything they perform. Equally gripping is the rhythmic foundation laid down by Sherman’s bass playing and Popsy’s drumming, complimenting Wendell’s blues-soaked guitar solos and church-inspired piano playing.

From winning multiple Blues Music Awards to sharing stages and recordings with legends like Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Bruce Springsteen, Patti Smith, Willie Nelson, Lou Reed, Peter Gabriel, Merle Haggard, Keith Richards, Al Green, Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle, and Rosanne Cash, the band easily blends Saturday night’s roadhouse rock with the gospel fervor and harmonies of Sunday morning’s church service. Their most recent album Feed My Soul, produced by longtime friend and collaborator Joan Osborne, is an album of friendship, loyalty, and family.

“Glorious, rootsy R&B, gospel, blues and country. Full
of soul and surprises.”
USA TODAY

“A breathtaking and heartfelt journey through gospel-drenched
soul, blues, funk, and country.”
Chicago Sun-Times

“Timeless, deeply soulful and uplifting gospel-drenched blues,
street corner doo-wop, ballads, R&B, country and funk. “
The New York Times

The Dry Salvages

The Dry Salvages off Rockport had caught yet another victim - the F/V Racketeer. Despite the best efforts of salvage companies and the USCG, the Racketeer was taken off the rocks and claimed by the sea. This was unusual weather, and the captain of the whale watch boat warned passengers not to touch the metal railings because of lightning. A famous poem was written in 1941 by Gloucester's TS Eliot about the Dry Salvages. He's very difficult to read and understand. But here's what his poem means to me: "In life, we'll all run aground sooner or later. Let's do right by our fellow human beings while we can, before the Salvages claim us too."

Search Questions I Get

Joey,

Could you please tell me where I can find the promo you ran about my new book.  I’ve been looking through today’s GMG and I can’t locate it.
Thanks,
Barry Stacks

Go Ahead Click The Google Search Button.  Please.  I know you have it in you.  I just know it can’t be that difficult to grasp that there is thing on the interwebs called Google that actually allows you to find things that may be posted about a certain subject you may be interested in.

If you have a thing against the word “Google” and it sends shivers up your spine perhaps you could try Bing.

Googlephobia- the fear of using a friggin search engine to find something on the internet.

image

I swear to Christ I get 3-5 of these questions a day.  Every day.  It’s maddening.

On top of being able to search anything on the internet there’s also a Good Morning Gloucester Search Engine.  I swear it’s there.  I promise

actual screen Shot of Good Morning Gloucester Home Page below

You can go to the homepage here- www.goodmorninggloucester.com  Bookmark it for easy reference.  The search engine is in the top right corner.

You can use it to search.  I promise you won’t get herpes or anything.  It’s been tested.

Hello Joey!

Did you know that at the last Community Dance our dancers ranged in age from 3 years old to 82?

It is great to have such a fun, multi-generational event with live music and lots of socializing.

We hope to see old faces and new at our next dance, Sunday,October 27.

Hi Everyone!

We have a pretty exciting event happening at Local Colors from 6-8 on November 2nd including light refreshments. Several members got together and created art in the Mexican tradition (updated with a New England flair) for this holiday.  It is believed departed ones come back to visit their loved ones on the 2nd of November. The family often prepares for the visit with their favorite food, drink, flowers, brightly decorated sugar skulls and a special altar with photos and fond memories. We have created a humorous display at the Local Colors Artists’ Cooperative, 121 Main Street in Gloucester to celebrate art and those who have been our inspiration. Feel free to write your own dedication on our public altar. The exhibit is going on now through November 8th with a reception that is open and free to the public on November 2, from 6 to 8 pm.  Please come and join us!

For photos of the display and art work visit our facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/GloucesterArt and http://www.local-colors.org/ You can also read more about Dia de los Muertos and how it differs from Halloween at my blog at http://anisoulmusings.wordpress.com/

We hope to see you there!

Best Always

Black and White Masquerade

Venetian Butterfly Masks ©Kim Smith 2013 copy

Having so much fun making masks and getting ready for a friend’s Black and White Masquerade Party tonight. I just hope the glue holds up!! I made two and can’t decide which one to wear, but daughter Liv needs one for a Halloween party next week so will get them off to her tomorrow. I just noticed–there’s a big blob of glitter in my nail polish–oh well, that’s what happens when you are trying to cram too much in one day!

I think we should have a Gloucester Black and White Masquerade Ball at Cruiseport in the dead of winter–February perhaps–when we all could use a glamarama night out. Everyone invited!

Family Ties Golf Event

Family Ties put on their 2nd Annual Golf Tournament at Ferncroft Country Club.  It was a beautiful day on the course. This event was made possible due to our great sponsors.  A big thank you to Dunkin Donuts, TRU services, Prattys CAV, Citizens Bank, Life Solutions Group, Mass Mutual, and Woburn Toyota.

Family Ties is a non profit created to benefit the local families of Cape Ann that have been affected by cancer.  We use the proceeds of our efforts to aid the families financial and emotionally through the tough times that cancer brings to their lives.

We would also like to thank our special guest Mike Watson; long drive champion who donated his drives on hole #4, a 360 yard par 4 where he reached the green consistently throughout the day.

Thank you to Thom Falzarano for donating his time to take all of the amazing pictures of the event.

The tournament ended with a sudden death card off between last year’s champs and Drew Dominick’s team (Drew Dominick, Nate Levie, JD Aspesi, Dean Babine).  In the end Mike Pratt, Anthony Ellis, Tony Grillo, and Billy Suppa took first place as repeat champions.

Also congratulations to Jason Balzarini for longest drive and Joe Nguyen for closest to the pin honors.

Senior Day for Manchester-Essex Boys Varsity Soccer

At Hyland Field in Manchester the Boys Varsity Soccer team took on the Georgetown Royals in their final game of the season. At the half the Hornets were up 1-0 but the Royals fought back in the second half with 2 goals and took the win with a final score of 2-1
